The history of a city that no longer exists. Yesterday and today

The brewery in Troitsk was founded by the German Johann Leonhard Zucker in 1873, whose birthplace was the city of Lennestadt. After his death in 1891, the production of beer "East Bavaria" (or as it was also called "Siberian Bavaria") and the trading house "A. I. Zukker with Sons ”was headed by his wife Avgustina Iosifovna and managed the affairs until the very last day ... until the coup of 1917. Interestingly, their son Jacob Ernst Leonhard Zucker worked at his plant for many years as an engineer under Soviet rule until the 1930s. Even during the NEP times he opened the office of the Trinity Society of Mutual Credit and made good money on it. What was it like living under the Soviets for a descendant of the richest industrialist is unknown? And it is absolutely impossible to understand.

And yet, realizing that the old days are unlikely to return, he emigrated abroad to Europe, presumably to Germany? Moreover, as I understand it, it was successful and on time - otherwise it is understandable how his life could have ended in 1937! As eyewitnesses describe, “East Bavaria” beer was poured into branded bottles, which were ordered at ceramic (faience) and glass factories in Germany, and labels for some bottles were also made in Europe. Each bottle had a family mark (a kind of recognizable brand) in the form of the German letter S. Several types of beer were produced - some types of beer were more expensive (for rich people), while others were cheaper (for people of average income). Trading house "A. I. Zukker with Sons ”delivered beer throughout Russia, and to European countries, and even to Central and Central Asia.

Such wonderful products were produced at this plant! There were stores in many cities across the Urals - in Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Orenburg, Zlatoust, Miass and Kustanai. The plant has repeatedly received awards and medals at various exhibitions. As an example, in 1908 the award was received - the Great Gold Medal and the Cross of Honor at the International Exhibition in Rome, Italy. After the coup of 1917, the Zucker family left a brewery, all the shops, a huge library, several houses and dachas to the Bolsheviks, where public organizations, kindergartens and pioneer camps were then located. And all this, as we understand it, of course, is voluntary (?), Because, like there is no doubt about it.

image.png

And what is left of this huge brewery and trading house “A. I. Zukker with his sons ”. The language simply does not dare to say what I think about this ... During the Great Patriotic War, a Moscow plant was located at the brewery, which carried out defense orders, produced products - spare parts for tanks. And then such a page in the history of the plant - a large-scale reconstruction of the plant was carried out, and it began to produce a huge volume of beer and soft drinks. Before the start of the restructuring, the plant took the 3rd place in the city in terms of the amount of funds transferred to the budget.

According to the statistics of that time, the first place was taken by the state district power station (it is still working), and the second by the diesel plant (it is no longer there either). And today. At present, the territory of the plant is abandoned, more than half of the brick buildings have been destroyed, all the metal has been cut out, taken out and scrapped, the property complex is put up for sale. Who needs it now? Somehow they wanted to build a shopping center "Molniya" on this place, but they did not succeed, because what is destroyed and breaks, it turns out, belongs to some kind of ... "cultural heritage". How! This is the history of this brewery.

image.png

And these are the ruins we see today.
Everything is destroyed, the factory no longer exists, no one brews beer.
Such a stunning reality...

image.png

Only beautiful brickwork and remains of architecture are visible.
There are no people willing to restore the brewery.
So everything is destroyed before our eyes

Workers in the shops where work was once in full swing.
People did their job by creatively developing their business.
Remnants of former glory.

Such an interesting and rather broad history of the city in the past, which was based on Russia's trade with the countries of Central, Central and Southeast Asia and the complete destruction of everything that was done by merchants, business people and just citizens during the Soviet era during the Soviet era. A bright page of history that the Bolsheviks did not want to show people so much, and then the officials of the new state of the Soviet Union. Until the coup of 1917, the Trinity Fair occupied the 3rd place in terms of trade in the Russian Empire. The first place was at the Nizhny Novgorod fair, the second at the Irbitskaya (Yekaterinburg province) and the third place at the Troitskaya. But in Troitsk the fair was held the longest (Nizhegorodskaya fair 2 months, Irbitskaya 1 month). The opening of the trade fair took place on the celebration of the Holy Trinity (this day was June 20 yesterday) and the fair lasted until autumn (5 months) - the closing was usually in the last days of October. So many trade people came to the fair that the city at that time grew in number 10-12 times and reached more than 50-60 thousand people. That was a huge figure at that time. And further...

In front of us in old, historical photographs is a beautiful stone building, where today the local history museum of the city of Troitsk is located. It was built in 1903 by the Trinity merchant Osipov. Before the coup of 1917, the merchant had his own slaughterhouse for cattle, a small such factory called the salatopnya. He also had a tannery, well-known outside the city, whose products were bought both in Asia and in Europe. He was also a large wholesaler of grain, flour and bread.

Merchant Osipov was engaged in urban social activities and charity. It was he who in those years organized the "Free Fire Society" in the city, maintained the parish technical school, male and female gymnasiums. In this building, located in the central square, there were many different institutions, as we can see in the photograph. There was also a shop of the famous brand "SINGER", which sold sewing machines, as well as a shop "Fashionable Clothes". But what about - fashionistas and then there were many in the city, ordering clothes and cuts of material for themselves, even from St. Petersburg and Paris.

image.png

As we can see, there was also a pharmacy, a notary, and then a private "Siberian Trade Bank" To this day, there are still forged metal massive doors inside, and even safes, which were tidied up by comrades for the city party committee. The first person to occupy this building after that very revolution was, of course, the party city committee, and then the Komsomol settled here until the very last days of its existence in the 90s.

Now the building is owned by the city museum of local lore, having transferred all its huge funds from the Alexander Nevsky church, located in the Amur region. What is also good is that a literary and musical lounge is constantly working in the museum, the creative intelligentsia of the city gathers, evenings of various themes and concerts are held. The Museum has created a "Local History Club". Guests from neighboring Asian countries often drop in here as well.

The modern look of this historic beautiful building of the merchant Osipov.

Here is what experts wrote about this building, which harmoniously fit into the ensemble of the modern Central Square: “Its corner overlooking the square was cut off and turned into a kind of portal with a pediment and an openwork balcony. In the partitions of the windows there are “Romanesque” type columns. Two floors are separated from each other by dividing rods-runners. In the design of the cornices, there are motives of Old Russian architecture.

Above the cornice there is a parapet in the form of stone pillars with wrought iron gratings twisting between them ”. Vasilievsky Lane became the main shopping street of the post-reform Troitsk because it connected both shopping areas - Upper or Bazarnaya (present Central) and Nizhnyaya, or, as they said in Troitsk, the upper and lower bazaars. The further development of the square, as a trading one, was hampered by the heritage of the times of the fortress - army warehouses.

Hello @antikus369 What an interesting article on the history of that brewery.

I wanted to know whether all the photos in your article are your property?

Also, do you have reference sources for the historical information you include here?

Thanks for sharing.

Good day. And down there I point out that the photographs from history were taken from the city's archives. The rest of the information from my book on the history of the city is the Great Silk Road. Book one. In total, I have written and published seven books about the Great Silk Road. Thank you!

Thanks so much for the explanation.

You are welcome.
I inserted an explanation below to make it clearer.
Thank you!

For some reason this great scribe reminds me of the old Ottoman Empire, as some of their clothing materials and woven stuff are still available today.
Amazing how history changed over time and the great losses that went with time.

Thank you for the share and some of the #history buffs can also have a look at this.

Cheers and !BEER

Thank you!
