In the Heart of Charleston

in Silver Bloggerslast year (edited)

I was in Charleston, South Carolina for a couple of days, where life is still warm and sunny despite the calendar date. Life is genteel there, with the antebellum mansions and cobblestone streets, despite the complex history that was left behind. They don't hide their history, in fact, I walked by their old Slave Market that is being turned into a museum right there in the heart of the city, Chalmers Street. Surrounded by wrought iron fencing, the city has a warm feeling.

Despite it being winter, I am still experiencing the falling of leaves. Most of these are from the red maple tree that is in front of my house. It never wants to completely let go. I understand loss, so there is much forgiveness in it littering my lawn. Have all your leaves dropped yet or are you hanging on too? Or are you one of those lucky souls on the other side of the world experiencing the beauty of spring and beyond? Tell me. Tell me. Tell me do.

It's Wednesday! We are walking! As always, I want to thank @Tattoodjay for hosting the #WednesdayWalk challenge! It is a challenge that allows you to share what you see as you walk through your day. Show me where you walked today, I want to see what you got to see and hear what you have to say. If you want to do the challenge, drop him a link on his #WednesdayWalk post, so he can try to visit yours! Whatever your day looks like, it is worth a walk-through. You can't always have sunshine and rainbows, but, you can always have a #WednesdayWalk!

It was a beautiful day for a stroll among the well-preserved houses that trace the history of Charleston through their architecture. Little touches from their French roots. In many ways, it reminds me of New Orleans, or at least they are always being compared with their unique blend of Southern charm. Both have wonderfully preserved architecture and historical aspects. To wander up and down is a feast for the senses. Food is king here!

20221113_124252a.jpg

I looked up the different styles of architecture, mostly out of curiosity, but also because they have amazing examples of different architectures: Colonial, Georgian, Federal, Classic Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Victorian, and Art Deco. The flowers are still profusely blooming, and the sidewalks are meticulously swept, along with the streets. There is much pride in ownership here and why not? It is such a privilege, in my opinion, to be surrounded by so much beauty, history, and amazing food.

Charleston has been called a museum without walls. There are over 2500 historical buildings in Charleston. I cannot even identify some of the architecture, but, there is no doubt about it being historical. I can walk around here all day. I easily put in 11 miles just walking around, up and down the streets, wandering through the cemeteries, and sampling some of the local hot sauces. Wicked!

20221113_124226 (1) a.jpg

I am always happy to walk along these sidewalks, giving history a slight nod as I walk through. I felt this way always when I lived in Europe. Everything from yesteryear and yet, still functioning and being used in daily life. It is always a pleasure to get out for a walk on Wednesday. Any day, in fact.

I love taking a carriage ride through the city. I have to admit, the $50.00 price tag is shockingly high, but, they will remind you that they give you a great tour through the entire city and they spend over an hour doing it. When you consider they probably pay for boarding the horses somewhere, feeding and paying someone to groom them. it probably is a good deal. But, the other part of me says, holy moly! That is too expensive. I will just walk it. We walked. But, I have taken a carriage ride through the city - and yes, it is fun.

This is the United States Custom House in Charleston. Completed in 1879, it is one of very few historical custom buildings that still operate for the original purpose.

Charleston has wonderful beaches, which I will show in a later post. Its rich history scrolls back to the early 1700s and covers much of its history, good and bad. The food is unique and I am definitely attracted to their baked goods. I have been addicted to its charm since I was 12. I'm still a fan! I want to thank @tattoodjay for hosting the #WednesdayWalk! It is always great fun to get out there and show off your steps.

All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.

It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I have never been to Charleston, South Carolina, but I do like the weather in South Carolina. I think I should have went a bit further south as you can see how nice it is there!

 last year

I lived in South Carolina for a short time, while in school, so I am pretty familiar with it. Going to one beach town is actually not a realistic view of what South Carolina is like. Now that you are further south, you will be able to visit Surfside more often. Who knows? That may be your next destination. At least you have landed somewhere. Now you can continue life.

Being in limbo was certainly not fun I am sure.

The weather is nicer, but, I am not a huge fan of South Carolina and that is after spending a lot of time there. Every other weekend at Myrtle Beach and the area, An easy hop onto 378 and you are there.

Thanks for stopping by!!

What a great walk post, it looks such a charming area, $50 for the carriage does seem a bit steep, similar to NYC prices and not what I would have expected there

 last year

It is such a nice city and often overlooked. I lived close to there for about a year and enjoyed it very much. Sorry, the post was late! It just has been a chore playing catch-up.

I know. I thought so, but, sometimes the price of doing business is more than I want to pay.

I thought they should do one for $25.00 for a more abbreviated tour. Then more could afford it.

!PIZZA

never apologize for being late I do say ifpossible post on a Wednesday

yeah $25 is more affordable but i guess they get enough riders at $50 they keep it at that

 last year

They seem to have a good business, so I would say you are right. :)

Walking through historical areas, it feels like we are living the times of past, doesn’t it?

50$ for the carriage looks too much but as you mentioned that they have some expenses to do with it, it may be a fair one or nearer to fair. Hehe. The places that are tourist attraction mostly have higher prices. This very place because of being historical would be a tourist attraction and so the price. What about the food? Was it high in price or not?

In my city, Karachi, winter is very very short lived. Fall comes for a while but trees do not shed of all the leaves. They remain green.

Happy new month 🤗

 last year

It does feel like the past in places!

I agree that the price seems high. While I sm sure they give you your moneys worth, I think some people miss out on ghe experience because of price. Maybe a shorter tour for a cheaper pri e would be a good solution.

The food ranges from normal to overpriced, with the higher prices more common. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words.

Maybe a shorter tour for a cheaper pri e would be a good solution.

It's a nice idea. More people would be benefited this way.

with the higher prices more common.

I assumed so. Hehe

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words.

My pleasure

What a wonderful walk Denise. It looks so beautiful there. The cute houses, streets and the history just adds to the mix. I can imagine you like to walk there when it’s like a museum without walls.
So much to discover. Soooo looking forward to the beaches 😉😎
Have a wonderful Thursday and thank you for sharing these beautiful captures with us 👋🏻😊

 last year

Oh, you are going that far North? Do tell!!! It was a wonderful walk, but, nothing compared to the museum that Europe is!

I can walk all day there and always see something new. I went back to your posts about Montmartre, one of my favorite parts of Paris. Well, they are all my favorites and I still want to go back there to live. I didn't comment as it was 2 am and I had to get up at six, but, I will go back later today because although it was 7 days, I wanted to vote it before that expired. I am still catching up!!! How bad! Power up today!

 last year

Yep, far north hehehe 🤭 will tell soon. Depends on where we get a rental. Hope we hear if the owners accept us before end of the week. 🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀 than I know location. As so far we don’t have an end goal yet and just start driving just after Christmas 🎄 😉

I know what you mean. Europe is soooo different. So beautiful. Every country has their charms for sure.
I could live in a lot of places and be truly happy… all over the world 😎
Maybe one day you will go to Paris and live there, who knows what life brings.
No worries… Denise. All good. The Montmartre post was only from yesterday.
Take your time, everybody knows we are busy and it can take some time.

Yep, just done my power up and post about it 💪🏻🐝🥳🤩🎉 you know… I became a dolphin 15 November… in 11 months of being here 🤩 soooo happy. Woooohhhhooooo
Happy power up day @dswigle

 last year

Congratulations, you are a dolphin! Enjoy the bump-up!!! I am slower than you, but, I give away a lot of money every week, so it makes growing sloooooow. That is okay. :)

I find that is okay. it makes the little accounts grow faster!!

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you hear from the landlord soon!

 last year

Thank you so much Denise 😊😎😁
I have to grow a lot will I reach your account hp 😉 I think I have established enough to help others too now. And I help my friends as much as possible I can with upvotes and support and motivation.
It’s wonderful when we can help the smaller accounts. The more I grow the more I will help. As we all are… a “we” here.

As you say… all ok 😉 you are such an example here. Thanks for being you!

You are so welcome @dswigle anytime.
Thank you so much. We didn’t hear today. Hope we will tomorrow hear if they chose us as new tenants 🤞🏻🍀
Have a wonderful evening 😎
Bigg huggss 🤗🤗

I haven't been to Charleston since I was a little kid. I don't remember much of it, but your pictures make it look like a really beautiful place. Turns out my wife and I won't be going to Mexico for Spring Break next year, so I am trying to find a place to take her. I have about six different places in mind, but Charleston might have to make the list seven.

 last year

I hope Boston is on your list too! I absolutely adore that city! Charleston ranks up there too. I love historical cities that give me something real. What is in the running for Spring Break? @bozz

Sorry to hear about you Mexico trip, but, I have to agree, it is one of the places I have put on hold for now.

Our big problem with Mexico was the length of the trip. It was going to be basically our whole Spring Break. We prefer our trips to take up like half our Spring Break, that way we have the chance to take a vacation from our vacation (if you know what I mean). Oh, you want the list? Here goes (in no particular order)...
Austin, TX
NYC
Colorado (Denver?)
Blue Ridge Parkway
PCH from San Diego to San Francisco
Portland, OR
We have about four days to work with. Right now I am leaning towards NYC, but I don't really know. I feel like some of the driving ones (like BRP and PCH) we wouldn't want to be constrained by time limits.

The closest I think I have ever gotten to Charleston is either Raleigh or Asheville in North Carolina, both of which are pretty cities. I think I drove through a tip of South Carolina once when I got myself lost in the North Carolina mountains.

Those photos really do portray the city well. What fantastic architecture they have.

 last year

That just made me bust out in laughter, Victor! :) How do you take the most mundane thoughts and make them so funny? Thank you so much for always making the comments fun to read! :)

It is amazing architecture!

Love the shoes Denise!
The architecture gives off a Mews feel to it. Never have gotten there, but Charleston is on my list to do.

 last year

Oh, you are coming back? Good to hear! :) Charleston is a really nice city. I love how they have kept the architecture and history of the city true.

I hope you make it. It is a true gem.

Hi, Ed! @tengolotodo

Hi Denise @dswigle yes I will be be coming back and well you showed us a bakers I need to visit!

 last year

Yes!! You are just visiting, yes? We can't keep you?

What a walk in history! Who wouldn't love to take walks that not only feeds the eyes with beauty but also inspires and advances their knowledge. I'd love to take this kind of walk over and over again as it's like an aid to good journalism. Thought you were gonna share more about the interior of the museum, I love museums as they hold lots of historical things. Hehe.

BTW, happy new month to you. It's Thursday in my parts already and it's the new month so yeah, a happy new month to you, wishing you lots of love in this season of festivity ❣️.

 last year

The museum wasn't open as it is closed for renovations. It will be open soon and hopefully, I'll be able to go back and visit it.

I love cities like this and could walk through them all day long.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving the awesome comment !

That must have been such a beautiful walk! I love seeing this kind of posts especially these days when it's been a while since I've seen the sun up on the sky on this part of the world due to the cold weather

 last year

Oh, I forget how gloomy it can be in the winter over there. We are fortunate to have the sun, despite the cold that winter brings us.

It was a beautiful walk, but, I was much south of Washington, DC to find it. :)

Hi, @gabrielatravels! Always nice to see you!

I was in Charleston, South Carolina for a couple of days, where life is still warm and sunny despite the calendar date.

I checked it, and they currently have 13 °C (55.40 °F). Very good for them. I would be happy even for the half of this. We currently have -1 °C (30.20 °F) in Tiszasüly, Hungary.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

 last year

Well, a cold front moved in yesterday, but, I am home now, so it matters not. It is usually 70 F in February!

It is usually 70 F in February!

Wow. That is 21.11 °C. Charleston is indeed a warm place. Literally. February is usually our coldest month. The temperature is often below -10 °C (14 °F). Sometimes below -20 °C (-4 °F). Rarely even below -30 °C (-22 °F).

 last year

Wow!! You win. I firgot how cold Hungary is in the winter!!

Keep warm!

$50.00 for just an hour would be considered costly, at least 3-4 hours would have been fine.

 last year

I know. I thought so, but, sometimes the price of doing business is more than I want to pay.

I thought they should do one for $25.00 for a more abbreviated tour. Then more could afford it.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words!

You have visited many beautiful historical places. The leaves are really amazing. More than 2500 buildings is really a lot and museum without walls is really nice. You had a great time.

 last year

I have! Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it. I enjoy the city of Charleston.

I enjoyed tgis history walk. I never knew Wednesday walks can comprise of my daily strolls. I always thought it was something more formal. And I enjoyed this walk through history with you. Also learjed something new. Is Team USA a community on hive? I'd like to read many stories if possible...

 last year

You can read the rules to #Wednesdaywalk in its entirety to see .You will find them on the main post or the community page.

Team USA is a community on Hive, but you must be from the USA or live thete. Thanks for stopping by!

what a wonderful place to walk by. but it seems empty why?

 last year

Because I omitted the pictures with people so the focus would be on the buildings. I get up early to avoid it. I have many pictures with lots of people - to be posted at another day.

Thanks for stopping by.

oh ,that would be a great idea, we may not know how buy that place was in rush hours

 last year

If I let all the people in the picture, there would be no place to see, it would be too crowded. :)

As a complete photography lover, I fell in love with photography. Thank you.

I have always loved houses with doors made of wooden material. I think this shows the fine beauty in the souls of the hosts there.

 last year

I think that most doors from that era are wood. But, I could be wrong.

a museum without walls - so nice words...😍
and Charleston is a dance which me and my son learn now because it's a basic element of Shuffle dance;) So it's a popular word in our speech now;)
now I see it's a very nice city to visit💚

Charleston is a city where any walk is a pleasure, I say that even though I've never been there, I've seen pictures and descriptions from you. These towns with history and old architecture are, as you say, outdoor museums. It is true, in Europe they are different, it is like a difference between original and copy..., but not to say copy. I will use a term from music, "cover". I've listened to many covers more beautiful than the originals! It can also happen in architecture, urbanism, lifestyle, etc.

A pleasant walk and great food, of course, and a relaxing coffee, maybe some interesting conversations. Ingredients for a pleasant life. I'd like that too...

Thank you, @dswigle, for this walk! I hope you do as many of these as possible.

Wow - the customs house is so pretty !!!
