Spending three days traveling to and from your place of work and home is not a pleasant prospect, with hours waiting at airports or being stuck in impersonal hotel rooms in strange cities during stopovers as one needs a Visa to walk around some of the cities!
This is what my brother is doing again now that travel restrictions have been lifted. He was able to work from the comfort of his home in South Africa, and have online meetings with his colleagues in Khazakstan, so of course, was not looking forward to going back to that routine!
They had just moved into their new home when flights to his destination were possible and he was not charmed but was needed back at the office!
On his return trip, we drove up to celebrate three birthdays; my sister-in-law, mine, and my baby brother's.
He was only back home for two weeks, when they called him back, so he was not a happy chappy, and is now looking at accepting a job offer closer to home - only an 8 hour flight away, not too far to travel to work or not:)
It's always quite unreal that the winter temperature is about 9 degrees lower in the beautiful, tree-lined suburb of Hillcrest, a mere 30 minutes drive from us. we love taking a drive up that way, as it has a kind of countryside feel to it. When the mist settles in here, it feels like an icy blanket is enshrouding one, so we always make tracks for home before the mist comes in.
They live on an estate that has fabulous views, and even though it's about 30 kilometers from the coast, one can see the ocean and even the ships in Durban harbour on a clear day! On this occasion, we could still see the ocean on the horizon, even though it was a bit cloudy.
Small buck find their way into the gardens, as there is a large open space for grazing and trees that provide shelter on the edge of the estate.
Spekboom
The only problem with the buck is that they love eating the succulent, sourish leaves of an amazing indigenous plant, commonly known as Spekboom.
This plant is invaluable in that it helps fight climate change and air pollution, and I will quote just one really interesting fact about how an insignificant plant can be such a powerful natural anti-pollutant:
...helps to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by acting like a carbon sponge, improving the quality of air we breathe.
It can absorb between four to ten tonnes of carbon per hectare.
This incredible tree uses carbon to make plant tissue and produce oxygen.
According to The Spekboom Foundation, its “capacity to offset harmful carbon emissions is compared to that of moist, subtropical forests. it's unique in that it stores solar energy to perform photosynthesis at night. This makes a spekboom thicket 10 times more effective per hectare at carbon fixing than any tropical rainforest.”
My brother installed a low wire fence to stop the buck from eating their spekboom, which is planted all along the fence of the front lawn and has mostly been eaten. It also is a nice addition to salads and has health benefits, so pop over to the link.
The previous owner planted mainly indigenous plants. This Aloe Vera also has amazing healing properties.
Bromeliads and a couple of succulents are all plants that do not need much nurturing.
The Ice Plant or Vygie as it is commonly known is a hardy drought-resistant indigenous plant and comes in various colours.

It needs to a very good job to make anyone do that. Probably your brother have his reasons to do this. I am very curious about it, to be honest, because most people would not do this.
I travel only approximately two hours to my workplace by buses. And as I know, most people are not traveling more than a few hours to their workplaces.

Travel to/from work is most probably most tiresome part of getting the job done, of late anyone moving through our area must add an hour or two extra to get to Durban.
Cannot imagine having to fly spending hours away from home after becoming used to working from home.
Spekboom, I must have about ten scattered around the garden, nice to pick a leaf and nibble on, so easy to grow it is a must for every garden here.
Another lovely visit up into Hillcrest, feel very sorry about your brother having to travel once again!
