Some time out!

Today I will discuss the importance of taking a break, or as some call it, time out!

After two burn outs, the last one ending up in a serious operation, I started to take heed of the fact that I was busy killing myself with constant work. No breaks at Papillon even on public holidays and weekends for the first 5 years took it's toll in the first burn out. Then after we recovered it was back to the grindstone until I faced death, as a main artery to my brain was suddenly blocked and a stroke would have done me in.

Btw. That's not me in the first photo, just a man taking a break with his friend.

They mention 6 reasons why we have to take breaks.
Here they are.

  1. You'll Reset Yourself Mentally
    262.JPG

  2. You'll Feel Way More Productive When You Return
    213.JPG

  3. You'll Gain A Better Work/Life Balance
    398.JPG

  4. You'll Realize You Need To Stop Taking Work Home
    422.JPG

  5. You'll Rekindle Your Relationships
    512.JPG

  6. You'll Reset Your Focus
    18121706_1011320529003397_6626748473077282312_o.jpg

That's me in the picture above and I have changed my focus to become a child again 🤣 🤣 🤣

To start, you need to change your thinking. What’s the first thing that pops into your head when you think ‘vacation’? Chances are, it invokes thoughts of travel and a hotel stay, and perhaps a specific destination. The thing is, at its core, taking a vacation is simply taking time off away from and disconnected from work. It requires nothing more than turning off your phone and laptop and not doing any work.

Six reasons to take a break Source

I did not want to explain the importance of taking breaks in my own words, simply because I am not an authorized medical expert in it, but I trust that you will take this post to heart.
Stress created by constant business and worries is a killer and we all have to be aware of the dangers.
Heed the times and the dangers.

And That's All Friends!

A timely post, thank you. I've been on the cusp of taking a break, just a few miles down the road, but a change of scenery nonetheless, and am closer to actually setting dates. We all need a breather from day-to-day stresses and pressures and it's important we listen to our bodies and minds when they tell us a break is due. Ignore the signals, and they can become very much clearer in the form of a health problem.

 3 years ago (edited)

That is one of the secrets to stay healthy my friend.
Even if you just take a long walk and sit on a bench somewhere in nature, it counts as a break.
Many people think that to take a break is to book a long holiday of two weeks or more, and that's not a bad thing, but even a one or two hour break can work their magic to beat stress.

Rather this than ending up in a hospital.

Blessings.

We all need to keep the child in ourself to be able to enjoy ... and I love swings 😁

It's so true what you say, Zac, and the longer you postpone a time out or just a longer break than only a weekend from work or from whatever, the harder the Reset will be, the harder it will be to get away and forget.

Good morning Hannes,

Hahaha, I just wanted to end a hefty subject with some humor my friend.
Taking breaks should be common sense, but some like me think that breaks interfere with our flow.
We are important you know and the world can't turn properly without our help 🤣

Stress is a stelthy bugger and by the time that we realize it, then it's too late and we suffer the consequences.
Luckily mountain goats cannot get stress, so you are safe 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Good morning Zac,

I think I have been living too long amongst humans, because stress has become quite a real thing to me 🤣

I took a short break this morning and after a while I stopped thinking of work and could enjoy the calm Spring morning at the reservoir. I sat down, had a coffee and enjoyed ... nobody was on my side, because it's an overgrown area, but on the other side it has been busy with running, biking and walking people.

In the afternoon I want to go for a ride, but there are already some rain clouds on the sky, so I'll see after lunch what I'll do.

Hopefully you're having a nice day too, my friend, enjoy your weekend 🤗🌞

Hi Hannes, I am back and this beautiful picture of yours has the same deep blue that we saw in my pictures today. The dam was also a deep blue.
But my photos were taken late afternoon and I used one as the fist photo in my post a little while ago.

Do not worry too much about the rain, as it is neccessary to bring you nice new Spring colors.
At least you had a ride which was great.

Cheers and thanks.

Hi Zac,

I have just seen that you have had a nice Sunday 🌞

It's warm outside and everything is turning green, just as you said. Spring is here and new life is growing 😄

I'm young so I get caught up in the flow of life. But someday I will take time to rest myself

 3 years ago (edited)

Just be careful, as what you do in your young days, you will pay for when you get old.
Most usually hospital bills.

Thank you for sharing

I think today your post is the forth one I have read with very similar themes. It seems reflection is in the moment. Are more and more people beginning to realize that they need some tranquility in their lives, some place they can cool down, a place to sit in the shade and just let life be for a few moments? To freeze one moment and all moments and no moments, a place to just let life happen.

Thank you and maybe you see the message so many times because it has become a popular topic methinks.
It is indeed a very important message due to it's neccesity during these times that are loaded with Covid stresses and the battle to survive economically for so many.
So yes, regular breaks are essential.

This is soo True ☺️ a time out.
I have been close to a burnout myself, lots of stress at work, understaffed and much overtime.
That is what most of us regonize, and it is soo easy to just let the wheel spinn... And its sometimes Hard to break that bad circle ourselves. I got to a point where I forgot myself.. Didn't take the walks I love and taking picture, instead I worked so much that all I did was work and sleep and had no life. Had nothing to recharge
myself with.
But then finally I had enogh and said no to working over, and started to take a walk every Day after work no matter how tired I was.
THAT saved me and made me realize what I missed and needed ☺️

Your reasons up there is soo spot on my friend.
Thank you for sharing this and reminding us to take care of ourselves 🙏❤️

Oh yes, like hamsters inside a wheel we simply just keep on running until some of us fall over.
Work and sleep is no life and we were not created to do that, so that's why the hospitals are full with cases that could have been prevented.
Stress is a dangerous driver and the sooner we realize that, the better.

You were wise to take that walk, as it changed your priorities and your life.
Had you not taken it, you might have been much worse off today. A real life saver methinks.

My pleasure to share and I hope that someone can benefit from it.

Wonderfully inspirational story @papilloncharity, you Silvers are on the ball tonight! Taking short breaks REALLY is vital, I tend to get close to burnout as I push myself too hard, but have

learned to heed the times and the dangers...

To slow down and take time to really enjoy the things that make us happy as even retirees can suffer burnout if we take on too much.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us here on Hive Silver Bloggers!

Shared the experience to hopefully warn others Lady Lizzy.
We are compassionately charged, which is much needed for the work that we do at the charity and so we allways go those extra lengths. Until it costed us, as Marian also had burn out.

Fortunately she is younger and recuperated better, but yes, we work at a leisurely pace now.
There are still some days that we push hard, but afterwards we immediately take a trip into nature.

Blessings and stay well.

unwinding is what I do too, to break away from the stress I feel from work, it really helps, and your photographs of nature are amazing!

Great that you understand the essentiality of taking breaks to relieve stress my friend.
Some of us, like me, push ourselves beyond the limits, but I have learned a very expensive lesson.
So, yes onwards we go now at a more leisurely pace.

Stay well.

I couldn't agree more. The stress in our life is taking its tall without delay.
Right now I have my break and I have switched off. It is five days only, but it will help me recharge my baterries.

 3 years ago (edited)

Glad that you realize the dangers and that you are taking breaks my friend,
None of us are irreplacable and we are supposed to enjoy our lives.
So well done to you.

Like I always say, taking time out/resting is part of working hard. We tend to leave it out when were talking about working hard, but it is part and parcel of working hard and achieving your goals. Nothing makes up for not having rest and time out, rest fuels us to do what we have to do even better.

Oh yes, rest forms and integral part of top performances and skipping it in our constant chase after the wind causes much damage to the body. This damage accumulates over time until an armageddon moment arrives and the body simply shuts down.
A big danger.

Great advice my friend, something I did struggle with but am perhpas taking too many breaks these days LOL

Hahaha, you have it right as you are almost on a permanent holiday lately JJ.
Not much of a holiday, as you have to take care of Lulu, but time off in any case.
But look at it on the bright side, it is good for you my friend.

Hope that your Sunday is good and our regards to Lulu.

I do try and look at the bright side, for the most part, trying to get walking a bit more, I was doing well over 10K most days but the past few months my step count has gone way down trying to build back up again

Happy Sunday My Friend

Very sage advice! I find I'm SO much more productive after doing a reset like you describe. Sometimes a break just makes you realize you've been allocating your time to the wrong things.

Thank you and I am glad that you also understand the value in taking breaks.
Especially the ones where one can do some introspection that results in a re-alignment of one's priorities.
A reset as you call it is absolutely neccessary from time to time.

Hi @pappilloncharity, I think getting too involved in work is a common trap enthusiastic passionate individuals fall into. I know I did and when I finished work permanently I found out that I had chronic stress in my body even when I thought I was dealing with stress related work issues. It was a surprise for me. Just goes to show how easy it is to develop stress physically, emotionally and mentally. Retirement has been a healing time for me.
ps: I loved the chubby bulldog in the first photo and was going to compliment on your choice of dogs until I read further. Hahaha

Oh! I thought that you were going to compliment me on my swinging abilities Lady @angiemitchell 🤣

Yes indeed, if only all of us can understand the dangers of stress, as it is a negative accumulation in the body that never has a happy ending.
It wrecks the mind that then sends erroneous messages to the body that confuses the central nervous system. This is how it was explained to me by a specialist.
Yes, you are right, as chronic stress is also a part of this and I am glad that you are now healing during your retirement period. Perpetual never ending stress is a great battle in life.

Blessings and thank you!

Good morning @papilloncharity, hope this finds you well.
All of the suggestions made for taking a break from work are spot on. During my working years, I always felt like everyday was a double shift. Home with the children by day, working in the hospital at night. But I was young and did what was necessary to properly raise my family as well as contribute to the kitty.

Looking back now at my age I think, how did I do it all? Answer #1, I had a great partner. #2, thanks to my mom, we were able to get away now and then by ourselves, she loved baby sitting and would always encourage us to check out once in a while.

Now our sentiment is, if you stop enjoying what you are doing, drop it, just take a brake.
I think this new project of @lizelle #Hive Silver Bloggers is going to be a success.
Just think of all the stuff us "mature" people know.😄

Have a wonderful day, don't forget to take a break now and again.

Hahaha, thank you madame and I have become a loud hailer for taking breaks, as my demented drive almost killed me. We rush here and there and everywhere for what ?
Bosses keep on tip toeing around us all of the time pushing us to do more and they cast little gifts called bonusses our way all for their own profit improvement. That's why me and bosses have parted ways a very long time ago.
So, nowadays I encourage people to take regular breaks.

You have certainly done well and you had great support and thankfully your mom understood the value in taking breaks. Also totally correct that one has to enjoy whatever it is that one is doing.
But how many are forced to do jobs that they hate for the sake of survival?
It is certainly a waste if one's heart is not in what one is doing.

Blessings and !LUV

I must say I was fortunate, I was a radiographer (medical imaging) and I truly enjoyed my work. The shift always flew by and I really felt fulfilled when I could help people get well. My patients were never the problem, it always came down to the "boss" and the organization, now that was where the stress came from.
You know what I mean @papilloncharity.😏

Wow, that job suited you well, as you have the right heart for it.
I know exactly what you mean and that was the main reason why I decided to do my own thing.
The last boss earned a fantastic salary and all of the benefits and I had to slave on a pittance, having him on my back daily. So that was the catalyst and I decided no more.

Looking back, I don't regret it for a moment and instead it was the best decision that I ever took to slam my immediate resignation on his deck. It was a specialized industry and all of a sudden he sat without a factory manager. Of course he made some overtures, but I told him that he should have made them while I was working there.

Life does not wait for us my friend, we must go out and get it.
People like you make me feel happy and thank you.

Blessings and !LUV

Hello @papilloncharity Yes, I understand you fully. A person doesn't realize how stress creeps upon you and hits your hard when you're not looking. So happy you're finally able to take a break.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you my friend and doctor's orders to take it easier.
Stress is a real killer and sooner or later something has to give in. Most often it is a sudden illness that is normally life threatening, but that's the only way that hard headed and driven people like me will learn.
All of our work still continues, but now at a much more leisurely pace.

The recovery is slow, but we will get there I think.

Blessings!
!BEER

Good to hear. I take a combination of 3 HPB meds daily. My knock upside the head came about twenty five years ago. Still taking meds today. I can only control it at this point. The wonderful thing is, like you say, it forces you to take it slow, one day at a time and not rush any more.

Life will still be there when you get around to it if you're mindful of that.

Take care.

 3 years ago (edited)

Ha. Don't even mention pills as I hate the stuff.
Stomach pill first thing in the morning, then the blood pressure pill after breakfast and a little later the Cortizone and Anti-Histamine pills. Then later the Iron and VItamine C pills. Early evening the Aspirin pill and finally the heart pill before bed. EVERY DAY!!!

So if one complains to a doctor, they simply give one another pill to counter the effects of an existing pill.

My mom used to say that a good doctor is one that doesn't give a person a pill.
They are as rare as a camel on the moon.

Did I tell you that I hate pills 🤣

Hope that your Friday is good my friend.

Cheers and !BEER

That sounds like my daily regimen, except add water pill so I run to the ladies room every 30 minutes, lol. All in the name of keeping you alive!

I learned early on that the only way to help people is to make sure you help yourself first. If I don't, I will eventually run dry. So easy to do. As far as even here at Hive, I break now and then. I used to think that I would lose people with my absence, but, if I do, then did I really have them?

Stress is a killer for sure.

Love sent your way. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you kindly for the thoughts and prayers, as it is gold to me Lady Denise.
Yes, we went out there with stars in our eyes and most days we worked 24/7.
Lived in a tiny projector room for the first 7 years and winter was hell without hot water, so eventually something had to give.

I have still not fully recovered, but now I try to take things easier while the work still continues.
Let's just say that I have learned how to delegate hahaha.

Thank you for your care milady.
!LUV

Hi @papilloncharity! I`m here to help :) If you want to delegate, please make a comment (for example replay to this one) like this:
I want to delegate X sp to @user
Where X is the amount of SP and @user is the steem user you want to delegate to. For example:
I want to delegate 100 sp to @dswigle
@tipU will answer with a delegation link. Hope this helps!:)

Thanks, @tipu!

@dswigle is always appreciative! ❤️ :)

Thank you for the kind help. I rather want to tip than to delegate.
So, will it work if I do this example; I want to tip X SP to @user?

:) You learned to delegate? Only a little. I hope you do get out and take it easier. Life is so short and it's just wouldn't be the same without you. ❤️

We have a new way now Lady Denise and it helps a lot.
Instead of running up and down all over the place and trying to do everything by myself, what was the answer? Simple, so simple that it almost escaped me.

We now partner with 6 other non-profits. One is our existing Trauma Training for Child Handlers project and the other 5 are organizations that are involved in the work that we do.
So, they all have staff that do the running around and we support with advice and finances.

Currently we can only give each of them R 2,000 per month, but as our situation improves they will get more. This has always been the answer and we are engaging with more non-profits, as we can get so much more done.

The idea that I presented to our board is that Papillon will become an umbrella organization and the fear that we want to access the funders of our member organizations are removed which was always a big problem. Instead we also support them financially, but we concentrate more on supporting their staff members.

So, it's a new way and it is working sweetly at the moment.
Competition is always a good thing and we hope that other organizations will also start to do this, as partnerships will improve the lot of the poor people.

Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I just wanted to update you.

Have a happy Friday my dear friend.

Cheers and !LUV

No! Thank you so much! I am so very happy to hear this. I am also glad for the partnering up, it is what I did, for the sole benefit of the people. It helped keep the place afloat and I think everyone benefited from it.

This is a golden moment for you, honestly. It will slow you down a little I hope and take care of you for your future. Love and hugs there, @papilloncharity Things have finally found their way to you.

More things are coming my way after today's wonderful meeting Lady Denise.
I was invited to a meeting by the CEO of a big community trust, as he was not sure if a person that approached them for funding was genuine. So, he arranged the meeting for us with the applicant.

The guy knew that I was invited to the meeting and he never pitched up. Not even a message that he couldn't make it, so the CEO shredded his application.

But something unexpected happened, as somehow my dream about owning a farm to rehabilitate first time youth offenders entered our small talk and the CEO was blown away, as he has the very same dream. Then guess what happened?

A lady entered the coffee shop where we were meeting and he greeted her and introduced us. Turns out that she is very wealthy and she owns four farms. For some reason she joined our conversation and became excited as she said that she could give us many hectares on one of her farms that were laying idle. She had planned to plant them with new grape vines, as they were stripped of the old vines, but our cause was so much more important.

Then another lady entered the fray and she wants to build what they call "Earth Ships" meaning that they are buildings that are built off grid with natural materials to protect the environment.

So now it seems that I can get a place and I can get a hostel and a college built off grid to kick the project into action. All for free and I am in 7th heaven.

I know a senior judge and Papillon partnered with the Lawyers for Human Rights for many years, so I can handle the legal side of sending young small time offenders to the farm instead of to prison.
I have no hope of achieving 100% success with all of the offenders, but if we can help 7 out of 10 to change then it can become a big win.

As always we will start small, but if we do it right, I feel it will grow overnight like Papillon did 20 years ago.
Here is to hope!

Blessings.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

You never cease to amaze me and how people reach out to you, unprovoked. It is you very nature and genuineness, seeking nothing for yourself and nothing from anyone. It always rings through and you are exactly the kind of person that I would have loved to work with.

It never ceases to amaze me how God works throught you.

The story just got better and better. I couldn't not be any happier for you and Marion and it couldn't have happened to a nicer person. Sending my love your way! ❤️
