What are Mermaid's purses?

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago (edited)

Can you believe that this is an egg purse of a Dark shyshark (Haploblepharus pictus)?
019.jpg

Oh yes, I had never heard of Mermaid's purses before, but we learn every day. So imagine my delight when we found out what it was.

My wife collects stuff on the beaches and we thought that these soft wonders from the ocean were something special. So I will show you her collection in here of shark, skates and rays egg purses.
Amazing what our strolls on the beaches sometimes can deliver and the ocean is full of amazing wonders.
Come and see.

Here below is her collection thus far and each one is of a different specie.

Sadly this one is too damaged to identify.

Now this one is the egg purse of a Twineyed Skate (Raja miraletus)

Another one that we cannot find yet.

Here below we have the egg purse of a St.Joseph Shark (Callorhinchus capensis)

The last big one is a Spearnose Skate (Rostroraja alba)

Finally 3 photos of my octopus, Nautilus egg shell collection.

We were delighted to discover what they they are and I found an excellent site that describes the new and popular challenge for beachcombers to collect Mermaid's purses.
Have a look at this;

And if you want to see how Argonaut octopuses are born from the Nautilus shell have a look at this site;

I hope that you have enjoyed the story and the pictures.

I will have to look out for octopus eggs when I'm next at the beach. I don't think Iv2 seen them before.

The Nautilus shells are very scarce and difficult to find. After 3 years of searching every time that we visit the beach, I have only the two in the post.
So I wish you good luck.

Wonder of the sea, the ocean will never seem to amaze us.

Amazing what exquisite finds on the beach!

Interesting and well worth knowing what one is looking at.

Oh yes, so many ocean secrets and they are a delight to discover.

We had a much bigger one, but at the time we didn't know what it was, so it was dumped when we cleaned the garden.

!LUV also to you guys.

Many little things we only learn about later, regret we did not take a closer look when we had the opportunity.

And so many opportunities went a begging. Younger days to swim in the sea was the main focus, but maturity leads to a wiser eye.

Loved swimming in the sea, not in a long time. Suddenly they have lifted ban on swimming here again, wonder if it has anything to do with holiday makers!

Roads are hell to drive takes hours if going to the other side of town, crazy not much is being done to repair since the floods.

Hi Zac

Cool post, I love mermaid's purses. When I was a teen I found a handful washed up on the beach after a huge storm and the little sharks were still inside them, they weren't dark black like these so they were probably still quite fresh. I put them back in the water but I doubt they would have survived having no longer being attached to kelp or the like.

Are you still allowed to collect nautilus shells? I remember hearing somewhere that they had outlawed it in SA, don't know why they would, I mean it's not like the animal is alive anymore if they've washed up empty on the beach. I must actually look that up. I love the shape of them and how delicate they are.

Hi Andy.

Correct me if I am wrong in thought that you are also in the Cape?

So glad that you know mermaid's purses, as no one over here in our area seems to know them.
Just today I said to Marian that I would love to see one with life emerging from it, and you had such an opportunity albeit under difficult circumstances.
Let's hope that they all survived, as the ocean looks after its own.

Nope, I am not aware that it is illegal to collect empty Nautilus shells and such a law really doesn't make sense. Or maybe the thought is that the empty shells could be re-used by other adult octopus females (joking).
Yes the shells are also my favorite as I know their story and sadly they are difficult to find, as I said elsewhere that we keep a lookout for them every time that we stroll on the beach and in our 3 years here, I have only found the two in the post.

Have some !PIZZA and thank you for the visit.

Hi Zac, thanks for the reply.

I used to live in the Cape, but now up a bit more up north.

You will find a mermaid's purse with a little one inside, I know the universe grants wishes now and again like that.

Maybe I'm thinking of pansy shells or sand dollars as I think they're sometimes called? I seem to remember it being nautilus (or argonauts), but I could be totally wrong, it's been so long since I was in that industry and my memory sucks big time 🤣

I need a walk on the beach! I haven't been shell collecting for too long, maybe your post was the nudge I needed 🙂

Hold onto those gorgeous shells, I think they will become more and more scarce as time moves on. Have a great evening and many thanks for the pizza!

Hi Andy.

Ah okay then I understand.

I wouldn't bank on it to find one, as Mother nature likes to play her tricks on me.

No Idea and I haven't had the time to do some research yet. Apart from our charity work taking a lot of time, I have to rush now to complete the replies on Hive as we have another power cut soon.
But I will get there.

Hidden messages that only a discerning eye can see and no doubt you have such an eye, so I feel that your visit to the beach will occur soon.

They are my treasures and I keep them in a special transparent case.

Because I have seen such a thing before in an aquarium I have known that it's an egg purse from a shark, but of course I wouldn't have known the kind of shark 😁

I love the Nautilus egg shells, Zac, they look amazingly beautiful 😊

Glad that you also know them and it's three people here thus far that know the mermaid's purses. Or maybe four and I am impressed 😊

My favorite shells also as I know the story behind their existence. Beautiful and paper light, but very tough 😉

Cheers and thanks.

All my pleasure, my friend 😊
Since I have seen these purses in that aquarium first I haven't forgotten their shape.

Never knew the nautilus was the shell of an Octopus egg. Used to find so many Mermaids purses on the beaches but never knew what species they were. Very interesting finds and a great post subject.

Two years ago when I collected the first one I thought at first that it was a child's toy. So I gave it to my wife to keep in her beach collections. Then last year she found the small one and we saw that it was exactly the same as the one that I found. That gave me the investigative sniff in the nose and I googled it.
National Geographic is always my first call and there it was! The secret of the Nautilus shell and it looked exactly like my two.

Same thing with the Mermaid's pages, as they were strange and my wife did the research. Many unexpected wonders on the beach my friend.

Now I will wish you a good night as our power cut starts again at 8pm.

I would rather give you a COFFEE token, but there is no such yet, so you will have to settle for some !BEER
