The Silverbloggers Chronicles - Prompt #22: I am what I never wanted to be as a child and young man

"He who spits at the wind risks getting hurt."

This phrase by Israel Rojas Fiel, director and vocalist of the Cuban duo Buena Fe, is an invitation to choose our words carefully, as they can backfire. It's similar to the saying, "I'll never drink from this well."

Why all this reflection? This initiative is very close to my heart, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to participate, even though my story goes against the grain: I became a professional in one of the two fields I always swore as a child I would never pursue.

As a child, like many, I played at being an athlete, journalist, engineer, or musician. The strange thing is, as far as I can remember, I never played at being a doctor or a teacher. In fact, when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would list several professions and confidently state, "I'll never be a doctor or a teacher."

In pre-university, despite having good grades, several teachers encouraged me to study medicine, but I refused. A friend who chose education invited me to enroll, and I maintained my refusal. When I applied For my degree, I applied to Geological Engineering… and that's what I was assigned.

However, after the first year, I dropped out.

I returned home, and my mother suggested I start working at a junior high school. I was still determined to avoid that profession. Instead, I started working as a construction worker's assistant, and after a month, I had to quit that too.

I looked for my mother to ask her to find me a job, and she said, "The only thing I can offer you is a job as a teacher, but you've always refused." So your alternative to being a bricklayer's assistant is to be a teacher."

And so, in September 1986, my journey as a Geography teacher in Junior High began. It has been the most important professional decision of my life.

This profession has given me many of the best moments of my life, allowing me to fulfill myself and become a better human being. In the field of education, I met my wife; we have been married for 28 years, built a home, and found happiness. She allowed me to be part of her children's education and make them a part of my life.

This profession also gave me the opportunity to have many "children," because I was able to be part of their education, working alongside others for their future, and today they are grateful. In this work, I have participated in national and international events and have achieved complete fulfillment from an academic and teaching perspective.

Countless positive things have come into my life, a profession I pursued for over 30 years, and one I entered without being in love with. But, as life would have it, and perhaps because of the My mother's prophetic vision led me to become a teacher… and in doing so, I became a creator.
