Today I wanted to share the wonderful bit of life we saw recently!
Clutch of Mystery Eggs
The summertime is definitely one of those times of year that have all kinds of amazing stuff going on at once. One of the things that we've been on the lookout for at an increasing rate because of how interesting it is, is the bits of life popping up all over the place.
When I was outside the other day getting something out of the car, I'm kind of amazed at how complicated our brains are. If we are in a space that is very familiar to us, our conscious brain takes a break and the subconscious takes over when it comes to keeping a close eye out for the things around us. I am very familiar with the area surrounding our car and I was walking to get something out of the trunk when out of the corner of my eye, I wasn't looking directly at it, I saw something in the bush. I was like hmmm.. that looks out of place.
Sure enough, I glance in the bush and there is this random clutch of eggs!
The eggs were freshly hatched and the odd thing about it all is that where this was, we are pretty far away from a lot of the common areas that we would expect the eggs to be placed down. This does technically have some water nearby to it, but it depends on what you would determine nearby. We have a river about 1/3 or 1/2 a mile away from here, going through a steep uphill for a good portion of it. With it being that far away from the river we were pretty sure that this wasn't a turtle that laid the eggs.
The eggs were about the size of chicken eggs, maybe a tad bit bigger so I am wondering if this is a clutch of duck eggs or what. The area that the eggs were laid was a bit on the smaller side for a duck to squeeze into but it certainly isn't impossible for one to do it.
With any type of egg laying, especially fresh egg, you can bet your dollar that there is an animal out there sniffing them out! Lol that was sadly the case for these mystery eggs. The evening we spotted the eggs we left them where they were and went inside to bed. We came out the following morning to check on them and sure enough, something got into them! We do have coyotes, foxes, raccoons and other critters around at night looking for a meal. For whatever reason, they disturbed the eggs but didn't end up eating them which I thought was strange. They cracked them open and the flies got at them.
We've got 2 eggs left in the little clutch here! We are rooting for them for sure but we aren't sure if the eggs are going to survive. If they last the month of August and don't hatch we are going to dispose of them so they don't smell up the area.
After doing a little research online, it appears that this may be the eggs of a Canadian goose except the mother goose is nowhere to be found. I know we have a bit of cars in the area, being a parking lot, however I have seen Canadian Geese be a lot more aggressive around less than cars so I'm not sure where the mamma is for these eggs.

Whatever eggs they are. Goose or not, I hope they will survive :)
If they looked like chicken eggs, I’d rule out the possibility if them being duck eggs for sure. From what I’ve seen, duck eggs are significantly bigger than chicken eggs. I hope the hatchlings make it though regardless of what they are:)
