Caloenas which means beautiful dove

It is the only living one of its genus. Others have become extinct. Its scientific name is Caloenas nicobarica. Caloenas comes from two words in Ancient Greek which means beautiful dove (read: Caloenas). Meanwhile, Nicobarica is Nicobar, an island located in the sea front of Aceh or Sumatra, about 500 miles to the north. Eleazar Albin in his 1738 book, A Natural History of Birds, mentions that a number of these pigeons were brought from Nicobar where they lived in the wild (see, Vol. III, No. 44).

The first thing that is most interesting about this pigeon, as you can see, is the feathers on its neck which are gray like its head. Its body is bigger than the common pigeon (rock pigeon). From the gray fur, then the feathers turn green and metallic. Also note the pure white tail at the end of the body, and the legs are red. This is a male bird, and truly a pigeon of astonishing beauty.

It is said it usually roams in herds and lives on offshore islands so they are safer from predators. They fly from one island to another and nest in dense forests (read : here). Therefore, of course it is difficult for many people to see this beautiful pigeon directly in its habitat, but, fortunately, this one is being spoiled at a zoo in Aceh Besar. It is present at the zoo to represent the species in introducing their existence as well as to call on them to be protected from various threats that threaten their survival (check: Conservation).

That is a stunningly beautiful bird and your photos are exceptional! I am constantly amazed by how many birds there are in the world that I am completely unaware of. Thanks so much for introducing this one to us!

Thank you very much for the excellent response. I intend to do better than that, but that's all I can. Thank you also for all the tips from your generosity. Really appreciate that.🙏

TipU is not working and giving out tipss via peakd is a process that takes several steps. I'm doing my best with tips, but keep your fingers crossed that @cardboard is able to get TipU working for us again very soon! 😁

Hello my friend who owns this diary.
This time I have no idea to add but I exclaim sorry for being the only one of its kind in that place, only without having similar company.
This week I have met two more types of pigeons, one called zebra that was Image of the alphabethunt challenge; and now with you, we share this exotic pigeon, out of the ordinary, it seems of a high class lineage.
Greetings.

The Nicobar dove is the only surviving species of the Caloenas order. But this male bird is, in fact, not alone. There was a female accompanying him, it's just that the female was not with him when I took his photo.😁 By the way, I tried to look at the Zebra you mention, but I couldn't find it! Did I misunderstand!😁
