Drongo birds scamming a Woodpecker.

Looked like a friendly and happy Friday scene, as the Olive Woodpecker at the right was hammering away and the Drongo at the left was keeping him company.

Something else was brewing here that we were totally unaware of.

We took a walk next to a river and we heard the familiar hammering of a woodpecker on a tree trunk high up. So we found the "Olive Woodpecker" (Dendropicus fuscescens) chopping at a trunk with his beak.
It was strange to see a black "Fork Tailed Drongo" (Dicrurus adsimilis) sitting near the woodpecker, as this was not normal.

I made this video freehand to give you an idea of what was going on.

The Olive Wood pecker seemed undisturbed and kept on hammering away.

Here is a closer look at the Olive Woodpecker, named as such because of his colors.

This inquisitive lady was the wife of the male Drongo and she also sat watching the Woodpecker.

Look at the holes in that tree trunk made by the Woodpecker.

But suddenly the male Drongo decided that he waited long enough and he attacked the woodpecker that had to fly away.

Hahaha, what a clever Woodpecker, as the Drongo searched around and found no insects. The Woodpecker ate in between the chopping and cleared all of the insects out.
So, there was the Drongos, sitting at either side of the tree trunk with nothing to eat.

This unexpected story reminded me so much of the scammers that we have in our lives. Patiently they design a perfect plan to steal our hard earned money and the Woodpecker's message here for all of us, is to be aware and to make our own plans to confuse them.

All of the time and patience that the two Drongos spent there went up in smoke and they would have been much better off if they went and searched for their own food.
Makes one think doesn't it?

And That's All Friends!

We hope that you have enjoyed this rare story and the pictures.

You caught this in action with a video, well done the Dongo thought he was clever, woody the woodpecker eats as he goes hammering around.

Moral of the story, look after your food source you never know who is lurking waiting patiently to pounce!

Excellent capture today, less wind so must have been all that wind has blown up here, thanks perhaps some rain is on the menu later Stephen.

@tipu curate

Our Grünspecht (Grün = Green) looks about the same. Last year I have seen one, but the bird has been quite fast ... at least too fast for me ;) lol

Good post and photos, as always, and that's a cool video, Zac, and wise words at the end - wished we all would be only half as clever as this woodpecker - Scammers wouldn't have any chance anymore.

Grunspecht direct translation Greenspectacles that makes a bird look green. Wonderful German invention Hannes 🤣
Now don't get upset and scare the cat again, as I am only joking.

Always when a guy of your stature in the photographic fields say a good word about my posts, I feel honored (not joking)
I just had to video the incident, as it is very rare to see that over here. Drongo's are not known to wait so patiently near a score, as they normally just rush in. Also amazing is that woodpeckers don't endure other birds near them, but in this case that woodpecker was determined to eat his fill.
A very clever move methinks and good advice for us regarding scammers.

Thank you kindly for appreciating the post.

Cheers and thanks!

Haha, no, I'm not upset and I won't try to explain the correct translation 🤣

It's always a pleasure for me, you're most welcome my friend and the video was a great idea. You should post such more often 😃

Oh yeah, I thought that you would find my poor translation attempt ridiculous, but it worked as at least I got a smile out of you during this stressful time.

The winds here makes videos difficult, but I do them whenever I can.
Blessings and thank you once again.

Cheers and thanks!
