Broad daylight and the sky should be blue as this gull landed on a beach promenade lamp pole.
But no, it was 3 o'clock today and there is a fire in the mountains, so the strong winds spread the fire clouds across the sky. We are not known as the "Cape of Storms" for nothing and it was a first for us to see this wonder.
Come let me show you!
The fire is burning in the mountain range behind this mountain and the clouds are blown over towards the sea.
I thought that only the crows would fly in weather like this.
This crow also didn't seem bothered about the hot clouds!
Here you can see the front lead of the fire clouds!
The starlings were clever, as they sat on a cable of the goal posts netting in an open field
I parked our car next to the field, as I was waiting for some special birds to arrive.
And I was not disappointed as one of the special birds arrived after a while.
I think that this was one of the "Black Kites" (Milvus Migrans) that live in the area.
He headed off towards the fire, as he knew that there would be fleeing rabbits, rodents and reptiles.
We are regularly plagued by fires here and lose many hectares of valuable farm crops, animals and even human lives.
Wide open spaces blazing away and ending up in ashes is a fearful sight. Yet so many fires get started through sheer negligence, I mean who would start a campfire in a very strong wind? Of course arson and other factors also play a big role in starting fires and one has to always be on the lookout.
We have some amazing teams of firefighters and we thank our God for their bravery and care.

As said in the other comment, I hope they can stop the fire. Hopefully nobody will die and the damages will be not too bad.

News just in, two firefighters seriously injured and they are saying that today the fire is a week old Hannes.
But like I said previously, I will do a follow up post today.

Oh yeah, and one of them, a fire chief was a friend of ours since we started Papillon, he also moved us down here and sadly he died last year. He was the same age as me.

Amazing shots of the fire clouds and the birds. When out of control fire can be a danger to man and beast. I hope it is stopped now and no one is injured.

Some 5000 hectares already wasted Lady Jo and we returned now from the mountains, as we saw flames on the rim of the mountain on our side.
Yes, it is dangerous and I think that the grape farmers will be in real trouble if that fire spreads down here. Huge old 40 meter high trees just literally explode in the heat and if only the strong winds lie down the firefighters will stand a better chance of killing it.
But we continue to pray.

BEER.Wow!! The sight of that scares the bejesus out of me. Having lived out in California where they are plagued by wildfires, I think they are scary.
The only saving grace is the beauty you captured!!
Oh yes, it's scary indeed Lady Denise.
We have just returned from a drive out to the mountains, late at night I know, but I was taking shots of the moon when I saw flickers of flame on the mountain peaks on our side.
I have a friend in California that sent us pictures one time of their fires and it's the dense undergrowth that sets everything alight in the peaks. Now if those flames reaches the forests lower down this side, we will be in real trouble. One of our historical farms Lourensford have already been touched by the fire.
The residents in a few towns like Jonkershoek are on high alert and waiting for the signal to evacuate, so it's indeed a terrible thing.
