Pied Crow molting!

Have a look at his bare chest, as he is in the process of taking off his youngster suit.

My first time to see a molting crow!

Pied crows (Corvus albus) replace their feathers in a process called "molting" and it was amazing to get this guy in the act of molting.
Some new disturbing facts have also emerged about the repercussions related to the large numbers of Pied crows breeding in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Come and have a look.

I heard the crow's familiar call and as I found him, I saw that something on his chest did not look right, as normally it is covered by a full coat of white feathers.

So I looked a bit closer on the zoom and yes, I saw that this young guy was in the molting process.
He was announcing loudly to all that he was now becoming an adult.

He continued to pluck the old feathers off his body.

Here he looked like he was at a drunken party and he had a late night out hahaha.

The news is that the crow population over here is growing at the fastest rate in the country and there are major concerns about this.

Can you imagine what this farmer is going through?

Since arriving in April he has been forced to slit the throats of 21 ewes and more than 30 lambs after discovering them with their eyeballs pecked out, a signature of the large black and white birds, which have been increasing in numbers in the Western Cape since the late 1980s.

So yes, these amazingly intelligent birds are becoming a major threat in the country. It is said in the article that global warming is responsible for the Pied crows invasion now in the Western Cape Province, so before we know it, we are going to have a real problem on our hands.

And That's All Friends!
