I don't see these birds very often, even though they are numerous. In autumn, they fly around the forests in noisy flocks. They sit on birch trees and peck out seeds from birch catkins. In spring, they are few in number, most fly away to coniferous forests.
Males are yellow below, and slightly yellow-green on the back, with a black cap. But females are pale, with dark stripes along the bottom of the body. Although, if you look closely, they also have a slight yellowish tint on the chest, as if burnt out in the sun.
