🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)
📚 Dryocopus (Greek): drys, dendron - tree; kopos, koptō - hit | martius (lat.) : warlike, fighting; March
I found these two big guys on a small lawn in the forest. They were a female and a male. In the first and third photos of the female, note that the females have a small red cap on the back of the head. And the male, in the second photo, has a long red cap along the entire length of his head.
The female examined the fallen tree, and even traces of her activity are visible. She looked for larvae in the tree, and ate ants crawling on it. And the male was not far from her, he examined the remains of the tree. It is easy to find food in such leftovers.
Woodpecker out and about finding male and female, excellent photography along with all the information to learn more, thanks @ratel
The male is absolutely stunning all black with that red cap, great picture.
