As it was Thanksgiving yesterday here's a few turkey pictures and some others birds for this #featheredfriday by @melinda010100
My wife made a nice turkey stuffed with oranges, butter and sour kraut to tender up the meat. It works out amazingly. It would be quite a chore to try and get rid of the gamey taste of a wild turkey though.
Around here there are plenty of wild turkeys roaming around, it would be fairly easy to get a license to hunt them. I just don't know how to get rid of their gamey taste.
This turkey ran away right as it saw me. This one was spotted earlier this spring, I'm sure they get extra edgy when November rolls around.
In spring the males are quite brazen and are too busy trying to impress the females than worry about photographers getting too close to them.
During their hunting season which is mostly in fall they really disappear and hide. In this state you can also get some licenses for early spring but you really have to go out in remote areas to hunt them. The smarter turkeys setup territories around the suburbs where hunting isn't allowed. Then they can raid gardens with impunity lol.
Meanwhile the Canadian Geese are ever present around here. I wonder if these guys could be substituted for turkey?
They love pooping up the football field here.
The only thing that scares them are dogs let off the leash. Even then they have to be a big dog to scare these guys. I've seen them hiss at smaller dogs and scare them away back to their owners.
Meanwhile the blue jay is wondering if it can get a piece of my Thanksgiving turkey.
They are somewhat opportunistic for winter calories and would not think twice about eating some turkey. They prefer peanuts and millet though.
Hey man throw me that leg bone, I'm hungry over here...

The "wild" turkeys around here are pretty brazen, they have no fear of predators in the suburbs other than pet dogs and coyotes.

Lovely looking turkey. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving 🙂 We lived in a suburban area of California that was full of fearless turkey and deer. There are lots of turkey and deer here in rural Vermont but they are considerably more skittish lol
Thanksgiving was great, still bloated from eating too much. The deer and turkey are abundant here too in the suburbs and they are pretty tame. The more rural the more wild, they probably have to deal with common predators like coyotes and wild cats the more rural you get. I know people who go turkey hunting but they rarely ever get one because its out in the middle of nowhere. In the suburbs you could almost just trap one in a tricky fence structure after putting some food out.
