I finally upgraded my PC storage by adding a 1TB M.2 SSD

in Geek Zone2 years ago

One of the things that's been nagging me for a while with my PC has been my limited SSD storage. I've been living life with a 200GB SSD for the last six years and now it was finally time to upgrade it.

I decided to blast out the big guns and went for a 1TB SSD this time. Western Digital has always made good storage gear so I went with the WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe™ SSD with Heatsink. Since my go-to tech shop had a huge weeklong sale I got it 33% off which definitely helked. I still had to pay $150 for this bad boy though. This thing has some awesome speeds at 7000/5300 MB/s read/write. I can actually plug it into a PS5 as well if I end up getting one in the future and need some extra storage.

I also got myself a floor mat to have under my desk so I don't scratch up the floor anymore than it already is and a boom arm for my microphone. That clears up some space on my desk as I used to have it on a desk stand before which made it absorb a lot of noises from hitting the table and such. Quite annoying.

For the first time now I feel like there's nothing I'm missing for my PC setup. Everything I have is pretty much of the latest generation so I won't have to do anything to my PC in a long time.

Everything is in order for me to focus on my new YouTube channel called Totally Free Gaming so that I can do my best to create som top notch content. Having this SSD has allowed me to move all my games over there while leaving my 2TB HDD free to store recordings and other material I need to produce my videos.

When it arrived I was quite surprised at how small it was. I've never seen any of these SSDs in the flesh before. Good thing it was this small though as there's not a lot of free space in my case at all. Also good thing I have tiny baby hands cause getting this thing down and in between the GPU and CPU fan wasn't easy.

I also took a really cool picture after I had mounted it. Kinda looks like a top down photo of a futuristic city with skyscrapers and stuff like that.

I'm really glad that my PC is set for the coming years now. With a Ryzen 7 5800X and a RTX 3070 Ti I should be able to handle anything the gaming industry decides to throw my way. At least for a few years.

For those that don't know it yet I started a new YouTube Channel recently focused around Free-to-Play gaming. Feel free to check it out if that's something that interests you. I posted my first video two days ago about a game called Knockout City.

Congratulations on your great purchases! A 1TB solid state drive is nice. Those small drives are the famous M2, I have a similar one but 256gb, they are the best of the best. I'll be visiting your channel there for sure to see those gameplays. Bye bro!

Cheers! Appreciate you checking out my channel.

It's so nice not worrying about having enough space for games. It was so annoying having to do clean up every time I wanted to install something new.

I think if @elizabeths14 was reading this she could understand what it is like to have limited memory on a computer hehe. It's good these advances you have made, they are achievements for you, as everything goes little by little and now you can concentrate your time, energy and desire in your new projects. Nothing more uncomfortable than feeling limited and this will no longer be your case.

Yeah dude! I wasn't really feeling limited before but it was a nuisance for sure. Having to do constant cleanup. My PC will probably turn into a mess now that I have all this space. Gotta create a system to keep it tidy.

Hello, first of all welcome to this community, that good PC looks in the pictures, with that graphic ufff you have plenty, I can not even imagine the other components of your computer, in the near future I hope to make all is investment.

Very good post, I will give you a little secret, since I see that you are not a Verified Geek member, here I leave the rules, you read them and at the end you comment if you accept them, then in a short time you will be a member of this great family.

A big hug

Cheers! I went and accepted those rules. I read them before but didn't notice you could comment to get that role.

don't worry bro, that's what we are here for, to help each other and keep growing.

A big hug.

Your computer's ready to go into space with that equipment. But dude, you should have told us sooner and we could have bought it for 150 bucks. And we could have played Knockout City, Fall Guys, Fortnite with you like crazy...
Anyway balls ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I had those games installed before as well but on my HDD. It wasn't the end of the world but I do very much prefer the faster load times of an SSD. Now I have one SSD dedicated to Windows and apps while I have this new SSD purely for games and Adobe.

BALLS

Have fun with that new games dude. I can't wait to see you throw more BALLS at your opponents' heads.

Why do you keep buying these things, MOM? We need food in the house, I'm starving!P.S please leave me out of the basement, my crap bucket is full again.

Just buy a bigger bucket, jeez.

I do but you keep selling it for crack!

I'll sell you for crack next.

First of all - thats a fantastic upgrade (and the floor mat is essential, I couldn't live without mine)

Second - You just blew my freaking mind! The last time I looked at 1TB SSDs, the damn things would have cost me half a kidney! This isn't even $200 CAD, which makes it an immediate addition to my shopping list for when I need an upgrade.

The floor mat is great. So nice to have something soft under your feet.

I know dude, this thing would probably have cost double the price two years ago. I'm super happy I jumped it during the sale. It was the missing link in my computer. Hope you can get one soon!

I'm glad you upgraded your PC storage, it's a very nice addition.

I have a 500GB drive but it's the solid kind, I've been unable to upgrade for a while, but it still allows me to play some of today's high demanding games.

Cheers!

That drive will only hold you back in form of load times so you should be good. I just love everything being super fast. When I played God of War installed on my HDD the cutscenes ended up lagging though. That kinda sucked.

Amazing dude! It's amazing how this kind of storage is getting smaller and smaller, you already have the dream setup without any doubt to give hard to the new project :P

Absolutely! Next thing I'm upgrading will probably be a new monitor. I've been oogling over some ultra wides.

I hope you can get your new card soon! It should help a bit that the prices have been falling. I pretty much bought my 3070 Ti on the top.

I vacuum around my PC every day but the case in itself is close to dust proof. I've opened it three times since I bought it last May and I've barely seen any dust in there.

NICE! i luv the look of that HDD. I still have the old sku drives.. next time I'll get those 'little' chip looking drives that can just plug into your mobo. I did recently part with $15 to up my RAM to 16GB. 😁

This is one of those little chips that you plug into the mobo though. Its nice that the assembly is so simple instead of having to deal with cables and crap like that. Nice to hear you upgraded your RAM!

💪😉

I love it, I'm glad you have this disc. I recently installed an m.2 drive in my pc, honestly I had forgotten that my motherboard was compatible. I did not hesitate much and bought one of the same brand, but 3rd generation and my computer is now another one. I still need to buy another one, but this time it will be a normal SSD, because I'm almost out of storage, games are using more and more storage XD.

Congratulations for your purchase!

It's wild how big some games are becoming. I remember when I played Warzone a few years ago it was over 100GB. That was more than half of my SSD at the time. I guess we can never have enough storage.

maaannn. love the monochrome color scheme of this computer.

NO LIGHTS. ONLY DARK.

ps. i had to comment on the clean&cool black look of that case interior..

Congrats on your purchase my man. Im really happy for you. Rigth now i have 2 240gb SSD so i kinda know your suffering before this new one.

I hope it serve u well, have a nice weekend bro!

!PGM

That's my dream, M.2, congratulations!

Huge! Do it myself but with a 256gb in Argentina is pretty expensive to upgrade tech but i do my best =P

Do you have 2 slots for the SSD? If so you can use the old one for memory swap and dont charge the main disk with innecesary tasks (or thats what im dreaming to do when i buy a biggest SSD

Great post and congrats!

I still have the old one plugged in. It’s one of the older SATA discs so it doesn’t take up any of me M.2 slots.

SSD´s are the best thing happen to computers in the last 10 years!
