Camera rotation lightpainting photography on Hive

in Lightpainters United4 years ago

I've been a big fan of camera rotation photography for a few years now and I realised lately I may have been making stuff which is way more complex than is absolutely necessary. This is a set where a simple 180 degree rotation of the camera is all that is required to make a subject turn heads, quite literally!

This first image was shot with @fadetoblack who very kindly stood with a drill full of burning steel wool at arms length while I fired a flashgun from the rear. In between each burn of wool, I replaced the lens cap without ending the exposure so as not to overexpose the sensor. It's a testament to how well we work together to see Tim replicate the exact angle for the 2nd burn. There isn't many people who would understand the need for OCD in these shots!

This was an experiment with a laser level device I use at work in my day job. For this shot I threw several smoke pellets on the floor to catch the beam to make a 'carpet' of light. Another 180 rotation and more smoke made this experiment work!

Here I've used a lens diffraction filter on the front of a 50mm manual lens to make a double silhouette in one corner then rotated the camera 180 degrees freehand:

And finally this is Padley Gorge in Derbyshire, still one of our favourite 'go to' locations with it's gnarly and twisted sessile oak trees. It's literally a backlit silhouette with two different colour gels on each of the two angles:

All of the above images were created in one photographic exposure and are not Photoshop creations!

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
