The God Particle - using an iPad as a light source in light painting

in Lightpainters United4 years ago

I agonised for ages whether an iPad was a legitimate tool to create light painting images but tried it anyways after @fadetoblack started producing some simply epic shots with his tablet. I may have become a little obsessed with the technique over the years:

The God Particle:

For this shot, I first shot the image of the famous Michelangelo work making sure that God's pointed finger was lined up towards the left hand third. I then replaced the lens cap with ending the exposure and swapped the camera to another tripod pointed down the tracks in this abandoned railway tunnel. Then, in complete darkness, I swapped lenses to a 12mm full frame fisheye lens. I got my LP buddy, Neil R, to pose on a marker point and I fired the flash. I then moved to the same spot where Neil was stood and spun an orb which for once was a decent one (I don't always get orbs this good having three left feet!). Job done, this image is shot in one photographic exposure and the iPad image became an integral part of the shot.

I was also inspired by the Bladerunner 2049 film and the colours they used in the cinematography; same technique as above:

And here I've used an iPad image of a nebulae to add more of an ethereal feel to an image in a gnarly forest: (This one won the Oviedo International Lightpainting Awards in 2017)

And finally a more recent shot with an iPad eye in the middle of a chip on a circuit board:

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
