Hola querida Comunidad 🌷✨

In my previous post, I told you about my diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes in my pregnancy. Receiving the news was not at all pleasant. A roller coaster of feelings invaded me but I decided to face my situation with maturity, responsibility and a lot of empathy. In the end it is about my baby's life and health and my own as well.

Just yesterday, Wednesday, March 9th, I went to my appointment with the endocrinologist and I was hoping not to take insulin. But when the doctor saw my blood glucose levels, he was alarmed, regardless of the strict diet I had, my levels were too high for dinner and breakfast, while for lunch they were too low. This meant that my glycemia was out of control. So the verdict was clear: I had to take insulin. I left the consultation super bad and sad. I thought that my good performance with food would bring me better results but well. I took it very calmly and was referred to the endocrinologist's nurse. I waited a few minutes for her to explain how I should take the two types of insulin they gave me: a fast insulin for breakfast and a slow insulin for dinner.

This issue of taking insulin for me is very delicate. I had a cousin who died at the age of 18 for not taking good care of himself. He was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 4 years old and from that age he was injecting himself. He always had a lot of restrictions with his food. I had a lot of mixed feelings going back to that time and it was quite traumatic for our family. It was very painful, he was only 18 years old! But it all happened because she didn't take care of herself the right way when he became a teenager.

I left the hospital with a lot of peace of mind but very sad. I really thought I would escape from taking insulin. But the reality was different, so I had to face it. I took a bus on my way home but got off first at the health center where I live, with an order to pick up a needle to prick myself until the end of my pregnancy. I am in week 26, so 14 weeks to go. Then I took another bus and got off at the pharmacy, just above the health center. But since it is an uphill climb, I get tired too quickly. I went to get my insulin and headed straight home, taking another bus home to rest and assimilate the news a bit. I had lunch, showered and lay in bed all afternoon assimilating my situation. By the time my husband got home, he had just come home from work and had brought me a present to cheer me up. I just burst into tears because I was so upset with the news but he hugged me and told me that everything would be okay. His support is fundamental for me in this process and I love him even more because of how understanding he is.

I know it is not the end of the world. Many people, including my doctor told me that because of my age, my medical history of family members with diabetes, the episodes of high blood pressure I had in the past, could have triggered this condition, but he told me not to lose faith and that if I put even more of my part, I could get out of this bad episode after my pregnancy. Of course, I have a yearly check-up to monitor this condition. I will continue doing my part with my diet and taking things calmly, accepting my diagnosis with responsibility, everything will get better with God's favor. But we must encourage good eating habits in our children from an early age to avoid greater evils when they grow up. According to the WHO, it recommends the consumption of sugar in children from the age of 2 years and the truth seems quite reasonable to me. I have several friends who are new moms who are implementing a healthy lifestyle for their babies and that also motivates me to want the best for mine.

¡Hola, querida @royvego55!
