HARDSHIP IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "HARDSHIP IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS”.
Almost all or most of us have seen the four walls of tertiary institutions, and during our time as students, we realized that our universities are quite different from all they have been portrayed to be. The fun, excitement and transformation that happens in there is of immense value to us, but for many students, it comes with its fair share of challenges. Beyond academics, students constantly experience various forms of financial pressure, emotional stress, and the struggle to excel in their studies. While some of these situations may feel manageable, others can become too overwhelming, making one question whether to give up on everything or keep striving with hope for the future.

Here’s the question!

How does financial hardship affect students’ academic performance, psychological behaviour and overall experience in tertiary institutions, and in what ways have you seen or experienced this?

OR

Do you think students can still thrive academically despite their pressing financial struggles? If yes, how do you think this can be achieved? Should they be encouraged to take up side gigs or just focus solely on their studies?

If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.

Okay Let's Gist!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

Honestly, this weekend's topic made me remember a girl who lost her dad recently and the dad was the sole provider for academics funding including all allowances or living expenses.
Unfortunately for her, she was exposed to a luxury way of living by her dad and this is why I termed it as been unfortunate:

  • The mum isn't buoyant enough to take up that role and she has since divorced the man (though verbally). It took her 2 days to provide the girl with 3,500naira only to eat
  • Father's family had seized all properties remaining after the late man's sickness expenses

So there's absolutely gonna be a huge bridge between the life she once lived and the one that is to come. So howwwww won't such girl be affected in the course of this so-called academics?

You know, It is easier when you're matured in age or thinking while entering into higher institution and you've always known that there are days it may not boom nicely if it is booming presently and you can always handle these financial crisis by taking up some side jobs IF YOU HAVE THE MENTAL AND STRENGTH CAPACITY or just manage with the provision you have from home and ensure you don't end up suffering in two places by failing in your academics again

But generally speaking, an unhappy mind is an unhappy and malfunctioning brain 😹.... PEACE OUT✌️

@van.illa @abdul-qudus @chefqueen oya come and shook mouth
@therichking where have you been?
@marsdave I'm here. I've marked attendance

Omo...
Body to tell that girl o, and I feel for her .
It is well though.. there's no way you will have issues financially and expect it not to affect your academics.... Impossicant

Very impossicanter
I feel for her too

It is well sha ☺️

via Apps from

It's really painful to lose a parent in school, it will definitely affect finances. I feel for the girl.

Money is very necessary to succeed in school, she just needs to start learning how to manage, cut down on luxury and starts side gig, you can introduce her to hive too.

Yeah maybe when I get to see the mum sha

My answer is even confusing me; whether yes, no or both. So it’s 50/50 🤭
You know the saying, “an hungry man is an angry man”? It’s true. Anybody trying to be productive on an empty stomach is already fighting a battle. Imagine a student in a lecture hall, Lecturer is teaching, but if you’re hungry, that man might start looking like a hot plate of Afang soup 🥹 You’ll be distracted and won’t assimilate. If you have debts like school fees to clear, you won’t even have the motivation to go to school, thinking go wan kpai you 😂
True, financial struggle isn’t just about food. No data to download PDFs, get class updates, No transport to school? Can’t print assignments? It tells on your academics badly. They fit later graduate leave you 😂

So should students take side gigs? Yes, but with wisdom. Jobs can distract you o but “Person wey no sabi book, no sabi book.” So don’t allow your job distract you when schooling. School should be 60% Job 40%. Because if you fail, nobody will easily remember that it’s because you’re broke that’s why you didn’t do well in school, there are many people without financial assistance except the one they worked for themselves and they excelled in their academics. And trust humans to mention people that excelled in school without financial assistance. Reminds me of a coursemate that couldn’t do a group project because of his job, and the lecturer asked him during evaluation “is this a school or a market?” So in all, not everyone cares about your struggles, their own is; do the right thing at the right time. Nobody is coming to save you; so save yourself ❤️

Na my 1million cents be this 🫠

Do you think students can still thrive academically despite their pressing financial struggles? If yes, how do you think this can be achieved? Should they be encouraged to take up side gigs or just focus solely on their studies?

Answer
Yes. That's because I've witnessed a lot of students strive even when struggling financially. I have a classmate back in tertiary institution who probably came from a poor family, while others worry about what to eat, all be needed was #50 to get pap for the day. He managed through, eating the same meal and wasn't bothered. He was one of the best graduating students.

Regarding taking side hustle, if there's an opportunity to, why not. Unlike the past, the world operates digitally and opportunities are online, one can grab one and live a comfortable life while still studying.

Do you think students can still thrive academically despite their pressing financial struggles? If yes, how do you think this can be achieved? Should they be encouraged to take up side gigs or just focus solely on their studies?

Yes, I think so and I am a living testimony. When I say I suffered financially as a university student , it's an understatement , but despite all odds,I thrived a academically because I defined what I want to achieve at the end and it made me stay focused all through. I created time table for my study and followed it strictly plus the side business i.did to support the little i do get from my parents back then.

Overall,it's all about intentionality. Excuses doesn't pay bills neither does it offers free good grades. Students must be intentional regardless of financial constraints and with that ,nothing can limit you !

Do you think students can still thrive academically despite their pressing financial struggles? If yes, how do you think this can be achieved? Should they be encouraged to take up side gigs or just focus solely on their studies?

Yes, students can thrive academically despite financial struggles. I have been there and survived it. It's not going to be easy but with strong determination, unwavering focus, a structured timetable, contentment and side gig to assist oneself. It didn't affect my academic performance because I always encouraged myself to succeed despite predicament. I used to auto suggest those thoughts because there were overwhelming days. As I look back today, we are not counting zero-one-zero. For now persist till you win

Imagine a student who is going for lectures with an empty stomach and has no plan for what to eat, a student who hasn't payed his departmental fee talk less of school fees or his course handouts, I have not even talked about data or transport fare or even money they didn't budget for. Trust me, all these will have effect on any student and it will definitely slow such student down academically. They said it's the strength of the inside that we use to carry the strength of the outside. If any student is in that position I mentioned, I'm sure their minds won't be on book, they will definitely be calculating how to survive. What I know is that if some basic needs are not accessible to students, they will be affected and might have equally fall apart.

And on the side gig question, that is not new because I know a lot of students back then and even now doing that..I have a lot of them on my WhatsApp selling one or two which is absolutely good especially in this economy that we find ourselves. So for the latter, I'll say they should not be discouraged, in fact, if any student have the ability and can carry on with the two without one stopping eachother, they should because at the end of the day, the job outside now is by who Sabi person, and the earlier they handle their side gigs well, the better. My small two percent on this.

This is way more than two cents... This is 50 Cent 😁😁😁..

And you're right about that bro, eve if you have a supporter and all, still don't sleep. Find something doing.. anything can happen make he no go turn into .. "had I known"

You get it... thanks for the contribution

Muh welcome 🤗

This is more than two cents bro. This is a hundred cent hahaha. Your first paragraph got me. An empty stomach won’t be able to stomach anything in class… side gig is definitely a way but then a whole lot is attached to it, especially for someone who wants to achieve the best as a student…

Brr, I remember one time like that. I went for a morning lecture, 7am, that was supposed to be the only lecture for that day. The man said 7-10, Omo, after 4, we still dey there oo. I lost concentration at some point. Now imagine some student in the situation for days, throughout the semester ooo, na just one time experience I felt that way. That is why back then, if any student or coursemate, or hotel mate come to me for one or two, I give the little I have cos I know what it means to be in that position.
Yeah, it's a whole lot, that is why I said they must learn to balance it so one won't affect the other

Financial situations are usually a big issue when it comes to tertiary education.

I can say that if you have your financial needs catered for by someone, so you don't have to worry about it, your academic performance will most likely be good.

But when you're struggling financially, it's takes a huge toll on you as a student. Emotionally, physically and every other way possible, you will struggle. Most times, people look for side gigs to help themselves financially, but this only means they would allocate the time they would have used for academics to that side gig.

The end result most times is a drastic decline in academic performance. Ultimately, you find people just looking for a way to graduate irrespective of what CGPA or grades they graduate with.

Very true

This is so true...
You nailed it, sir.

I can’t agree more on this, academic decline is the mostly the end result of this but then I strongly believe it’s not always that way is some cases…

No be lie
Situation arising these days

Like Israelites in the hands of Pharaoh.... Let me just go

You didn't just say it all, you also say some people's mind here..
Sometime when I think of struggling by myself in the university to pay my bills, it's makes feel drained and unfocused..
I just put my hope in God almighty.
Thank you for sharing sir....

Today you're in church and tomorrow you're jumping and drinking gin from your father's household masquerade festival shouting like benbe anobi

Hello everyone,
Life in school wasn't funny, oh.
Staying in the hostel was the height of it; I suffered. Bed bugs and lice were always in my hair and bed.

I learned that having a skill is very important; if not, you will hit rock bottom. If you're low on money as a student, it automatically affects your performance all around.

I was into baking, perfume selling, and making hair just to make ends meet. Moving out of the hostel finally in my 300 level was the best thing ever for me.

To others still in school, please hang on and manage. To those entering, please learn a skill.

I'm inviting
@soma18
@marsdave

Thanks a lot for the tag, Bethel because honestly, this message of yours is for me.

I don't dare to undermine the massive benefit of having one or two skills as an individual, most especially in this current situation of the economy 😢.

It's good to know you found a way around school life and the hardships that come with it in your own little way 😊.

Yea, dear, skill acquisition is very important.

Update: @sam.hangout, I paid out 36.780 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 16 comments in this discussion thread.
