Sam’s Hangout #112 - “HONESTY OR HARMONY?”

in Hive Naija3 months ago (edited)

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” — Martin Luther King Jr."

Hello, my lovely Hive Naija people. It’s another beautiful weekend, and we’re excited to have you here once again. A new weekend simply means another chance to buzz the Hive blockchain, connect with one another, and simply have fun. You'll also agree with me that there’s something special about bringing everyone together to gist, share opinions, and enjoy good vibes. That is exactly the reason we will continue to meet every weekend.

HONESTY OR HARMONY

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "HONESTY OR HARMONY”.
In life, there are moments when we are faced with the decision to choose between truth and silence, and both have the power to change everything. Sometimes they bring clarity and freedom, while other times they can damage relationships and disrupt our peace. Because of this, many individuals find themselves torn between speaking honestly and remaining silent for the sake of harmony. But in trying to protect peace, are we preserving relationships or simply avoiding uncomfortable realities?

Here's the question!

Do you believe people should always tell the truth, even when it could destroy relationships, disrupt peace, or permanently change how others see them or someone else?
If yes, how do you deal with the consequences that come with such truths?

OR

Do you believe some truths are better left unsaid in order to protect relationships and prevent resentment or hatred from growing between people? If yes, do you think lasting peace can truly be achieved through silence or avoidance of the truth? And if you have personally experienced this working positively, please share your experience with us.

If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.

Okay Let's Gist!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

Honesty or Harmony: It Depends on What You’re Protecting

I don’t think “always tell the truth” or “always stay silent” works as a rule. The better question is: what is the truth for, and what is the silence protecting?

There are truths that should be said even if they damage a relationship. If someone is being hurt, deceived, or set up to fail, silence isn’t preserving harmony. It’s preserving a lie. In those cases, telling the truth is the only way to make a real relationship possible later. A relationship built on avoidance isn’t a relationship. It’s mutual performance. It collapses the moment reality intrudes. I’ve seen friendships end after a hard conversation, and both people later say it was the first honest thing they’d done in years. The short-term damage was real, but the alternative was a slow decay of trust.

But not every truth needs to be said, and not every moment needs to be the moment. Some facts are about my preferences, old grudges, or judgments about someone’s character that won’t change anything except their mood. Saying those out loud often creates resentment without creating clarity. That’s not harmony. That’s just avoiding conflict by creating new conflict.

When I do tell a truth that I know will hurt, I try to handle the consequences in three ways. First, I separate the fact from my judgment of the person. “You missed the deadline” is different from “You’re unreliable.” Second, I take responsibility for my part and state what I need going forward, not just what went wrong. Third, I accept that the other person gets to react badly. Truth doesn’t guarantee a good reception. If I speak to control their reaction, I’m not being honest. I’m negotiating.

When I choose silence, I check my motive. Am I quiet to protect them, or to protect myself from discomfort? If it’s the second, I’m usually avoiding something I should face. Lasting peace doesn’t come from avoidance. It comes from trust that hard things can be said and survived.

So my stance is: tell the truth when it prevents harm or when the relationship can’t survive without it. Stay silent when the truth is just noise. The skill is knowing the difference, and that only comes from being willing to face the fallout either way.

@sarahbaby
@zusi78
@goldenproject
@daverick

Oya make una put mouth for the matter, take mic 🎤.

I understand your point, and I agree that not everything needs to be said out loud, especially when it comes from old grudge or judgements that no longer help anyone grow.

But there is different between speaking truth that brings clarity and speaking from emotions or past hurts. If what is being said will only damage someone's mood, reopen old wounds, or even create unnecessary tension without providing any solution, then silence sometimes should be the wiser choice.
But we should be careful not to confuse silence with avoidance of truth.

Hello everyone , happy weekend.
On this topic, I will say just say, I think it's better to always say the truth than to keep things away because if you do keep some things away , believe me that truth you were hiding would come back to hunt you one way or the other.
So why not just let it out and be done with, yes relationship will be threatened and all that stuff , but you see nothing beats having a clear conscience in a relationship, so what are we even saying? Why tell a lie when it night get revealed one way or the other.

@henryjnrr @cohlson @afrikens
What do you think?

Lies might look like a quick escape in the moment, but they rarely stay hidden forever. In one way or another, the truth has a way of coming out, and when it finally does, it will cause more damage than if it had been spoken from the beginning.

So I strongly agree with you that living with a clear conscience is better than living with the fear of being exposed later.

Loading...

The saying that say the truth and the truth will set you free, doesn't mean one would be free from the consequences but rather one mind will be free from guilt,your mind will be free from being afraid of truth finally coming out. No matter the situation,truth will always prevail but then what I know is that in everything we do, we should apply wisdom,just like it is said even in the bible, the way you present truth matters a lot on different situations. Lie should never be holding up relationship, Trust is what is ever holding relationship, relationship built on lie will eventually collapse,if the truth cannot hold any relationship,then the relationship is not suppose to be, walk away and have your peace .

Remember,embrace truth always.

Happy weekend my people
@marsdave @afriken @van.illa @treasuree

Huhm, a very clear message

Happy weekend chefy.
You said the right thing my dear.
The truth indeed sets you free

Do you believe some truths are better left unsaid in order to protect relationships and prevent resentment or hatred from growing between people? If yes, do you think lasting peace can truly be achieved through silence or avoidance of the truth? And if you have personally experienced this working positively, please share your experience with us.

Yes. Sometimes what keeps a relationship going is the secrets that have not been let out of the bag. Our past sometimes should remain in the past, especially if they weren't events that could easily be swept under the carpet.

Humans demand the truth, but most people can't handle it. Either this truth remains a memory that haunts them or something they weaponize to take advantage over the other. I've seen marriages break because one decided to come up with a truth that never found ground to heal.

Nothing is assured. Hiding the truth may or may not assure lasting peace, especially if what is hidden haunts the bearer himself. But one thing is sure: as long as the bearer isn't burdened by it, peace can be achieved if the truth remains hidden.

The past can stir up wounds that never get healed.

Happy sunday fam, Omo just small owambe here ohh... just that the traditionalist and their masquerade wants to kill efe(a traditional cow).. though it's going to be crowdy, because people from neighborhooding community will come with their different masquerades and some people will also go to watch.. I might go just to watch and maybe take some pictures or vedios🙃🙃..

For this topic, I'm of the opinion that some things are better left buried.

There are times when people must have moved on or recovered from something, and telling the truth would either reopen old wounds or cause massive damage.

I think telling the truth is good, but sometimes you have to weigh the costs of telling that truth and ask yourself if you can bear it.

This topics kind of look like last week own o
@marsdave pls confirm. Am I wrong or something?

It's same as last week's

I was thinking of if I was the one confusing myself before

lol no

Huhm, I'm just on my way home.
Service was awesome. It was youth Sunday today and trust youths to deliver 😁😁😁. It's my first time taking a session in the church I attend here, so my voice was a bit shaky st first 😁. The first time I anchored a program here was not a usual church service stuff, was just an hangout session we had in church and which wa just us youth's... So that wasn't a big deal, but this... Omo. All thanks to God Sha 🙏. And even though I've not been feeling my best for a while now, I tried my best. And I'm trusting God to come through for me 🤞

Well, the whole summary of today's service is that we should be more involved in evangelism. We are being told to go out, evangelize and win soul's for Christ.

Accept Christ today ✌️

Thanks ma'am, how you doing

I am doing great. How about you?

Good to know
I'm good too.

Service today was amazing too, we also had a youth program today and service was handled by the youths. Are a redeemed members.

Be like our pastors had a meeting for evangelism., That's our core work as Christians though
God help us

Abi naw 😔

Lovely Sunday everyone ..I
Hope we are hanging a relaxing Sunday

So.i attended church today and I was reminded of the gifts of the holy Spirit which are wisdom, courage , piety , knowledge ,understanding etc. . We were also encouraged to intentional ask God to give us some of these gifts as it will help us in our daily lives

Exactly. Having the gifts of the Holy Spirit will greatly help us as Christians because that's where the mystery to living a fulfilled life is. For example, speaking in tongues. I can tell how much of the benefits I have enjoyed with it. Happy Sunday, mama.

You are right holy Spirit baby😍

Happy Sunday, Guys 🥰

I'm having a good Sunday, watching movies and planning for the new week.
I didn't attend church today and I have nothing to share .

Enjoy the rest of your day guys 🥰

Happy Sunday everyone.
Yes, I went to church and service was beautiful. I learnt about living a life of Christ in the practical way. A lot was taught. After the service, we had an hour’s session with the children to rehearse with them for their upcoming children’s day service in church next week. Now, I am at home for a while before going for evangelism.

Awwnn 🥰 a while of a while our dear princess. Hope you brought bread and akara
