MASCULINITY & MENTAL HEALTH
Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "MASCULINITY & MENTAL HEALTH”.
For a long time, conversations around men’s mental health have been consistent in every corner of our society, and in 2026, it's evident that the expectations of emotional control, and the pressure to always appear strong still persists. While the month of June is marked as men's mental health awareness month and highlights the progress over the years, it also reminds us that many men still struggle with expressing vulnerability, seeking support, or admitting when they are not okay. This June, we are raising questions about how society views, supports, and listens to the plights of men.
Here's the question! If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it. Okay Let's Gist!!! Don't you think we are forgetting somebody?... Well, I'm sure we are... To make our hangout more interactive, we have decided to add two events to spice it up. On Saturdays, we share our owanbe stories, party gists, and even pictures. On Sundays, we reflect on the weekend and things we learnt so far, as well as share plans for the new week. Don't forget to join us!! There are no strict rules as regards this weekend hangout. Feel free to speak any Nigerian language you like, whether Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin, Efik, or others, as long as it can be understood. With all that said, let the discussion begin... Yes, I strongly believe that society has created unrealistic expectations about what it means to be a man, and these expectations often make it difficult for men to openly discuss their struggles or ask for help when they need it.
Growing up, I often heard people say things like, "Men don't cry," "Be a man," or "Men should be strong no matter what." While these statements may seem harmless, they can have a deep impact on how men handle their emotions. Many men grow up believing that showing sadness, fear, stress, or emotional pain is a sign of weakness. As a result, they learn to hide their feelings even when they are hurting inside.
In my own observation, many men carry enormous responsibilities every day. They worry about providing for their families, paying bills, supporting relatives, and meeting society's expectations. Yet, very few people stop to ask them how they are coping emotionally. When a man complains about feeling overwhelmed, some people immediately tell him to "man up" instead of listening to what he is going through.
I have seen situations where men continue smiling in public while privately dealing with financial pressure, family problems, or emotional pain. Some suffer in silence because they are afraid of being judged or misunderstood. Others feel that nobody will take their struggles seriously. This can make loneliness and mental health challenges even worse.
I believe a major change is needed in how society defines strength. Being strong should not mean pretending that everything is okay when it is not. Real strength includes being honest about your struggles and having the courage to seek help when necessary. Just as we visit a doctor when we have physical pain, there should be no shame in seeking support when we are emotionally exhausted.
At the same time, men also have a role to play in breaking this stigma. Society can create opportunities for conversation, but men must be willing to use those opportunities. Opening up may feel uncomfortable at first, but it can help others realize they are not alone. When one man speaks honestly about his struggles, he gives other men permission to do the same.
I do not think the responsibility belongs only to men or only to society. Both must work together. Families, friends, workplaces, religious organizations, and communities should encourage healthy conversations about mental health without judgment or ridicule.
In my family, I try to support the men around me by listening more and judging less. Sometimes people are not looking for solutions; they simply need someone who will listen. I also try to show appreciation for the sacrifices men make because many of them quietly carry burdens that others do not see. From my experience visiting less privileged people and spending time with families facing difficult situations, I have learned that everyone, including men, needs compassion, encouragement, and emotional support.
One thing I have come to understand is that vulnerability does not make a man weak. In fact, it takes courage to admit that you are struggling and need help. A man who speaks about his pain is not losing his masculinity; he is taking care of his mental and emotional well-being.
As we mark Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, I hope we continue to create a society where men feel safe enough to say, "I am not okay," without fear of being mocked or judged. When men are supported emotionally, families become stronger, communities become healthier, and society as a whole benefits.
@sarahbaby @ozibaby @zusi78 make una to take mic 🎤.
I am super glad that we're able to talk on this topic even though this is not the very first time we will actually talk about it and there has still been no changes but I AFRIKEN ooo I won't shut up either I'm reasoned with or not.
The fact is that I am annoyed about this whole thing and yes I'll allow my emotions write with me in this. With the kind of society we have groomed for ourselves (cos we are the society and it becomes whatever we want it to become), we are stylishly killing the male gender with so much pressure and expectations.
When a guy is not rich and struggling to survive, we call it hustling but when a lady does same thing, we are referred to as an independent woman. That is not even where I'm going.
If you carry a patched bag but decide to call it a MK designer bag, people call it same thing with you. "Bi onigba ba SE PE igba e niwon se ma ba pe". That is, if the make gender refuse to break this stigma of HE IS A MAN, HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THAT COD WHY IS HE A MAN IF HE CANT, HE IS STRONG SO HES NOT ALLOWED TO BREAK DOWN, NO! HE SHOULDNT BE COMPLAINING IS HE NOT A MAN? HES TALKING TOO MUCH INSTEAD OF ACTING UP..... They will continue to be suppressed by those despicable expectations of the society and that is why I love the second part of the question
YES! THEY SHOULD cos if they don't then it stays there for coming generations to inherit. But the sad news about it that they wouldn't wanna agree to in breaking this stigma of expectations is the EGO
Some of them want the pride that comes with the strongness while some finds it hard to break that barrier of speaking up and been seen or viewed as a woman.
MEN are trying so hard but speaking up? 😔 And it's killing that gender so much. You can make your findings about the rate of men that dies
How many recorded women commits suicide?
You will even mostly see Grandmas than you see Grandpas
Byebye jare make I no talk too much BUT MEN NEED TO BREAK THIS STIGMA OFF THEM COS IF THEY DONT, NOBODY WILL.
@marsdave @goldenproject @zali.bee @hiventhusiast I'm here jare
You have spoken well, dear.
But some men sometimes too do. Should we say that the expectations that people put in them have made them grow up with the thought that a woman's place is in the kitchen? I'm not trying to divert the topic. But this comment mostly comes from men.
If they want to be free from society pressure, I believe they should work on their mindset too.
It has happened to me countless times. One particular incident that I remembered very well. This guy and I were on a talking stage getting to know each other. I talked about my profession, my skills and my plans.
Then he made that one statement. "All these one wey you dey talk na for kitchen e go still end."
Like seriously 😒 I had to start explaining how I stressed myself every semester in school because I want to come out with good grades and make my family proud, and because you feel you're the head, I should keep my license for your kitchen in the 21st century.
And there are more relationships out there that didn't end well because a man couldn't afford to maintain the lifestyle of her partner.
In summary, all I'm trying to say is that society has done a lot of damage because this tradition of man acting all tough didn't start today.
And I believe it's high time it stops, and if men feel they need to be heard, then they should also help themselves.
That's the head point Zali. They need to help themselves by eradicating the expectations created for them and the ones they also created cos a man with no ego of succumbing to society expectations will not think a woman should end her career in kitchen unless it's her decision.
Without actions, society and their mindsets continues to treat them the same way
Exactly you get my point.
This one wey you don talk talk self don much.. I like the way you allowed yourself to speak freely. Thanks for sharing your unbiased thought on this mamaAfrikens
Pele jare I no know say e don much 😂 Thanks for acknowledging FRODO 😜
You are welcome, Afrifat😁😉

they say in life if you're born a male child, life already leading you by 1-0, if you're born from a poor home that is 2-0, if you're born A Nigerian that is 3-0, now the whole of your life is a struggle, in all this men are expected to be strong, show courage, fearless.
most times the ladies do not understand this, expectations are high. demands are endless, except for the God fearing once...
these is a general ideology of the society a man is suppose to manned up to anything no matter what pocket their feeling and keep going..

😆
We men/boys have learnt always to say "I am fine" even when nothing is fine because that is the masculinity that our society has built around the silence of a man's features. You will see a young boy who has been told that crying is a sign of weakness, so they have learned to keep all to themselves, even when they are on the verge of breaking. And by the time such a man has become more mature, this habit of suppression is now part of him and his personality that to even ask for help becomes like a burden on him.
And as for the other question, I feel both should go hand in hand. Our society isn't safe enough for men to always open up. Because at this point, a lot of men cannot even open up to the person they call their partner, for personal reasons known to them and i,n my opinion, the world should be safe enough for us men to have at least one or two people whom we can open up to anytime we feel burdened. Because how do you expect someone to open up to you when you will continue to punish that person? That ain't possible. And what I have been doing in my little circle is that when a man comes to me, that he's passing through one or two, instead of flinching, I rather stay in discomfort with him for some moment, because staying like that can be more useful than all these long talks on what he should have done differently
I've added my 1½cent, you people should come and complete the remaining ½ so we can make it 2cent.
Let's get the two cent started.😁
Eggxactly ooo... If men are being advised to open up as humans they are, rather than having to suppress their emotions, the society should play their part as well by creating an atmosphere that welcomes, understands and equally cares. Otherwise, males might be forced to incline back to their shell.
But wait oo, is this not selfishness ehh 😂... Only you one and half cents leaving the rest of us to scramble for the remaining half 😑😏
Issoright
It's all love my dear, not selfishness. 😉😁
Gettat 😂
I love this topic, and I’ve gone through the comments, and everything y’all said is on point.
In my opinion, one way men can reduce this whole pressure is that, they shouldn’t allow society detect how their life should go. Yes, people have much expectations from you and you’re not quarter to those expectations yet, slow down. Some days, give yourself that treat, don’t solve every puzzle, don’t say yes to everything. Don’t be “Monica” iykyk 😭 Brothers, I’m not saying you should be reckless but choose yourself if the pressure is getting too much. Because that’s what most of us do 🙊
Expectations from family will never end, so why yield to that? So my dears, don’t let what people say or expect from you kill you before your time.
Hello everyone, it's been a while here.
Surrounded by some male friends, I was able to understand the pressure that comes with being a man.
Expectations can be overwhelming, and a lot is expected from men. They are expected to be strong, always in control, and emotionally tough.
So yes, society has created unrealistic expectations around masculinity that make it so hard for men to openly talk about their struggles.
And as a result of this, when they try to express themselves, people see it as a weakness rather than understanding that we are all humans.
This leads to men hiding their emotions, avoiding asking for help, and suffering in silence.
To create a healthy space, we need to redefine the definition of strength. And I believe this should start with our parents. Parents, schools, and communities should raise a boy child how to express their emotions. Strength shouldn't be measured by how much pain one can take and hide.
I think society should encourage open conversations about mental health without judgment.

And thanks for this beauty 😍 piece.
Men are humans too, ad our vulnerabilities shouldn't be seen as weakness
Yeah 👍
😍😍😍
Yeah done Zali.... It's really a partial society on them and I feel for them
I have a lot of male friends too so I quite understand every bit they go through.
Breakfast because time of brokenness showed up when you yourself as a lady no get shingbaiiiiinn except for human head on empty skull
😂😂😂
Beautiful submission, Zali. I love that you highlighted the need for parents and guardians to raise boys with more intentionality, esp seeing how much they're lacking in terms of emotional grit and vulnerability. That balance between both is needed. Happy weekend, babe.
Thank you dear happy weekend ❤️😘
True. And those that were vulnerable and wasn't acknowledged starts telling others that haven't opened up or plan on opening up. Thereby making them shutdown their feelings and die inside. The ones that haven't been vulnerable in their lives are now scared of being vulnerable because "my guy was vulnerable and see how he was treated" so they just keep quiet and die inside silence.
So this whole thing is really crazy but I’m glad the topic is getting more attention now, better late than never, right?
Yeah something needs to be done. The society needs to work on this.
Yepppp
It's been a whileeee Ni-ge-ri-an-ssss but today, I'm fully present in flesh and blood 😌😜
This is just the stigma talked about, the saddening reality the male gender are forced to face, right from the earliest stages of their life. Way before they can even learn to say and spell their names 😑.
Of course the society has a big role to play in eradicating the state of things and at the same time, the males themselves should equally take responsibility towards breaking the bond they have been tied down to.
This might sound funny but even Nigeria wouldn't have gained her independence if her people didn't seek for it, through thick and thin.
The crux of it all is that to truly achieve a human race that acknowledges the pain and emotions of men, all hands must be on deck. Emphasis on all.
The pressure on men is too much, my friend will always say she wants to remain a woman even in her next world, I didn't understand her until we graduated. I finally realized the pressure on men is too much and yet the society feels as a man you should have it all figured out.
Men really need to be encouraged to speak about their emotions and ask for support when they need one.
Men aren't supernatural beings without emotions or feelings. A safe space need to be created for men , by their family and the society, suppressing their feelings and emotions shouldn't be an option.
We should normalize having conversations about mental wellness with men. Supporting this men is showing them compassion, not judging them when they seek for help and they should understand that asking for help is also strength.

Do you think society has created unrealistic expectations around masculinity that make it difficult for men to openly discuss their struggles and seek support? If yes, what changes do you think are needed to create a healthier space for men to express themselves better and be vulnerable without worries?
Answer: Yes. Even as a child, people expect the male child to act differently to events. Over time they develop this idea of hiding their pain from the world to maintain this status that a man should carry.
To change this ideology, Certain people (especially from the other gender) need to show the world the pain men carry around unshared and unspoken of. Every change starts with a knowledge, orienting people about their ignorance or misconception, and it suddenly becomes a force.
When people are oriented, they could become more supportive, affirming them that everything would be alright in hard times. People may sincerely start to ask men "how they are" and never judge them when they learn they've failed over and over again. Knowledge is power
Good morning,Fams ❤️

Men's mental health is an interesting question for discussion
I would love to see more men come out to share their thoughts too
@vickoly, @burlarj ,can you guys ? we want to learn oo
Respect to all the responsible men out there, not easy to be one…
Yea...big respect to those kind of men👌
Good morning everyone, happy weekend.
Whatsup dear ❤️
I'm fine and you?
I'm good too
This is an important topic and I’m glad that everyone else views it the same. Frankly, I believe the onus lies on society to make men feel more safer and vulnerable sharing their problems and feelings with one another. And who is society? It is you, the hardened men out there, the soft ones brought up with love and I, too. We share a responsibility in making sure that we never mock the men who show vulnerability and that we offer support when needed.
However, it’s pertinent to understand that the men also have a huge role to play in their healing and emotional stability. When society still plays on the negative side, men can also find community within their small circles and instead of laughing insensitively about every problem, they can show up for each other better and equally advocate for stronger organizations that protects and teaches the male child to be a valuable member of society that will receive support when due. Happy weeekend.❤️
good luck

Happy Weekend Guys 🥳
It's a boring and busy Saturday, no Owambe as usual 🥺🙃.
It's raining heavily here and I'm spending more time indoors.

That's a good one.
When you're ready to stop having a boring weekend, you know what to do 😁😁😁...

Happy Sunday Fams 🫡
How y'all doing.
Well, I went to church today.
And the topic for Sunday school was "God's timing>" we were told that it's important to wait for God's time because it is the best, and also that there's time for everything under the heavens. Then there were series of prayers. I'm glad I attended service today though even though it's a little stressful.
