It's not clear to me why you couldn't just do this as a community within Hive? Why do you need a separate blockchain? You could build your own interface to only show specific communities or tags on Hive.

Launching an entirely new blockchain is a big deal and requires a lot of ongoing technical effort. Most likely it would become centralized anyway unless you had a lot of people interested in participating. The value of the token rewarded to the witnesses would have to be high and that's a cost to the whole community.

I've talked about it with a handful of people at different levels in the current structure, from @dbroze & John Bush (the founders of the movement) to the folks who organize most of the meetups & comms for the Portland area, etc.

I came in with the idea to just create @freedomcells (I did 😎) and go the route of leofinance.io or naturalmedicine.io, but there are many issues that have been brought up in this specific case:

  1. The fact that governance of the system would be held by those outside the community/organization/movement completely is a big sticking point.
  2. There is concern about the fact that communications are then on a completely public blockchain, and the desire here is more for a more private network, requiring invitation from someone who is already a member (potentially more conditional)
2a. I had thought of doing encrypted communications on Hive, since we could simply encrypt the message/post at the app, and post the encrypted data on the blockchain - but this seems like it would cause a lot of data bloat for the blockchain as a whole, and would limit the size of things posted, right?
  3. Something small like a local community could probably run on Hive without any issues, but with the whole of Freedom Cells and something at that level moving to Hive, there is concern that it would bring a bunch of government attention to Hive.

So, at the moment the idea of building on Hive isn't completely off the table, but it seems like there are some major issues with it for this. Would love to know if you have any insight into those challenges.

  1. Can you define what you mean by governance? If you're talking DPoS, then I can almost guarantee you whatever they come up with will be less secure because it will be less decentralized. Yes, Steem had a takeover so there is a concern there in terms of DPoS, but that too many millions of dollars and coordination of multiple exchanges that were lied to and a stake of tokens that were always a threat and are no longer a threat to Hive. I think you're better of going with an actual decentralized blockchain when it comes to governance concerns.
  2. Yeah, you could encrypt stuff. I did something like that here: https://peakd.com/encryption/@lukestokes/securely-storing-data-backups-on-the-steem-blockchain As for invitation, I wonder if communities could be used in some way to do that or a custom front end that only shows content from whitelisted accounts.
  3. I don't know much about Freedom Cells, but I don't have a lot of concern regarding governments coming after hive. It's a decentralized blockchain. Good luck with that.

I completely agree with @lukestokes and @taskmaster4450. just Keep it simple. All of this doesn't need a new blockchain. a community, an interface linked to hive blockchain, a token via Hive Engine. That's it! Also, if you guys want to fund your own community projects in the near future. just wait for DTF by @aggroed and his team. DTF is similar to DHF, but it is for communities. 2nd layer solutions won't be bad as well.
