Challenge - Travel at Home with Three Photos (Belize trip)

We traveled to Belize, specifically the island of San Pedro, in February 2018 as a retirement celebration. Bitcoin was booming and we had 3 miners running, making about $150 a day, so this was a BTC funded trip. Ahhh, the good old days! This photo was taken from the water taxi that brought us from the mainland Belize to the island. This was our first trip to Belize and we were very excited to be able to spend the entire month of February there. The water taxi ride wasn't quite as fun as I had anticipated. I had pictured an invigorating boat ride enjoying the sun and sea after a long day of travel. In reality, we were crammed into the hold of the ship like cattle, sitting shoulder to shoulder on hard plastic seats bolted in rows to the floor. So it was a rather long 90-minute ride but I did manage to stand in the stairwell for a few minutes and take some quick shots of our arrival.

There were plenty of beautiful waterside restaurants with fresh seafood, my new favorite fish dish became yellow-tailed snapper. But one of my favorite outings was a trail ride that we took when we took an excursion to the mainland. We rode these horses along a river, took a hand-cranked ferry across the river, and explored the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich.

We had our own personal guide for exploring the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha. He made their civilization come alive to us through his stories. We could almost see and hear the people going about their business in this small yet well-preserved site. And they've only uncovered a few of the temples, tombs, and pyramids here; hundreds more lie under the jungle foliage. Many jade, pearl, and obsidian artifacts have been discovered here, including the unique jade-head sculpture of Kinich Ahau (the Mayan sun god), the largest carved jade piece from the Mayan era.

All in all, this was definitely one of my favorite vacations, and it was very difficult to narrow it down to only three photos!

Looks like a really beautiful place!!

The Mayan structures still look impressive and talk about ancient times.

You're on a horse.

Yes, and wearing our Bitcoin shirts! Poor horse though, I weighed about 30 lbs more then than I do now. I hated to even show it, lol.
