The Eurovision Song Contest 2021 will be held on May 18 and 20 (semifinals) and May 22 (final)here in my city of Rotterdam.
We saw all the flags and banners and signs last week when I made most of the pictures here in my blog just walking around the city with the kids.
There are 39 participants. There were actually 41, but Armenia and Belarus dropped out for various reasons. Covid an fear being one of them. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is less audience than during other years. . Each country has also been asked to submit a spare live-on-tape performance. In it, the artist does his, her or their performance as planned in Rotterdam. These tapes are used when a participant becomes ill, or when a country cannot enter (this is the case with Australia).
The EBU ( The European Broadcasting Union ) laid down rules on how those tapes should be recorded, so that the conditions are the same for everyone as much as possible.
The European Broadcasting Union did not approve Belarus's entry on March 11 due to being too political. The band Galasy ZMesta (translated from the band name 'The voice of reason') has in the past clearly expressed support for dictator Lukashenka and mocked participants in the protests. The song lyrics they sang could also be read in that light. On March 26 it became clear that the replacement song was also rejected, and that the entire participation of Belarus for this year has been ended.
And Armenia withdrew. Officially because there was too little time to provide a good entry. It is unofficially suspected that the armed conflict with Azerbaijan is the basis for the decision. Very sad.
The EBU decided this year on a radical change, which may only be introduced for a year at first: the voices of the backing singers (as many as the artist wants) can be on the tape. So there is no need to bring a live singing choir anymore. This is allowed by the way.
The draw for the semifinals is completely taken over from the draw for 2020. It is therefore only determined which countries sing in which semifinal, and in which half of the show. The producers have determined a precise performance sequence from this. Incidentally, the place drawn by the Netherlands in the final was also maintained: Jeangu Macrooy will therefore be the 23rd to perform. For the record I think his song is awful but he is a great singer. His song last year was great but want allowed to enter as it already was in the media and that would not be ok.
The first semifinal will feature singer Davina Michelle and actress Thekla Reuten: they will perform on the theme of 'water'. The second semifinal starts with a performance by dancer Redo and singer Eefje de Visser. The final will be opened by sixteen-year-old DJ Pieter Gabriel. Later in the finale, Afrojack, Wulf and Glennis Grace will perform, along with young musicians. Very great line up.
Ofcourse last years winner well 2019 that is, but went on because the pandemic interferred, Duncan Laurence he will also perform a new song, but he can also be seen in the two semifinals. He has a record deal in the States now, the eurovision did him well, and also his carreer. Great to see and I wish him well.
A number of countries confirmed after canceling the 2020 edition that their artist will be the same for 2021. But some countries decided otherwise. Sweden again organized its own preliminary round, Melodifestivalen. The artists of 2020, The Mama's, did participate again, but came third. In Estonia, singer Uku Suviste was immediately offered a place in the semi-finals - which he then managed to win again. Also in Norway, Melodi Grand Prix was chosen again, the usual preliminary round. Ulrikke, the 2020 winner, was offered a direct final place, but she declined it. The group KEiiNO did participate again (with Monument) - in 2019 they received the most points from the televoters during the final in Tel Aviv, but this time they came second in the Norwegian preliminary round.
In Finland, UMK, the national final, was held again. The 2020 winner, Aksel, competed again, but he finished only fifth.
The Danish broadcaster again organized a preliminary round. The artists chosen in 2020, Ben & Tan, initially indicated that they would not participate. At the end of February it was announced that they had submitted a number, but that the Danish broadcaster had not selected them. A 'normal' preliminary round was also held in Lithuania. The winning group of 2020, The Roop, was automatically allowed to participate in the final of that selection. The group won by force majeure.
The artist from Croatia was again chosen through a preliminary round. Singer Damir Kedžo, who won in 2020, did not submit a song. In Italy, it was again decided to select a candidate via the Sanremo Festival. Diodato, who won in 2020, did not compete again. The fixed preliminary round was held in Albania. Last year's winner, Arilena Ara and the number two, superstar Elvana Gjata, were not on the list of participants. In Portugal, the preliminary round kept the same format - 2020 singer Elisa and her songwriter Marta Carvalho did not compete again. Cyprus announced that it would be looking for another artist for 2021 and would therefore not choose Sandro (2020) again. Elena Tsagrinou with El diablo is the 2021 entry.
Tom Leeb announced that he would no longer be the artist for France next year. A preliminary round was organized with new artists, in which Barbara Pravi (who also wrote the winning song for the Junior Song Contest 2020) won big. The German broadcaster again uses an internal selection process. Ben Dolic, who was chosen for 2020, does not automatically become the candidate for 2021. Although he was invited to submit a song again and initially indicated that he would do so, Dolic later reported that he had decided not to participate. Instead, the German organization chose Jendrik Sigwart and his song I don't feel hate.
So many artists, so many good songs gonna be Godunov days here. The images I took are from the musicians of Poland. They were going to rehersals and allowed us from 1,5 meter distance to take pictures.

In honour of the Eurovision fan base that is also LBGTQI and PROUD of it. It’s a delicious cake with butter cream. And the banners that are used in town are also on the cake.
