Stingless or meliponine bees are social bees that produce honey. Around 400 species have been recognized. Some species are traditionally bred for the extraction of wax, honey or pollen. Currently they are beginning to be used as crop pollinators, however, these bees are of concern as they can be sensitive to habitat alteration.
Las abejas sin aguijón o meliponinos son abejas sociales que producen miel. Alrededor de unas 400 especies han sido reconocidas. Algunas especies son criadas artesanalmente para la extracción de cera, miel o polen. Actualmente se están empezando a usar como polinizadores de cultivos, sin embargo, estas abejas son motivo de preocupación ya que pueden ser sensibles a la alteración del hábitat.
Stingless bees’ nests may be exposed or covered. They are usually manufactured in natural holes that can be found in logs, rocks or walls; other species prefer to form their nest on the ground, attached to the trunk of a tree, or in the nest of termites, ants or even wasps. All species have different ways to build their nests and forming the entrance, but they always make honeycombs for brood and other feeding reservoirs that are used to store honey and pollen.
Los nidos de abejas sin aguijón pueden encontrarse expuestos o cubiertos. Suelen ser fabricados en huecos naturales que pueden hallar en troncos, rocas o paredes; otras especies prefieren formar su nido en el suelo, adherido al tronco de un árbol, o en el nido de termitas, hormigas o hasta avispas. Todas las especies tienen distintas maneras de construir sus nidos y formar la entrada, pero siempre fabrican panales para la cría y otros depósitos de alimentación que son usados para guardar miel y polen.
