The Psychology of Dreams: Airports, Moving and Insufficient Resources

As I have mentioned a few times in the past, I keep a Dream Journal. It's something I've been doing since I went through an extended period of therapy back in the mid to late 1990s.

The psychology of dreams and what we can learn from that about ourselves, has long been of interest to me. Even though I'm almost 25 years past the time when I was assigned the task of keeping a dream Journal as therapy "homework," I still keep track of dreams of note.

Having this kind of record can be an interesting insight into ourselves because we don't just get to look at — and try to understand — individual dreams, but with enough data accumulated over a long period of time we can take the “50,000 foot overview” and start looking at some of the meta patterns that keep working their way through our subconscious.

I was looking through some old paper journals earlier today — as well as some more recent ones — and started noting a few common themes.

I seem to quite often dream in "themes" that have to do with airports. Invariably, there are complications that make me run late. Sometimes I can't find my suitcase, sometimes I have more stuff I need to pack than I have time for, sometimes I have to pack for several people, sometimes something is wrong with my car, sometimes I can't make it to the plane because they keep announcing gate changes and I'm running around always a little bit behind where I need to be.

Another common theme seems to involve moving from one place to another. Again it often feels like I'm running out of time, and I'm trying to pack everything into boxes and I keep discovering that half the stuff isn't mine but I still need to get it out of the house because it's been sold or a new tenant needs to move in or something similar.

Occasionally I have dreams similar to the airport dream except the mode of conveyance is either a train or a long haul bus.

The common threads that tend to tie all these dreams together tends to be that I have a task to perform that I feel quite capable of doing and know how to do, but I'm lacking resources and I'm lacking time. Sometimes this is combined with trying to get my own things done, only to discover that the task at hand has just been expanded exponentially by the fact that I'm also in charge of a bunch of other people's stuff.

Another common thread seems to be that these dreams very seldom end with any kind of resolution. Usually I wake up at some point where I'm starting to feel a little bit frantic, I'm ready to give up, and it is painfully obvious that I won't make it to the airport, train station, or bus Depot on time. Or, I won't have the house or apartment emptied out in time for the new owners or tenants to move in.

So do these dreams actually reflect the reality of my life? Is there anything to be learned, here?

In a fairly loose and abstract sort of way I have spent most of my life trying to do more than could possibly be expected with less than adequate resources. And yes, I have had people in my life who "piled on" because they thought I was more "capable" than they...

Mostly, though, I think the pattern is underscoring something I already know: "I really need to simplify my existence!"

Thanks for reading and have a great remainder of your week!

Very good writing. Learn a lot from it.

Thinking you more capable than others is good most of the cases. Simplicity is the best all the time that we need to focus on. Well said and wonderful photography

I never seem to have the abstract stereotypical dreams with themes. The ones I can remember are usually back when I worked in a proeper office some 25 years ago...Crazy lol.
