For this weeks Show Us Your California contest by @thesocalhive my Mom and I decided to take a day off from Skiing and go hike over to...
Mammoth Rock!
Mammoth Rock is a large outcrop made of limestone and marble that overlooks the town of Mammoth. It was a relatively short hike, but it was lots of fun! The terrain was mostly snow covered and required using micro spikes to reduce slippage. We got up to the rock and I found some fun class 3 routes up to the top! The views from the top were awesome, but I didn't hangout long because there was a cold hard wing blowing and I didn't feel like getting blown off the side of the rock! lol. After climbing down we had a quick snack break on the backside of the rock before starting back. On the way back I got to have some more fun glissading a few of the steeper snow sections! And we also hiked passed a really interesting monument marking the site of Mammoth City an old mining town from the 1870's!

Looks like a great time! Mammoth is an awesome place to hang out any time of year!
I love it up there. Fishing, hiking, camping in the summer and skiing/boarding in the winter!
I wonder do you ever take a piece of rock with you to document where you have been?
I love the trip and snow how i love some snow here
I often do just that. I have a large rock collection from my trips. We got some good early snowstorms here, but we need more. I'm hoping we get some more storms coming in... after my next camping trip that is. lol.
I know where that's at! I've been there in a lot warmer weather :) We had a long rider meet up at Arrowhead Lake and a few of us rode to Mammoth and hiked around for a few hours. There are some seriously great roads to ride up there...
My brother and I used USArmy surplus ponchos to glissade on Mt. Rainier Washington. We beat hell out of the ponchos (fortunately no rain on our trip up or down) but had more fun than should be allowed.
Thanks for another great episode of your California.
That's awesome! Lake Arrowhead is really nice too.
I bet glissading on Rainier was epic. I'd love to climb that mountain someday!
What a collection of shots and perspective.
Thanks for getting me away from my office a few moments!
Awesome post!
Thanks, it's my pleasure!

This looks quite amazing, where I live we don't have snow time. I live in the Venezuelan coast.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful pictures!
Wow! So much snow!
Are you enjoying it?
I love the snow! I'm hoping we can get a lot more this winter.
Oh my gosh, @derekrichardson, those videos! The first one put me a cold sweat because you just seemed to be on a too-narrow ridge in a high wind. And the second one is hilarious. I hope you have really thick pants!
My butt was pretty cold, lol, but it was totally worth it!
