Cuatro cuerdas que te pueden tocar el alma o hacerte bailar un joropo hasta el amanecer, cuatro cuerdas que pueden enamorar a una muchacha o que pueden retar a un hombre a un combate lírico, así es el cuatro; acompañante de primera línea del cantor venezolano y herramienta fundamental para entender el folklore de Venezuela.
Más allá de Venezuela el cuatro también se utiliza en expresiones musicales típicas de Colombia, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana y Cuba; pudiendo variar su forma de un país a otro. En las fotos tenemos una exhibición de Cuartos venezolanos, que como puede apreciarse son muy parecidos a las guitarras, diferenciándose a simple vista por tener cuatro cuerdas en vez de seis y su tamaño ser más pequeño.
El cuatro comparte origen con la guitarra y otros instrumentos de cuerda similares, cuya historia quizás comienza hace más de cuatro mil años en la antigua Mesopotamia; lugar de donde se piensa es originario el Oud o Laúd Árabe, el cual llega a Europa en el Siglo VII y se popularizó en el viejo continente para el Siglo XI, de este instrumento se originan el Cuatro, la Guitarra y otros instrumentos aguitarrados como el Ukelele o el Charango.

Four strings that can touch your soul or make you dance a joropo until dawn, four strings that can make a girl fall in love or that can challenge a man to a lyrical combat, this is the Cuatro (Four); First line accompanist of the Venezuelan singer and fundamental tool to understand the folklore of Venezuela.
Beyond Venezuela the cuatro is also used in typical musical expressions of Colombia, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba; its shape may vary from one country to another. In the photos we have an exhibition of Venezuelan rooms, which as can be seen are very similar to guitars, differing with the naked eye for having four strings instead of six and their size being smaller.
The cuatro shares its origin with the guitar and other similar stringed instruments, whose history perhaps begins more than four thousand years ago in ancient Mesopotamia; place where it is thought that the Oud or Arab Lute originates, which arrived in Europe in the 7th century and became popular in the old continent for the 11th century, from this instrument the Cuatro, the Guitar and others instruments such as the Ukulele or the Charango are originated.
