Bare shelves again for #marketfriday

Earlier this year in late March when the whole COVID mess was ramping-up in my area of the world, this is how the shelves in the stores looked: bare. The sections became empty where toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, cleaning supplies, dish soap, hand soap, etc. were stocked. As soon as a case or two was restocked on the shelves, everything sold out within minutes. I imagine the same was seen in other locations for most folks reading this. It was several months before things returned to normal and the shelves remained almost fully-stocked again on a regular basis.

This week, however, I encountered many bare shelves again. 😱

There was only one case of toilet paper on the shelf. There weren't many paper towels, either. There were only a few bottles of bleach, and the dish soap was heavily picked-over.

The only explanation I can fathom is the upcoming holidays. In some parts of the world, the Thanksgiving holiday is being celebrated this week. In the coming month, the Christians & Jewish religions will be celebrating their big holidays, and then there's New Years' Eve. So, apparently, many people in this area plan to gather with family and friends, which means there will likely be another spike in COVID cases and all that comes with it — further lockdowns, further unrest, further shortages... It's like a vicious cycle. 😕

So, again, we deal with shortages. As I've said before, if everyone would buy these items in reasonable quantities as they have in years past, there would be enough for everyone. 🤦‍♀

Hopefully, though, this is a short-lived phenomenon with no lasting repercussions. Has anyone else noticed similar shortages of items in your area recently after the recovery of the supply-chain earlier this year?

 😊

Oh, this is interesting. I have to check shelves of our supermarkets too. We have a total lockdown on weekends so far, everything is closed except farmathies and supermarkets, so anyway I've nothing to do.

Hope this craziness will end soon. I've heard on news today, that they plan to start vaccination in December in USA, I was greatly surprised.

One thing our government did promise was there would be no shortages, and so far there have not been any whatsoever in our region. However prices were being watched by consumer watch earlier in the year, prices remained constant during first phase of lock-down, over the last three months I have noted an escalation which is actually ridiculously high.

Perhaps in anticipation of holiday season prices are steadily increased to make up for the months and months of lock-down, greed knows no barriers.

I know, huh. I think it's because CV is on the rampage in the US and people are afraid, really afraid again.

I'm not sure how buying 100 rolls of paper products helps ease that fear. Did they use the 96 roll pack of TP already since March?

You are correct. This is the new ordinary at my market too. I am baffled by the whole deal, but I am easily confused.

This whole thing surprised me the first time. I caught myself thinking that if everyone just bought normally, there would be no shorted as we all bought normally before and we never ran out here.

I never intended to hoard, but when I could no longer find any of these things locally, I resorted to Amazon. I pretended it was a game, making a toilet paper "list" there so I could watch specific items, checking them frequently and ordering immediately when the "buy now" link lit up. Once it was lit, it was sold out in minutes ! I found it was available more in the late night hours. I got good at it and eventually would order some also for my mother and sister..... paper towels too !

I hadn't bought any at the store in 6 months at least ! Several weeks back when the warnings started coming out, I ordered another case or two now while it is always available on Amazon and a case of paper towels, in case the availability changes soon online as well.

What a pain... right ?? 😄

All of the best with the shortages, we are lucky and don't have any shortages at the moment, although we are also seeing a spike in Covid cases!!

No matter what the government or supermarkets says, people still stock pile, its unbelievable. Honestly, how much more toilet paper does one use during lockdown 🤔

Thanks for continuing to make Hive awesome.
