OLD BARN № 074

Sometimes, barns are difficult to spot as one is driving down the road, and this one is a perfect example. Beside the landowner's house is an area where a garden might once have been located. Way back behind that space is a wooded area, and this barn is located there, about 150 feet (46 meters) from the road. Since the barn isn't painted, the weathered wood blends rather well with the trees, so the barn doesn't really stand out.

It's also difficult to see many details of this structure. Trees have grown beside the barn on one side, and weeds appear to be overtaking it on the other. Also, it was built in spot that is lower than the road and the former garden-area in front of it, so it is partly obscured by the landscape.

It does have a hay door on the upper level, so hay must have been stored inside at one time. It is also a rather large building, so much activity must have taken place at the height of its use. That is about all an observer can tell from a distance with any certainty, though. There might be an opening on the left-side where livestock might have entered the barn, with a gate across it — or is that a spot where the barn is falling apart? I can't tell. It appears to be mostly abandoned now, though, unless the owner still uses it for storage space. The property does not appear to be supporting any livestock at present.

This barn is also located nearby many of the other recently-featured barns in my blog, a little to the right of center in the following aerial photograph. White dots mark the locations of soon-to-be-featured barns!

And again, for the purists who prefer my original shots to the artistic processing, here is a view of the barn, sans editing.

One of the reasons I process the photos can be seen by comparing the original shot with my edited version. Due to the position of the sun in this photo, the end of the barn nearest to us is shaded and dark. Also the sun is washing-out the entire scene to a certain degree, destroying the contrast. Part of my editing process corrects somewhat for contrast and overexposure. Of course, the most perfect lighting conditions would have been to make the photograph on an overcast day so that light is more evenly distributed. That isn't always possible in real-life, though!

Nice shots. I usually edit my shots, too, but don't do any drastic changes. I simply correct the colours and contrast a little bit so that they don't look too faded. 😉

It's incredible that you're up to barn number 74! This one is a great little find, too.

Looks like a good hideout for some crafty raccoons 😜
