OLD BARN № 086

This barn is quite simple and rustic looking, but I think it packs a lot of charm in the process. Even in its state of disrepair — and looks like it is leaning a bit, too — it is still cute!

OLD BARN № 086 was built with clapboard construction, as many of other barns were made. With the missing boards in this one, however, the clapboard construction is slightly easier to see than with barns in perfect condition. Each board slightly overlaps the board beneath it, allowing rain to drain easier from the siding. Look at the image to the right, then look carefully at the barn and you can see the overlap. If you're viewing this article with the https://peakd.com front-end to the Hive blockchain, you should be able to click the photo of the barn and zoom-in for a closer view, but the default https://hive.blog front-end does not offer that option.

Old houses, churches, and schools were also made with clapboard construction long ago. Modern synthetic siding is usually placed on buildings today in a similar manner, overlapping the pieces beneath them.

Of course, clapboard only helps to protect from rain while mitigating against wind damage as well. Barns are still in danger from termites, carpenter ants, and other pests unless they're built with cedar or redwood, so coating the wood with linseed oil and paint is still a good idea.

This barn is simple in layout, as there are only two parts (at least that we can see). First, there is the main part of the barn which is probably just used to store farming implements, as the doorway isn't wide-enough for most livestock to pass through. Then there is the cantilevered overhang to the left — which I never know what to call, perhaps @bigtom13 will have an official name for it. I have seen that overhang on barns used for two things: (1) storing equipment to keep it dry during rainy weather, and (2) with fencing around it to serve as a pen for goats or sheep.

Barn 086 was mentioned in the write-up about the last barn, and might even be on the same property. It's near OLD BARN № 085, just past the little grove of trees that I have marked as a "tree farm" and on the same side of the road. Property lines are not always clear, and this barn might even be owned by the large house on the other side of the roadway.

The following aerial view shows where the barn is located in relationship to other barns I have featured:

Lastly, here is my original shot without processing, which is also capable of being enlarged by those using the https://peakd.com front-end for Hive:

Isn't this a delightful little barn? It was also great to find it right beside the road rather than far away, so I could see it better!

I'd call it a side shed. In my world they were generally completely closed (it's where the animals were cared for) but some were open and some, like this, partial. Our barn had a chicken coop, our milking parlor and a 2 horse stall in one side shed and horse stalls in the other shed for the draft horses and affiliated tack.

Our barn used tongue and groove siding but our house was clapboard. It was effective enough as a siding.

Another beautiful barn. Still all there but aged enough to be really impressive.

Great shot, @thekittygirl! It really jumped out at me while I was scrolling my feed - it looks like it has many cool stories to share. I'm getting a wicked Little House vibe from it as well - nicely done!

Thanks for continuing to make Hive awesome.
