FAMILY TRADITIONS
Table games

- - - - -

Today I want to talk to you not only about a tradition that my family has, but also about a tradition that the Dominicans have had since the Spanish colonized the island (we are talking about the 1500s), and we have adopted it as ours and as part of our recreation: playing board games. Although you may not believe it, board games are a very important part of Dominican coexistence, they play them in schools, at parties, in the streets, on Sundays in the park and everywhere we can sit down in a table and hang out.

There is an extensive list of board games that are played, but I am going to make a list for you and I will explain in detail the most important one and I will tell you why later.

  1. Domino
  2. Parchis
  3. Chinese checkers
  4. Bingo
  5. Uno
  6. Chess
  7. Rummy
  8. Monopoly
  9. Checkers
  10. Clue

TRADICIONES FAMILIARES
Juegos de mesa

- - - - -

  1. Dominó
  2. Parchés
  3. Damas chinas
  4. Bingo
  5. Uno
  6. Ajedrez
  7. Rummy
  8. Monopolio
  9. Damas
  10. Clue

How to play?

The Dominoes game consists on being the first to run out of chips, simple ... on a square table, it is played by 4 people, normally facing each other (in a team with the one who sits in front of you) or of 2 people. When playing 4, all the chips are distributed (there are 28 in total, each player having 7) and if there are 2 people each takes 7 chips, and when they do not have any chips to place, they take one of the leftovers on the table.

The idea is to place chip by chip following the one on the table for example: if you have a 4/8 the next thing you should do is place a chip that has a 4 or an 8 on the corresponding side ( As you could see in the next photo ).

When playing with 4 people and facing each other, it is more interesting, since you have to count the number of chips that are left on the table, which ones your opponents have, which ones your facing partner has and which chip you should put to block the opponents or which one suits your partner head on to win. Now the game got complicated, right? It really is a bit complicated but you just have to add up the chips and as there are only 28 chips, there are 7 of each number and the numbers go from 0 to 6 you can discard.

But now, What makes this game so special? Simple, the little details that the Dominican adds ... In addition to the tension of the game itself, you can't miss a good cold beer in your hand; a bachata at full volume in the background ( or depending on the social group in which it is played it can change ); Another detail that cannot be missed is that when they place the chips on the table, they do not place them, no, they hit them with the table! if it doesn't sound, it's like you didn't play; Also when you don't have chips to put in, you don't say "I'm not going," you hit the table with your fist.

Ahh! and the conversations to distract the participants, very creative; worth noting that we play so well that just lefting 4 turns to finish, the winner of the round already knows who is going to play and who is not going; Not to mention the celebration at the end of the game, unique and full of joy as our beautiful country is.

I leave you a short video of a ending of a domino game so that you understand a little better what I am talking about:

Hopefully my introduction to dominoes has encouraged you to practice it. I love to play it with friends! And when I don't have them around, I play it on a cell phone application.

Until next time, thanks for reading!

I'm still excited for the award, I couldn't believe it ... thank you so much !! keep giving good vibes as you are doing so far.

See you on Thursday, I love your show.

Oh, what lovely memories your post has brought back!
Board games is something we still play when we go on holiday with friends and family, I must get a Domino set again after reading your post! We play Uno and Rummikub with the latter being my absolute favourite, not sure if you're familiar with it, but it consists of numbered & coloured tiles; kind of a mix of a domino and a card game, it's great fun and will keep the brain ticking over as you start discovering new tricks;)
Thank you for this lovely post and bringing back good memories and a big congratulations on your well deserved prize in @sultnpapper's contest!

I have not heard of the Rummikub, but I will totaly look it up, thank you for your support! More than the award, I really appreciate all the good comments, it has filled me with happiness to know that I have touched the memories of those who read the post! Totally worth it.
