Debes empezar a hacer otras cosas Fermín.

—No dices nada. No me sorprende. Tu simple aroma me repugna.

THE FLAME

A warm and foggy morning. The noise of the coffee machine released its whistle announcing that the water contained was at its point. Jasmine, the lady of the house, who was the wife of Fermín, a writer frustrated by his letters repelled by his dissidents, answered his call. Last night they could not consummate the dream, again the nightmares attacked in the form of whispers. This time, they became more intense, as if they were really looking for help.

Everything was ready, they sat down at the table to taste the coffee. Jasmine watched Fermin again with indifference, insulting him with her mind and imagining her life without him. The writer had not yet taken the first sip. He watched the coffee as if it were the source of an oracle. A small chestnut lake in which he wanted to reflect and see his look of sadness, to find even a hint of a lie.

In spite of what they suffered the night before, they did not talk about it, they seemed to assimilate it as something common; strange in itself, but very disturbing. Jasmine, before the silence, gave the first word, informing her husband about something important.

-Yesterday afternoon Stephen called and said he wanted to communicate with you urgently. -Jasmine said smugly. Then she stared at her husband, with a withering glare.

Fermin just watched her with a cold face as he caressed the mouth of the coffee cup with the index fingers of his hands. She could not stand the prevailing hypocrisy and mused with serene rage what was carefully contained in her lips.

-Why do you never want to speak to me in truth? Why am I always the one who has to light the flame? -After these words he remained inert, waiting for a vivid reaction.

Jasmine sighed and glanced to the side, then settled down in her chair, laying the whole dimension of her back. She tried to restrain herself with all her strength. She prayed that the flame would not burn. He took a sip of coffee, to try to hold back his displeasure, but he knew very well that in that house of hidden truths it was impossible to escape from reality, so he had to face it severely.

-Do you really want to know? -said Jasmine, almost muttering. -Very good... You always like to hear me talk about it, because my words hurt you and you seem to like that. You are a hopeless masochist. An offspring of decadence. Yes, I'm upset, and I'd like to go back to the day we met to reject your next invitation and never have to see you again.

-Why don't you ever talk to me then? -Why don't you ever tell me that you are in pain?

-I don't know... maybe it's a habit. We have been together for several years and I am a conformist idiot. -He ended up talking with another sip of coffee at the end.

Fermin hadn't even taken the first sip yet. He continued to see Jasmine indifferent and keeping the flame burning. He wanted to try another move, but this time, to stimulate a more chaotic and accurate reaction.

-And Esteban is better in bed than I am? -Fermin said in a serious tone, looking down instantly.

Jasmine gets upset by abruptly removing the cup of coffee on the table and getting up suddenly.

-Really? Is that what you're getting at? Well! It's been a while since I felt wanted in bed. That my inhibitions were completely dissipated and that my orgasms were flashing over the hooves of my temples. You know I'm very disappointed in you, who think you're the best writer when you haven't brought in any money for weeks with your poems and novels. Understand that your moment has passed. You must start doing other things, Fermin. Lyrics are just a hobby for you, not a way to live.

Fermín didn't flinch at all, it seemed that he had created a shield that protected him or that he was already waiting for his wife's cruel words.

-You don't say anything. I am not surprised. -Said Jasmine, still upset. -Do you know why we can't have children? We are incompatible to conceive. The studies came to me a few days ago but I kept them from you, since you were depressed by the zero sale of your books. Do you remember your favorite blue sweater that I hated so much? I cut it up and then I wore it to clean the bathroom, then I threw it away. And you know what else? I'm going to leave you. I'm going to go to my father's house for a while and then find another place to live. I can't even look at you anymore. Your mere smell disgusts me. It's better that way, I can't keep so many truths a secret.

When Jasmine was about to leave, just as she passed by Fermin, he stood up and took her by the arm and then embraced her. She let out a sigh, with all the impulse of her lungs. She looked at him. She knew he was thanking her. She simply placed her hand on his back and said:

-Goodbye Fermin, I wish you a full life, without me... -And then she walked out the kitchen door, finally extinguishing the flame.

If it didn't end badly, it wouldn't end.

I've had that scenario more than once. You've done a wonderful job of capturing the emotions and feelings of it.

Thank you!

Thank you. The truth is for me a real challenge to be able to capture those emotions in writing. Feeling like I'm in the shoes of my characters or as a spectator is great.

Thank you for valuing my work. Cheers!

The flame is gone!!! AH!

Great story!

Point of no return, great write thoroughly enjoyed, well the ending is the ending is it not @universeoperdido

Thank you very much!

Excellent tale. I love Fermin's stillness. By being still, he takes command and his dreams come true. I love that. This is a story full of thoughts for me. Thank you.

Thank you. That's right, I wanted to develop a serene character against a chaotic one. Cheers!

Brilliant write! There's no coming back from that!!
