Bayside Walks & sights on the Cape Peninsula (South Africa): Fishoek to Simons Town

in The LIFESTYLE LOUNGE3 years ago (edited)

Along with the rest of the world we have been under a moderate lockdown since March 2020. But over the Christmas Holidays, which happens to be our Summer high season, our beaches were suddenly closed.

Now you have to understand, we are a family who LOVE THE BEACH and we live in a small Surfside town with very little else to do locally other than hangout - let’s just say there has been minimal hanging out in the current pandemic.

With that in mind we had to find an alternative way to enjoy the outdoors and still keep an eye on the ocean which lead us to our beautiful coastal walks.

ON THE ROAD TO SIMON’S TOWN

On this particular walk we started at Fishoek Beach and ended at Boulders Beach (Our famous Penguin Colony).

Instead of our soft white sandy beach we had to make the pavement our friend and made good time from Fishoek to Glencairn. There we stopped at the Simon’s Town viewing station for a quick pic and then continued our journey.

The tidal pools looked so tempting and inviting, but we contained out enthusiasm and kept walking as the sun rose higher.

The persistence paid off as we walked into historic Simon’s Town. The old buildings are gorgeous and beautifully restored. It feels like we often drive through this town and miss the history and beauty, but a walking tour gave us time to lift our eyes and take it all in.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS

Simon’s town is the host of Cape Town’s Naval Base, gorgeous restaurants and South Africas largest penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Unfortunately the Simon’s Town Museum and the Toy Museum were closed, but there is so much more to see.

If you ever visit the are you should definitely make a stop at Seaforth Restaurant for Sundowners and Tapas. And just a short walk later (although our feet were dead by now) is Boulders beach and home of our amazing Penguin Colony.

For a small fee you can walk along the boardwalks into the penguin colony and observe their feeding and breeding up close, or take a swim at Boulders beach amongst the penguins. It’s a must for all visitors. At the moment, the boardwalks are open, but the beach itself is closed due to the aforementioned regulations.

Lucky for us my folks were planning to join us for coffee so we piled into their station wagon after a meal and got a ride back to the start in Fishoek.

It’s amazing how you can live in a city your whole life and miss some of the gorgeous spots not too far away. My new normal is exploring what’s local because as we say in South Africa, “Local is lekker!”

Thank you! I think I’m slowly getting the hang of this blogging thing.

You are welcome @zo3d! It is great to see you are doing your first steps! Great work!

We are allowed to exercise and that's it. Walking around may not be conceived as that and the cops may intervene. They are like that here.

Our public streets, malls and restaurants etc are all open as usual but our beaches are closed. It’s a bit of an odd restriction as now pavements are busier than ever and more congested. We also have many townships and folk using public taxi busses that are allowed 100% capacity with little to no sanitising. If folk could at least walk on the beach it would increase the amount of space we all got to share. We also have so many people in townships living below the breadline that a full lockdown cannot be enforced as the government is broke and can’t give grants and subsidies... stuck between a rock and a hard place. People have to be able to make a living. But praying the government can at least sort out a vaccination program real soon. South Africa is not at the front of the cue like the US and UK unfortunately. Pray for your African brothers and sister on this side of the world...

Hmm, we are in full lockdown here. Do they think walking on the beach spreads the virus more? Sitting on it could be banned.., common sense.

Exactly my thoughts...

Loveeeee it :) Sunshine, penguins and a sharky...keep the cottage free for me lol. I have the full contrast here. Snow. But I found a beautiful spot in my area I will share tomorrow. It is not as spectacular as having penguins around but during lockdown I appreciate even new trees lol.

Ha ha ha! We could do a house swap😂
