If I planted my broccoli only 12" apart, it would be an impenetrable hedge... I use 3' spacing so i can work around it.

My individual rows are usually rather impenetrable. We've always planted fairly thick, to take advantage of our small space. I'm spreading things out a little this year just to see if it cuts down on maintenance time... growing things so close together requires a lot of extra pruning. If I planted my broccoli 3' apart, 9 of them would take up about 1/4 of this garden!
