How to grow yam tubers effectively 1

HELLO HIVE

Growing up as a young farmer under my parents who have virtually spent most of their lives as farmers has taught me how beautiful and important agriculture is to us and how its always involved in our daily life.

Some people may not be directly involved on the farm but they are involved when it comes to transporting, processing and packing the by products of this farm produce for the population at large.

Growing yam is like a family culture to my dad and since it is his favorite food he always finds even the smallest piece of land to plant yam for that year. With the sustained demand for agriculture products we would also end up selling a small portion of what we get from this piece of yam farm.

importance of yam in my diet

Yam is a special kind of crop to me solely because of how much and how in use this tuber to make different kinds of dish according to how I feel like eating this. I can prepare yam porridge, pounded yam that is my favorite of the them or I can even have this sweet yam flavor consumed as boiled yam in slizes and enjoy it with stew.

Finding the best place to cultivate yam

like maize and rice the choice of planting environment for tuber is very important whether it is the land you are planting on or it is the surrounding lands since its always easy and exposed to animals like rodents who make holes in to the soil to eat this tuber.

Yam been a class of root and tuber crop and with Nigeria been by farm the worlds largest producer of yam tubers is the reason why you would come across yam farms in most regions in Nigeria.

A rich and fertile sandy, draining soil would be a good planting soil and the land should not be at a water log area since any exposure of this tubers that are under the ground to constant flowing water would eventually make the tubers get rotten and spoilt. There should not be a place in the surrounding area where there is tick graces, lots of trees, bushes or even places closer to the forest since this are good hideouts for rodents like rats that who could do a damage as large as reducing your harvest by half.

The way we grow yam around my place is that you would have to make make a form of ridge or heap or even a mound 3ft and 3 inch in heights and two stakes of each 2 meters in heights are used to stake the plants to spread and vine on it and this stakes are made so that they are adjacent to each other.

White yams are the best recommended species for land in Nigeria.
I would make post on other parts of this in my subsequent post.
