IMHO: the best platform for promoting HIVE is with individual web sites and independent blogs.
After google search, social media is the no.1 to drive more traffic. most of the peoples are active there. You just have to target proper audience.
Things depend on time frame. I had 10k followers when I used twitter. When I started Twitter, I would get an average of a dozen hits each time I dropped a link. The max was something like 30 hits on a compelling tweet that received numerous retweets.
Putting links on web sites rarely turned into hits in the next day. However, I usually would get 30 or so hits over a year for the links that I tracked.
You mentioned that Google is a determining factor. Google's PR system still gives more weight to well placed links on web sites than it gives to links spewed forth on social media sites.
So, having an independent web site pointing to HIVE will do a better job promoting HIVE than activity on other social media sites.
IMHO, the best way to handle one's social media presence is to have an independent site. One should link to that site. Then one can promote whatever they want from the independent site.
For example, A year ago I was placing links to a site called SteemIt.com . I became disenchanted with SteemIt.com. Because I have complete control over my personal site, I was easily able to update the links from SteemIt.com to Hive.blog.
Promoting hive on own blog/website is good idea but SEO is the key here. If you not apply on page and off page optimization then you will not get better result in your personal blog and other than that there are more things too. And social media traffic is depended on relevancy (for example , If you are sharing food subect post in technology subject group then it is not get result. And proper tags can attract relevant audience). And everyone don't know about SEO that's why i am recommend social media promoting for everyone because even beginner can do it. But if people can create own blog and promote hive on their personal blog/website then it will achieve better result than social media.
