Hi guys. I wrote on my previous posts that there are many ancient cities in the area where I live. Phaselis is one of them and it is a place that I love very much and has a special place in my life. While working as a travel guide, I lived in various hotels in Kemer for two summers. Although living in hotels is very enjoyable to escape from the routine at first, it can become boring after a while. At least that's how it was for me. And in such cases, Phaselis was an escape to nature for me. I have so many memories of this place. My family and friends who I brought also loved this place. Because there is something for everyone here. Phaselis embraces its visitors and takes them to a completely different world with its lush nature and historical ruins surrounding the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean.
Merhaba arkadaşlar. Oturduğum bölgede çok fazla antik kent olduğunu yazmıştım. Phaselis de onlardan biri ve çok sevdiğim ve hayatımda özel bir yeri olan bir yer. Rehber olarak çalışırken iki yaz Kemer'de çeşitli otellerde yaşamıştım. Otellerde yaşamak ilk başta rutinden kaçmak adına çok zevkli olsa da bir süre sonra sıkıcı hale gelebiliyor. En azından benim için böyleydi. Ve bu gibi durumlarda Phaselis benim için bir doğaya kaçış noktasıydı. Burasıyla ilgili çok fazla anım var. Ailem ve arkadaşlarımdan da kimi getirdiysem çok sevdiler. I've been wanting to visit Phaselis for a while. When I heard that fires were reported at 3 different points in Kemer the previous day, I was deeply saddened and realized once again how much I missed this place. I don't know how I set out yesterday morning either. The ancient city of Phaselis is located approximately 60 km from the center of Antalya. It is in a region between Camyuva and Tekirova. These are all the towns of Antalya's Kemer district. If I speak in the ancient language, I left Pamphylia and went to Lycia. There is a lot of discussion about this though. While some historians included Phaselis in Pamphylia, some accepted it as a Lycian city. The main reason for this is its location. Phaselis is located right on the border of these two ancient unions. However, since it was one of the last cities to be included in the Lycian union, those who included it in Lycia are in the majority. If you ask me, the people of Phaselis did not resemble the Lycians at all in terms of character. I will explain why, but first, there is a very interesting legend about the foundation of Phaselis, which I would like to share with you.
Bir süredir gidip görmeyi çok istiyordum. Önceki gün Kemer'de 3 ayrı noktada yangın rapor edildiğini duyduğumda iyice üzüldüm ve Phaselis'i ne kadar özlediğimi bir kez daha anladım. Phaselis - A City Sold for Dried Fish
There is a very interesting founding legend of this ancient city. Historical sources say that this place was founded by Rhodesian colonists about 2800 years ago. According to the legend, when the Rhodesians reached here, there was a local people here who were shepherds. (which actually means that the city's history goes back much further) The knights of Rhodes offered the shepherds to sell their lands to them. In return, they stated that they wanted to pay corn or dried fish. (In some legends, barley replaces corn.) Since the natives of Phaselis had never seen dried fish before in their lives, they found this offer attractive and sold the city for fish. However, dried fish was considered the cheapest food at that time. This means that shepherds have little to do with the sea. I can imagine how happy the Rhodians were.
Phaselis - Kurutulmuş Balık Karşılığı Satılan Şehir
Çok da ilginç kuruluş efsanesi var bu antik kentin. Tarihi kaynaklar buranın yaklaşık 2800 yıl önce Rodoslu kolonistler tarafından kurulduğunu söylüyor. The people of Phaselis are a merchant people. The location of the city is also very convenient for maritime trade. In other words, as you can see, the people are trying to survive with trade. Afterwards, the region passed into the hands of the Persians. You may have seen in the movies, the Persians were very strong and cruel, they had many soldiers and weapons. For example, the movie "300 Spartans" comes to mind. The Spartans were one of the heroic peoples who resisted the Persians. If I talk about the heroic peoples of this region, the first people that come to my mind are the Xanthosians. When they realized that they could not resist the Persians, they filled all their women, children and old people in the amphitheater and burned them. Because they knew that if they were captured, they would be turned into slaves. They themselves jumped on the Persians and died. It's a sad story. Today, the ancient city of Xanthos is also located within the borders of Antalya.

Perslere karşı koyamayacaklarını anladıklarında tüm kadınlarını, çocuklarını, yaşlılarını amfitiyatroya doldurup yakıyorlar. Çünkü ele geçtiklerinde kölelere çevrileceklerini biliyorlar. Kendileriyse Perslerin üzerine atlayıp ölüyorlar. Acıklı bir hikaye. Bugün Xanthos antik kenti de Antalya sınırları içerisinde yer alıyor.
Phaselis - The City That Alexander the Great Admired
After the Persians captured Phaselis, they subjected the people to heavy taxes. While the people of Phaselis were in search of salvation, they got the news that Alexander the Great was on his way to the region. They immediately made a golden crown and sent it to Alexander, who was near Milyas, with ambassadors. In other words, they opened the gates of the city to Alexander until the end. The people, fed up with the invasion of the Persians, found the solution to open their doors to this fearless leader. When Alexander the Great came to the city, he liked this place very much and spent a winter here. The people of Phaselis also took a deep breath and experienced a temporary period of prosperity.
Phaselis - Büyük iskender'in Hayran Kaldığı Kent
Persler Phaselis'i ele geçirdikten sonra halkı ağır vergilere tabi tutuyorlar. Phaselisliler bir kurtuluş arayışındayken tam o sırada büyük İskender'in bölgeye doğru ilerlediğinin haberini alırlar. Hemen bir altın taç yaparlar ve elçilerle Milyas yakınlarında olan İskender'e gönderirler. Yani şehrin kapıları İskender'e sonuna kadar açılır. Perslerin işgalinden bıkmış olan halk çareyi bu korkusuz lidere sığınmakta bulur. Büyük İskender şehre geldiğinde burayı çok sever ve bir kışı burada geçirir. Phaselisliler de derin nefes alır ve geçici olarak bir refah dönemine girerler.
I mentioned above that I could not compare the people of this city to the Lycians. We can see this difference very clearly in the case of Termessos. Alexander the Great fought a war for 6 months to capture Termessos, one of the cities in the region. In the end, the resistance of the people won. Termessos was a beautiful city built on high mountains. Its people made a living from olive oil. When Alexander could not take the city, he got very angry and cut down all the olive trees around the city. Termessos is also within the borders of Antalya and has written its name in history as "the city that Alexander the Great could not capture". (Yes, you guessed it right, I loved the Lycians more. Who doesn't love heroes 🙂 )
Yukarıda bu kentin halkını Likya'lılara benzetemediğimi anlatmıştım. Bu farkı Termessos olayında da çok net görebiliyoruz. Büyük İskender bölgedeki kentlerden Termessos'u almak için tam 6 ay uğraşır. Sonunda halkın direnişi kazanır. Yüksek dağların üzerine kurulu güzel bir kentti Termessos. Halkı geçimini zeytin yağı ile sağlıyordu. İskender kenti alamayınca çok sinirlenir ve kentin çevresindeki tüm zeytin ağaçlarını kestirir. Termessos da yine Antalya sınırları içerisinde ve "Büyük iskenderin ele geçiremediği şehir" olarak tarihe adını yazdırmıştır. (Evet doğru tahmin ettiniz Likyalıları daha çok sevdim. Kahramanları kim sevmez 🙂 )
In other words, unlike the warrior Lycian people, the people living in Phaselis did not have much to do with the wars. That's why they always tried to compromise and seek prosperity. After Alexander's death, they are unfortunately dragged into chaos again. Later, the city joined the Lycian union and was important for a short time as one of the sea harbours of the land of light.

Hadrian - A Roman Emperor Who Had an Important Place in the History of Phaselis
In my old town post, I briefly talked about the emperor Hadrian and his trip to Antalya. Adrian also visited Phaselis after that trip. Here he was enthusiastically received by the locals and a gate was built in his honor. Just like the three gates in Antaya. Unfortunately, this door has not reached the present day in good condition. There doesn't seem to be much left of the door.

The structures that have survived from the ancient civilizations that lived in Phaselis today mostly belong to the Roman and Byzantine periods. Earthquakes, fires, storms, tornadoes and other natural disasters have occurred many times here, and the structures of the city have been severely damaged by these. Excavation and research work in the region continues at full speed. I hope that in the coming years, the remains of much older civilizations will be unearthed. Today, Phaselis has 3 harbours, 3 agora, necropolis, acropolis, baths, ancient theatre, aqueducts and other historical ruins. Temple - Will The Legendary Spear Be Found?
At the entrance to Phaselis, I come across this temple wall. Excavations around it continue in a feverish manner. Did they find the spear of Achilles (Achilleus)? I find it hard not to ask them. 😀
The main goddess of the city of Phaselis was Athena, and according to rumors, Achilles' spear is located inside this temple. As an Achilles fan, it's also a matter of great curiosity for me.

Phaselis kentinin baş tanrıçası Athena'ydı ve söylentilere göre bu tapınağın içinde Aşil'in mızrağı yer alıyor. Bir Aşil hayranı olarak benim için de büyük bir merak konusu.
Necropolis - City of the Dead of Phaselis
After passing the ruins of the temple, I continue on my way and first reach the Necropolis. The cemetery is located by the sea. It is possible to come across some of the sarcophagi and their lids in the sea.

I come across a lion head figure in some sarcophagi. This is generally considered a sign that the tomb belongs to someone of high rank.

If a list of cemeteries with the most beautiful views were made, this necropolis would undoubtedly enter that list from the top. The view is awesome.

Unfortunately, I came across many uprooted, bent and dried trees. While I was asking and investigating what these are, I learned that there was a very strong tornado here in 2019. I didn't know because I was out of the country at the time.

North Harbour - My Favorite Harbour of Phaselis
The northern harbour is located right next to and below the necropolis. I mentioned earlier that there are 3 harbours in Phaselis. One of them is the North harbour. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful harbour. The first is a very mysterious harbour. At every step, you can come across hidden caves, ruins on the rocks and in the water. Another reason is that the beach is pebble and I like pebble beaches more. Overall, this is my favorite beach. 🙂
Kuzey Limanı - En Sevdiğim Phaselis Limanı
Kuzey limanı nekropolün hemen yanında ve aaşağısında yer alıyor. Daha önce Phaselis'te 3 tane liman olduğundan bahsetmiştim. Bunlardan biri Kuzey limanı. Bana göre en güzel liman burası. Birincisi çok gizemli bir liman. Her adımda karşınıza gizli mağaralar, kayalıklarda ve suyun içinde kalıntılar karşınıza çıkabilir. Bir diğer nedeni sahilinin çakıl olması ve ben çakıl plajları daha çok seviyorum. Kısaca benim favori plajım burası 🙂
I would not recommend bringing children or the elderly here. As you can see the beach consists of large stones and pebbles. Stones can hurt their feet. Or they'll need a water shoe. There are other kid-friendly harbours in Phaselis. We'll go to there a little later.

I went a little further and reached my secret spot in the North harbor. If you lose me in Phaselis, you can find me here 😀 This is a deserted place surrounded by rocks on both sides. The trees above act as natural umbrellas. I took a break for some swimming and picnic here. Of course, barbecues are prohibited. We can eat the food we bring with us.

I think 40-45 minutes break is enough. I really marvel at people who lie on the beach all day. I usually get bored after half an hour. I left my favorite port. Next are the aqueducts.

Aqueducts of Phaselis
The people of Phaselis used to meet their water needs through cisterns at first. Afterwards, these aqueducts were built and the waters coming from the mountains were started to be delivered to the city with these aqueducts. Today, these aqueducts are in the best condition among the ruins of the old city.
Phaselis'in Su Kemerleri
Phaselis halkı ilk zamanlada su ihtiyaçlarını sarnıçlar aracılığıyla sağlıyorlarmış. Sonrasında bu su kemerleri inşa ediliyor ve dağlardan gelen sular bu kemerlerle kente ulaştırılmaya başlanıyor. Günümüzde eski kentin kalıntılarından en iyi durumda olanlar da bu su kemerleri.
I came across the ruins of ancient workshops right next to the aqueducts. It is known that rose oil was produced and perfume was made here. Many sources related to the past of the city include the information that the local people exported rose oil, olive oil and cedar.

When I saw the aqueducts, I was very thirsty 🙂 I went to the cafe at the back. This is a very small cafe-market. Generally, drinks are sold. Unfortunately there is no tea in the glass cup. I had to settle for mineral water. On the way back, I thought I could stop by and have coffee, so I bought mineral water and water and left here. The banana trees next to the cafe attract a lot of attention from tourists and there are people waiting in line to take pictures.

Cafenin yanındaki muz ağaçları turistler tarafından yoğun ilgi görüyor ve burada fotoğraf çektirmek için sıra bekleyenler var.
Speaking of plants, the picture of this plant on the side plate attracts my attention. The name of this endemic plant is Phaselis vetch. It has been known to grow in this region since ancient times. There is a picture of the plant on the Phaselis coins. Unfortunately I couldn't find it. Maybe I can come across it if I come in May.

Middle Harbour (Military Harbour)
I made my way to the middle harbour. This place was used as a military harbour in the past. For the previous harbour, I said that this place is not suitable for children. If you are coming with your family, the middle port, a more suitable place to swim. The beach consists of tiny pebbles and it is much easier to swim in the sea.
Orta Liman (Askeri Liman)
Yolumu orta limana çeviriyorum. Burası eskiden askeri liman olarak kullanılırmış. Daha önceki liman için çocuklara uygun değil demiştim. Burası ailenizle gelecekseniz denize girmek için daha uygun bir yer. Plajı küçük çakıllardan oluşuyor ve denize girmek çok daha kolay.

Main Street of the City
Numerous ruins can be found along the main street. The inscriptions are also quite interesting. An inscription on the main street revealed the wrestling match winner - his name was Kouglas.

Ancient Theater
It's 42 degrees hot, but it's definitely worth going up those stairs. Because there is a very beautiful ancient theater above.

The acoustics and ambiance of this place are great. The theater is a small building bearing the traces of the Hellenistic period. The Roman stage part was added much later.
Buranın akustiği ve ortamı harika. Tiyatro helenistik dönemin izlerini taşıyan küçük bir yapı. Roma dönemine ait sahne kısmı çok sonradan eklenmiş.
After descending the stairs, I thought another swimming break was necessary and headed towards the south port.

South Harbour
Let's come to the last harbour of Phaselis. Yacht tours are organized here. The sea is very shallow. Therefore, it is an ideal place for non-swimmers or children. At the same time, some parts have sand inlets. So Phaselis has both pebble and sandy beaches. Everyone can choose a beach according to their taste.

Phaselis is located in Antalya's Kemer district. It can be reached by buses from Antalya bus station or by private cars. It is about 60 km from Antalya.

The entrance fee to the ancient city is 55 lira. (approx 6.5 USD)

What to Wear?
I can say that shoes suitable for climbing are a must. If you are going to swim in areas with large stones, a water shoes may be necessary. Since you will be swimming in the sea, it is recommended to take your beach clothes, glasses and a hat in the warmer months.

Tırmanmaya elverişli ayakkabı olmazsa olmaz diyebilirim. Büyük taşların olduğu kısımlarda denize girecekseniz uygun bir deniz ayakkabısı gerekli olabilir. Denize gireceğiniz için plaj giysilerinizi yanınıza almanız ve sıcak aylarda gözlük ve şapka tavsiye edilir.
When to Visit?
I recommend choosing the evening hours to visit the ancient ruins. The ancient city is open until 20:00 in the evening. However, it would be better if you call and confirm before your visit. If you are going to reach with your own vehicle, I do not recommend choosing the weekend. Finding space for your car can be difficult.

My Visit to Kemer
On my way back from Phaselis, I stopped by the center of Kemer. It's been a while since I've been here, I missed this place. This is a cute little resort town. A modern clock tower welcomes us at the entrance. The clock is not working right now, but it can work if you arrive the correct time 2 times a day 🙂
Kemer Ziyaretim
Phaselis'ten dönüşte Kemer merkezine uğruyorum. Gelmeyeli bir süre olmuş, özlemişim. Burası küçük şirin bir tatil kasabası. Girişte bizi modern bir saat kulesi karşılıyor. Saat şu anda çalışmıyor ama gidiş saatinize göre günde 2 defa doğru saati tutturursanız çalışabilir 🙂
Then I pass through Deniz Street (whick means Sea street) and went down to the marina. Kemer street names are also amazing; Sea, Harbor... if there was Damla (Damla means a drop), it would be perfect.
Daha sonra Deniz caddesinden geçip yat limanına iniyorum. Kemer cadde isimleri de güzel; Deniz, Liman... bir de Damla olsa tam olacakmış.
There are souvenir shops on both sides of the road.

Everyone speaks Russian here. In other words, if you speak Turkish, there may be people who don't understand you, but everyone, including street vendors, understands Russian. It says hookah, lobster, raki, kebab, steak, beer, cocktails, seafood....
Burada herkes Rusça konuşuyor. Yani Türkçe konuşursanız anlamayan çıkabilir ama simitçi dahil herkes Rusça anlıyor. Nargile, ıstakoz, rakı, kebap, biftek, bira, kokteyller, deniz ürünleri.... demişler.
Moonlight beach is the popular beach of Kemer. A slightly pebbly beach. Next to it is the marina.
Ayışığı plajı Kemer'in popüler plajı. Hafif çakıllı bir plaj. Yan tarafında yat limanı yer alıyor.
There is a folkloric park next door. I think it's worth a visit while you're there.
Yan tarafta folklorik bir park var. Bence gelmişken uğramaya değer.
In this park, there is an open-air museum about the lives and traditions of the local people of Antalya.
Bu parkta Antalya'nın yerlilerinin yaşayışları, gelenek görenekleri ile ilgili bir açık hava müzesi yer alıyor.
Local souvenirs are sold in the gift shop of the park.
Parkın hediyelik eşya dükkanında yöresel hediyelikler satılıyor.
I stopped by the local woman making the pancakes. It might be a good idea to drink a cup of tea and have a pancake while you're in the nomadic park.
En son gözleme yapan teyzeye uğruyorum. Yörük parkına gelmişken bir çay içip gözleme yemeden ayrılmak olmazdı.

Reyhan şerbetini ve genellikle reyhanı çok severim. Annemin mutfağndan hiç eksik olmayan bir yeşillikti ve dolmalara salatalara her şeye eklerdi. O yüzden özlediğim bir tat. Ben de alayım dışarı çıktığımda şerbeti stevya ile yapabilirim diye düşünüyorum.
