Why Aren’t You Winning Photography Contests?

in Photography4 years ago (edited)

While we are waiting the outcome of the heavy sunburned steemit community recovery, we can safely asume that community will remain together, on this blockchain or at its decentralized fork… and then we can continue business as usual, and #photography contests as usual…

I have to say, one of the best features of Steemit as we knew it, was a number of photo contests that you can enter almost daily. As opposed to serious competitions, Steemit contests are free, quick and easy to enter. Participating in Steemit contests, you can check improvements in your photography and gather new friends. The token rewards are symbolic, but the emotional ones are by no means negligible. An occasional dose of dopamine can really make your day. But what if you are entering many contests but don’t win them?

An experienced photographer, educator and photo judge, Zack Arias, can tell you the main reasons why you are not winning photography contests. Five reasons begin at [8:35] mark, but I recommend to listen a full story of this man, because you may find yourself somewhere in it. Whenever you step over an obstacle, you are going level up — like in a computer games you have certainly play as a child. Only this is much more fun. Let’s hear what Zack Arias has to say:

Duration: 25:47

[08:35] 1. Putting your photo into wrong category
[09:47] 2. Your clients are not photography judges
[11:24] 3. Following trends
[12:16] 4. Shooting specifically for contests
[14:16] 5. Emotional connection to your photograph does not coming through to the viewer

[17:22] Bonus: Someone is a better negotiator

[22:00] Good side — Contests can be good motivators

As always in life, there are two advices that go together without question:

  1. Never give up
  2. Learn on your mistakes (and on someone else’s, which is even better)

Today almost anyone has a camera in his/hers phone, and here is the final advice which will help you to advance:

Do not forget to use it!
