Way Way Back Machine

Now that I have a scanner capable of doing film, I'm scanning all my old negatives from my youth. Back then everything was film, or if digital, it just plain sucked.

I was 12 years old when these were taken. I visited my cousins in Midland, TX and brought along a disposable camera as I was apt to do back then. There was no way my mother was going to let me borrow the 80's vintage Canon Sure Shot (though I hope she still has it when I go up for Christmas so I can rehome it).

It was the first time I really went anywhere on my own. I remember flying by myself with a tag around my neck and weirding out all the flight attendents. My aunt and cousins picked me up at the airport.

We went to the children's museum one day and a park at least three times where we pelted each other with acorns. I got hives, we thought I was allergic to Texas. Then wool blankets. Then we finally narrowed it down to the penicillin I was on for an ear infection the week before I flew down. To this day I can't go near most molds.

And of course there was a go-kart track. This may have been my first time on one. Unless my neighbor's go-kart was before that, it's all a blur.

The most memorable part of the trip was going to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.

Little did I know I would return to Carlsbad at the age of 18, and even live in New Mexico many years after that. The world was a much bigger place at 12 years old. I thought the whole town and underground grotto were super exotic. Although, it is a bit difficult to take photos in a dark cave.

I'm not entirely sure what kind of disposable camera this was. I have tucked the negatives away again for safekeeping but I don't recall any identifying marks. If I had to guess I'd say a Fujifilm of some random low ISO. Obviously it had a flash. These photos and maybe three more actually came out. I believe there were two photos of the inside of the film development kiosk. I'll have to scan those one day and we can play "guess the subject". Honestly I don't remember any other photos coming from this trip. There were many blank negatives, and no other prints in my stack.

Anywho, I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane. I know I did.

Those are some great memories, and some great stories to go with it! Fantastic that you've got the scanner, and hopefully your mom still has that old Canon!

I hope she does too, I'd love to shoot my own kids with the camera that shot me so many times.

Blast to the past, I like it
