I found myself explaining punctuation to my oldest as he wrote a letter to his favorite doll. “A comma is a pause, a period is an ending.”
Every now and then, a sentence, one that may even have been in a final copy, could use a revision. Sometimes sentences run on for years and years with no real value. There are times when I should have ended things. Period. And there are times when a sentence could use some elaboration. It is important to proofread life for errors, and edit accordingly.
Run-ons risk becoming convoluted. They may lose the subject in a series of fragments. But commas can mean continuation and the possibility of endless possibilities, separating what was, from what is to come. A comma can lead to deeper development and make room for hope in the future.
I recently reached my 40th year on this planet. As I approached it, I was compelled to pause in so many areas of my life, and then the whole world paused too. It feels as if we are living in the time of the comma. Life, clearly defined and familiar, came before, but now we are waiting. Waiting to see what will define this period in history. Many are trying on new clauses to see if they fit. Many have decided to declare an ending, or have been forced to. And still others question and exclaim, “What have we been doing here? This is a time for change!”
I wonder if any of us will write in ink again. That kind of certainty evaporated with the virus. No matter what lens you look through, coronavirus illuminated the need to write our lives in pencil, to keep an eraser handy, and to live in the grace of the comma. A comma is a pause, a period is an ending. Choose your punctuation mindfully.

Have you added any significant commas or periods recently? Are you making revisions or writing in ink? Tell me about your life in the time of the comma.

I am grateful to find a place with rich soil to grow a community. May we take root, and flourish together.

What a beautiful post, @bia.birch, and a wonderful sentiment. I know @pavanjr will appreciate this post too! A wonderful analogy. Makes me want to rush out and get a tattoo.
Thank you @riverflows! I have been pondering a tattoo, too! 🌱
I have not put a point in my life for a long time. I have been placing commas for years, which I review periodically to add content to the sentence; however I do not doubt that this 2020 will make us put some points in our stocks. I loved your post, it is lapidary and beautiful.
Note: I do write in pencil and ink, they are irreplaceable when making horoscopes.
Thank you @tarot911! 2020 needs a lot more periods in my opinion. Hopefully many feel the same. I find I have less understanding to share with those who continue to live in the gray areas of life. Many decisions these days are clear-cut and in need of some serious editing. Thank you for sharing! I look forward to reading more of your horoscopes 🌱
It is true, the review moments or periods are necessary, and 2020 required and requires even more ... because there is much to see.
Thanks for wanting to read my horoscope, from Sunday to Monday I will be posting. A big hug.
Very interesting analogy! I find it very strange how the world sits in a comma (the great pause), My life has mostly carried on how it was for I lived a rather isolated life back in the forest.
You sure got hit with a double wammy just turning 40 with that pause then covid!
I'm getting ready to enter a new stage in my live with my turning 65 and retiring. I think this is a very good time for that as I am happy to be leaving the work force so more of my life is lived peacefully in the forest.
Beautiful post - thanks for sharing!
Oh @porters, this is so true. Mystery and the mystical have been working hard in my life these days. There is something about midlife that attracts change. Period.
Congratulations on nearing retirement! What wonderful congruency with what is happening around you. I imagine myself living peacefully in the forest someday. Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your life 🌱
I love this analogy and the explanation for the punctuation at the start too. I have the urge to share in @homeedders too!

A poetic prose with grammatical reference. I loved it, I think it's one of the best things I've read so far. There can be a point, remember there are two kinds of points, although one is a longer pause.
Wonderful article.
Wow, what a compliment @pavanjr! Thank you🌱
Oh I love a good comma, and now I have a more philosophical reason for doing so. Lovely write-up.
Thank you @ginnyannette 🌱 Philosophy is totally my jam!
