in Natural Medicine4 years ago

My muscles are tired and my back aches, but my soul is happy and growing. For the last week I've been making daily advances on my forest shelter and little by little it's taking shape. Perhaps you will not be impressed by what is visually displayed on this post, but I know how much work it has taken me to make openings in the forest so I can get usable branches, as well as carrying them to the building spot.

If you want to check out this story from the beginning, here's a link to the first post where I go into more depth as to why I'm doing this and what I would like to achieve.

This first picture is just showing the pillars finally in place after burning the base to prevent them from rotting too quickly:

Now I was able to start placing the crossbars:

Ahora pude comenzar a colocar las barras transversales:

I put that little frame to mark the place where the rocket stove will come out of the shelter. The idea is for the smoke to go through a little bench that will be a nice warm place to sit in:

Ok, so it can't be all just hack, slash and hammer branches. I've been playing around a bit with plants as well. I placed some cuttings of a native plant called calafate (berveris microphylla) and to the right is a hard to spot cutting of a rosemary plant. So far they're looking good and let's hope they stay that way:

This is a cutting of the native tree nothofagus antartica, locally known as ñire. I'm really interested in recovering the native forest of this place as it has been cut down and replaced with willow and poplar, which are fine but don't give the same ecosystemic benefits as well as mushrooms that the natives produce here:

Some wild celery growing in the place. I've fed abundantly off these in the past and hope to see a lot coming soon:

Rosehips were introduced here but I like all the things you can make out of them so I'll allow some to grow:

Garlic does quite well in this area so I placed some sprouted bulbs in the ground:

Back to the building... I kept adding more branches:

De vuelta a la construcción ... Seguí agregando más ramas:

It might be hard to see but there are two rows of crossbars and the idea is to fill in the gaps with a mixture of clay, mud, ashes, horse dung and hay. I don't know how this combination will do but I have a lot of faith in it.

So that's my little update of the forest shelter. Hope you liked what's going on and thanks for reading!

This is absolutely awesome and SO impressive!! You must have had heaps of fun. We were building a basic brush wall today to protect our camp from anyone who might see it from the train that goes by the bottom of our place. It was heaps of fun - reminded me of building a cubbie when I was a kid, or a play shelter I suppose you'd call it. Jamie'll wild camp down there for fun - we're in lockdown, so thank god we have 5 acres to do things like that in, pretending we're actually camping in the wild haha.

5 acres is normally a blessing, these days it's paradise! It is tons of fun, especially going through the forest and gathering materials, I think it must connect with my primal essence and seems to grant me a different array of senses than life in the civilized world. Glad to know we're enjoying similar things and being able to enjoy the beauty of Life even now 🤗

Building from zero, with what you have, is an INCREDIBLE thing to do!! Earthing in the extreme! So much appreciating the SANITY of this in an insane, out of control, lost the plot world. Hugs from Thailand.

@artemislives thanks, it's nice of you to say so. Sometimes the programming of society makes me question my own sanity in doing such things, and though my conviction always pulls through, it's really good to receive words of support from another human being. Much love 💛

This is so cool! How are you attaching the horizontal branches to the vertical branches? It sounds like you're doing essentially wattle-and-daub construction except your horizontal branches are not long enough to weave like a basket, so I was curious. :D

Nah, I'm being lazy and using nails hahaha. Maybe in future constructions I'll try to go deeper into ancient techs, but for now I just want to have a place to sleep in as soon as possible :D

Hey, that's totally valid! I'm looking forward to seeing your project progress!

Oh! it's looking lovely! What sort of roof will you put on?
I'm glad you are doing some planting now working towards reclaiming the natural forest in your area for as the old saying goes "the best time to plant a tree is yesterday!"

That plant that you call wild celery - is it the lovage plant? It looks like it to me and I refer to it as my perennial celery and back up for when I don't have any of the regular celery, it is a very hardy plant!

It seems it might be indeed lovage plant... I knew it as wild celery but it matches all the descriptions! Glad to know you also enjoy this plant, I found it on a hungry day so you can imagine how bewildered I was about finding this delicious wild plant on spot.

As for the roof, I think it will be a layer of branches, another of broom plant, another of cob mixture, and finally some grass. Don't really like to think about that part as it gets me anxious on the amount of work it's going to mean!! But I'll try to stay as zen as possible 💚

Big hug @porters !

I love those grass roofs and the fact that it is all natural and will return to the earth at some point!
Our place has become a bit of a jungle lately with very wet years but it let's you see how nature will just take it all back at some point all except our metal roofs which are so long lasting and great for water capture but they will not break down but just be covered up. We have one metal roof on our well house that is getting covered with moss - creating so much character!

Here is a photo from last winter showing the moss on the roof covered by a foot of snow
