Why Sadness is Our Brain's Default Setting? And How To Change It!

Human brain is a funny little thing. It craves novelty. It wants something new to happen continuously. And it wants you to do something new continuously.

Happiness is directly proportional to growth. It means, the more you grow the more content you will feel with your life.

But growth is something that happens slowly. It happens with discipline, over time. With a mundane routine of repeating your actions daily.

On one hand, our brain is on a continuous lookout to do something new. And when it couldn't find new things, it becomes sad.
On other hand, we hate change. We want happiness in our life. We want
continuous growth.

According to the book, The Compound Effect, if you just add 0.3% improvement daily, you will be 110% better in an year.

It means, if you are disciplined enough, you can be 110% happier in just one year. Just imagine your happiness doubling every year.

Become an avalanche for your problems

An avalanche has three items. Snow, a sloped surface and a trigger. A weak layer, slides down the hill. It gets bigger and bigger. Adding more snow into it. Increasing its speed. And finally, causing an avalanche.

You just need to be like snow. When your life is going downhill, find a trigger. And become stronger with each movement. Add aggression, will power, and confidence in yourself.

And drop like an avalanche on your problems.

Change is always linear

Big abrupt changes rarely work. However, small changes are more powerful. A daily rountine builds up momentum and courage to break through your limits.

Effective changes doesn't happen overnight.
For example, if a person spends 8 hours a day learning to code, he won't learn much in a day. But if a person spends 10 years learning to code, coding just one hour a day, he can build things. He would master in more than one programming language. And he will get paid for his skills.

This is something I am trying to ingrain in my mind. Go slow, but go for a long term. Be consitent.

If we keep repeating small but dedicated habits daily, it will make us stronger every day.

Whereas, if we do something that hurt us, makes us weak, it will ruin our life. For example, smoking doesn't kill us in a day, but in a decade it might. Eating sweets and junk food doesn't kill us in a day, but in a decade, it might.

Everything good or bad, adds up in the long term. The more you repeat it, the stronger the results are. Your actions, always adds up. Good or bad, depends on you.

Each decision we make daily, will either set us up— on a positive life changing journey, or a journey that will ruin us. Choose wisely.

You will never change your life until you change something that you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine. — Darren Hardy from the book, The Compound Effect.

Turn your life goals into daily habits.

When you come up with a new life goal, immediately turn it into a daily habit.

Like, I decided to learn coding. So, instead of one big goal, I decided to pursue a small goal of coding for 30 mins daily. And wait for compound effect to kick in. Maybe I will see the effect in 3 months, or an year.

But doing something for 30 mins a day, doesn't bother me much. Changing my daily routine and coding for 3-4 hours a day, could have unmotivated me to continue.

So, I started small. And within a week of starting, I am spending 90 mins a day to learn coding.

The idea is to make a routine and build momentum. Create a daily rountine that I can stick with, so that I become addicted to that routine.

Like, after writing for two months daily, I feel like I can't stop writing for even one day. I won't sleep without writing(at least not peacefully).

The hardest part is to get started

The hardest part is to start. To build up the initial routine.

You don't need to do everything in a day, or in a week, or even in a month.

You need to start slow, let the momentum build. Continue the process. And when the momentum is strong enough, it will break all the barriers in your life.

It doesn't matter how much you try to break it in one day, you can't achieve anything big in a day.

Once you reach a limit, smash through it with the help of momentum you have built.

If you work hard consistently, eventually, your luck will turn up. And it will be a life changing opportunity for you. Just remember to take it.

How 19.png

Make your own luck. Work hard, be consistent. Opportunities will come disguised as problems. So, whenever you face a problem, think of it as an opportunity to grow and build something. Work on yourself. And come out stronger.

It's true that problems will never stop. But it's also true that you will become stronger after each problem you solve. And who doesn't want to be stronger with time?

It's not the goal that is important itself, it's the daily commitment to do the work that needs to be done. It's the confidence you build daily. It's the the satisfaction of achievement, when you know that you have worked daily for something, that's important.

Why power is always greater than will power.

If you have will power, that's great. But if you know why you are doing something, nothing can stop you from achieving your goals. Once you know why, you will definitely figure out how.

If you want to know why you want to do something, if you want know why your goals are important for you, define them in as much detail as possible. And somehow, you will know your why.

Your work, your choices, your routine will only be meaningful if you know why you are doing it.

Simple yet powerful four point rule:

  • Don't try to fix your life in a day. Success is found in making smart choices over time.
  • It's okay to take small steps to move in the direction you want to.
  • You can't live a positive life surrounded by negative people.
  • It's never too late to start.
