Una de las características más singulares de los seres humanos es la necesidad de creer en algo, lo cual considero proviene de la incomprensión de gran parte del mundo y del universo, así como también del reconocimiento de la eternidad del alma y de la existencia de una inteligencia superior que puede establecer orden dentro del caos cósmico y terrenal. Esta reflexión me lleva a analizar a algunas de las manifestaciones de carácter espiritual presente en nuestros pueblos, dentro de las cuales está la creencia en las ánimas.
One of the most unique characteristics of human beings is the need to believe in something, which I consider comes from the misunderstanding of much of the world and the universe, as well as the recognition of the eternity of the soul and the existence of a superior intelligence that can establish order within the cosmic and earthly chaos. This reflection leads me to analyze some of the manifestations of a spiritual nature present in our peoples, among which is the belief in souls.
En los países latinoamericanos es muy común la creencia en las ánimas, que son los espíritus de los fallecidos. Esta creencia tiene en parte un origen sincrético, es decir, es producto del mestizaje que ha dado origen a la cultura de este continente. De este modo es posible ver, como desde México hasta Argentina, en cada pueblo y ciudad hay un altar, una capilla o un lugar en donde se le rinde culto a algún difunto (hombre o mujer) que concede favores de distinta naturaleza, y cuya vida o muerte han tenido un rasgo peculiar.
In Latin American countries, belief in souls, which are the spirits of the deceased, is very common. This belief has in part a syncretic origin, that is, it is a product of the miscegenation that has given rise to the culture of this continent. In this way it is possible to see, as from Mexico to Argentina, in each town and city there is an altar, a chapel or a place where a deceased person (man or woman) is worshiped who grants favors of different nature, and whose Life or death have had a peculiar feature.
A lo largo y ancho de Venezuela existe un marcado culto a las ánimas, y hoy quiero hablarles de una en particular: El Ánima del Potrero, un joven cuyo nombre en vida fue Lienar Morales. Para mí es muy importante, ya que tengo fe en él pues me ha ayudado en algunas ocasiones; además de que fue primo de mi madre, y por tanto mi primo segundo, y aunque no lo conocí, siempre oí relatos sobre su vida y el trabajo que hace después de muerto.
Throughout Venezuela there is a marked cult of souls, and today I want to tell you about one in particular: The Spirit of “El Potrero”, a young man whose life name was Lienar Morales. For me it is very important, since I have faith in him because he has helped me on some occasions; In addition to being my mother's cousin, and therefore my second cousin, and although I did not know him, I always heard stories about his life and the work he does after death.
Lienar Morales: El Ánima del Potrero // Lienar Morales: The Spirit of “El Potrero”
Lienar Morales fue un hombre que nació y vivió en Valle de la Pascua, estado Guárico, Venezuela a mediados del pasado siglo XX. Fue criado por su tía Ligia Morales (mi abuela) y por su abuela materna Carmen Morales. Era guapo, de tez muy blanca y siempre estaba sonrosado, tenía unos hermosos ojos de color marrón claro, abundante cabello castaño y frente despejada; era de baja estatura por lo que generalmente usaba botas de tacón cubano que le hacían ver un poco más alto. Desde joven se caracterizó por tener un carácter jovial, agradable, además de ser muy solidario, lo cual le generó muchos amigos, siendo apreciado por las personas en general. Siempre le atrajeron las máquinas, lo que le llevó a ser un excelente mecánico. Adicionalmente hacía cualquier trabajo honesto que le permitiese ganar el sustento diario (chofer, albañil, jornalero). Esto era especialmente importante debido a la difícil situación económica de su familia, pues él a corta edad ya colaboraba con su mantenimiento.
Lienar Morales was a man who was born and lived in Valle de la Pascua, Guarico state, Venezuela in the mid-20th century. He was raised by his aunt Ligia Morales (my grandmother) and by his maternal grandmother Carmen Morales. He was handsome, with a very white complexion and was always rosy. He had beautiful light brown eyes, abundant brown hair and a clear forehead; he was short so he generally wore cuban heeled boots that made him look a little taller. From a young age he was characterized by having a jovial, pleasant character, as well as being very supportive, which generated many friends, being appreciated by people in general. He was always attracted to machines, which made him an excellent mechanic. Additionally, he did any honest job that would allow him to earn a daily living (driver, bricklayer and laborer). This was especially important due to the difficult financial situation of his family, since at a young age he already collaborated with their maintenance.

Así transcurría su vida de forma tranquila y normal, entre el trabajo, su familia y sus muchos amigos; pero lamentablemente le llegó una mala hora, el día martes 22 de febrero del año 1956. Él venía como pasajero en la parte de atrás de un camión que transportaba sacos de cemento, que transitaba por la vía Tucupido - Valle de la Pascua, cuando en la entrada al caserío conocido como El Potrero, el vehículo se volcó ocasionando la muerte del joven, quien venía dormido y falleció por fractura de cráneo. Tenía apenas 22 años de edad, en el mes de junio de ese año hubiese cumplido 23.
Thus his life passed in a calm and normal way, between work, his family and his many friends; but unfortunately a bad hour arrived on Tuesday, February 22, 1956. He came as a passenger in the back of a truck carrying bags of cement, which was traveling on the Tucupido - Valle de la Pascua road, when in the entrance to the hamlet known as El Potrero, the vehicle overturned causing the death of the young man, who had been asleep and died of a skull fracture. He was barely 22 years old, in the month of June of that year he would have turned 23.
Este suceso conmocionó a la pequeña población de Valle de la Pascua, debido a lo estimado que era Lienar Morales, lo que se manifestó en un velorio y entierro muy concurridos.
This event shocked the small population of Valle de la Pascua, due to the esteem that Lienar Morales was, which manifested itself in a very popular wake and funeral.

Fue aproximadamente al año de su fallecimiento, que se inició la creencia de las personas en este espíritu; porque fue en ese momento cuando comenzó cumplir con las peticiones que le hacían. El primer favor que concedió consistió en que aparecieran unas reses extraviadas y se lo otorgó al señor José Del Corral, quien posteriormente en agradecimiento, construyó en el sitio del accidente la primera capilla en su honor. Al conocerse que cumplía rápidamente lo que se le pedía, la creencia en él aumentó, siendo llamado el Ánima del Potrero. Las personas que le tienen fe manifiestan que hace favores de distinto tipo, como son el resguardo y sanación de animales, la protección de predios, viviendas, vehículos, entre otros. Y yo puedo dar fe de que sí cumple, pues a mí me ha ayudado en múltiples oportunidades. Así pues, que hoy quise compartir con ustedes este pedacito de nuestra tradición religiosa y recuerden: La memoria y cultura de los pueblos perduran en su práctica, conservación y difusión; así pues que no caigamos en el olvido. Un gran abrazo.
It was approximately one year after his death that people's belief in this spirit began; because it was at that moment when he began to fulfill the requests that were made to him. The first favor he granted consisted of the appearance of lost cattle and he granted it to Mr. José Del Corral, who later, in gratitude, built the first chapel in his honor on the site of the accident. When it was known that he quickly fulfilled what was asked of him, the belief in him increased, being called the spirit of El Potrero. People who have faith in him show that he does favors of different kinds, such as the protection and healing of animals, the protection of properties, homes, vehicles, among others. And I can attest that it does, because it has helped me on multiple occasions. So, today I wanted to share with you this little piece of our religious tradition and remember: The memory and culture of peoples endure in their practice, conservation and dissemination; so let us not be forgotten. Lo cierto es que en mi caso fue tan real que se materializó y pudo ser visto por un potencial agresor, disuadiéndolo de hacerme daño. Gracias por tu comentario. Sin importar el credo o religión de las personas, hay que tener en cuenta que estas creencias forman parte de la identidad cultural de nuestros pueblos; y siempre es necesario conocer nuestras raíces para poder proyectarnos mejor hacia el futuro.
Muy interesante, mi mamá le pide a las aminas en algunas ocasiones, se que están allí presentes de alguna manera, no tengo esa agudeza de poder verlas pero si se por relatos de familiares, que han visto y las ven a cualquier hora del día, nuestro país tiene centenares de creencias y muchas son ciertas, así como tu primo, en mi familia y en la de mi esposa hay igual animas de familiares que protegen a sus seres más cercanos o importantes cuando estaban físicamente entre nosotros.
