TacoCat's TrEats #149: Enjoying Oishii Conveyor Belt Sushi! 🍣

image.png

Hey Hive!

Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again!

So the other day I was craving one of my favourite dishes that I haven't had in a long time - soft shell crab sushi! Also known as spider roll, it contains a deep fried battered soft-shell crab and other ingredients such as cucumber, avocado, daikon sprouts or lettuce, and spicy mayonnaise, rolled inside nori and sushi rice. The name spider roll is derived from the way the crab legs look when it sticks out of the maki as it resembles a spider.

My parents used to buy this for me when I was younger from a sushi takeout place which has since closed down but I always remember this being one of my favourite sushi. However it is quite uncommon is typical Japanese restaurants (especially those I found in Japan) since raw seafood is more prevalent there. I have a hunch that this sushi originated outside of Japan so it might not be as legitimate but it is still really yummy.

Anyway, we decided to try this place called Sushiro since they had this particular type of sushi!

image.png

We've seen this restaurant in quite a few malls but never tried it before as it was always very crowded and unluckily for us it was just as crowded on a weekday night. There were quite a few people waiting on the benches outside this outlet. We didn't know it was a conveyor belt sushi place until we arrived but it's been a long time since we had conveyor belt sushi so we decided to try it anyway.

image.png

There is a ticket booth outside the restaurant where you can get a ticket number to queue up. So we took a ticket and it told us the waiting time was about 20 minutes. They also have an app which tells you the queue number so we went to walk around the mall for a bit while waiting.

image.png

After about 25 minutes or so, our number was called and we could finally enter the restaurant! The whole restaurant is basically made of booths with conveyor belts on one side.

image.png

There were three different aisles of booths but the last aisle also had some smaller counter seats for solo diners.

image.png

There was also a drinks counter so we assumed there were free-flow drinks but you had to order a cup from them to get access of course.

image.png

There was also a water station and different sauces that I assume was free to take.

image.png

We were shown to our table where we could see both a digital and physical menu and had access to the conveyor belt.

image.png

This was the digital menu where you could order specific items from the menu, such as the more premium sushi or the cooked items.

image.png

This was the full menu they had including all the types of sushi, noodles, a la carte and even dessert items!

image.png

Other than ordering from the digital menu, if you just couldn't wait to try the sushi you could actually just take plates off of the conveyor belt. They even had placards up separating the different types of sushi so you could tell what you were taking.

image.png

There were actually two levels of conveyor belts; one was the common belt with the sushi going around while the upper belt was for each table specifically that would send the sushi you ordered with the digital tablet straight to the table!

image.png

It was actually really convenient and that way you wouldn't be wondering whether the sushi would be fresh like those on the common belt since it came straight from the kitchen.

The first couple of plates we had was a mixture of sushi that we ordered including some salmon, salmon belly, california roll and the more expensive premium Roast Beef sushi, which I thought was quite interesting since I'd never tried beef sushi before. The plates are colour coded to denote the different prices.

image.png

This was the roast beef sushi, which was not bad but still kinda weird to have beef on sushi. It tasted alright, but I probably wouldn't order this again, since the beef being warm and sushi rice being cold threw me off a bit.

image.png

It's been a while since I had a california roll; another romanised dish but still alright nonetheless.

image.png

We also tried some other cooked sushi like shrimp tempura sushi and broiled mackerel. The tempura was pretty good, but I wasn't a fan of the mackerel. It was nicely fried but its the actual taste of mackerel that I don't really like.

image.png

I also tried the basic tuna that they had. Tuna is huge when its comes to sushi (with many different grades of tuna) but personally I've never been a big fan of tuna as its too strong for me. This one was alright and wasn't too fishy but I still prefer salmon more.

image.png

And of course, the pièce de résistance - the soft shell crab sushi! This one was actually hand delivered to us by the waiter and was quite impressive! There was a regular one topped with mayonnaise and fish roe and another one topped with chili crab sauce.

image.png

Chili crab is not a typical topping of sushi and can probably only be found in Singapore but it was pretty good! The soft shell crab was nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The sauces complemented them really well too.

image.png

Sean is not a big fan of raw seafood so he ordered a bowl of udon as well, which was pretty average but filled him up so that was good. One bowl is less than 5 bucks so it was good enough.

image.png

I had been craving sushi for a while so this meal really hit the spot. Although it couldn't compare to sushi in Japan I think this was a good place to go to here in Singapore.

image.png

We stacked our sushi plates and called the waiter to come and tally them up and they handed us a payment card so we could go do self-payment at the kiosk!

image.png

So we took our payment card to one of the kiosks and man, you wouldn't think of it when you're grabbing and ordering plates since the cheapest ones cost $2.90 but they really add up! It was a really good meal though so no regrets, even though I know now not to order some items.

image.png

The sushi mascot is a cat hugging a piece of fish and they even had a merchandise counter that looked so cute! The cat is all white so he looks like sushi too!

image.png

That's all for this post! If you're ever craving conveyor belt sushi I'd recommend Sushiro, especially with friends and family. It's a nice place to have a sit-down meal with people while having sushi express delivered to you!
