TacoCat's TrEats #63: The Perfect Fusion of Affordable and Abundant! 🍲

Hey Hive!

It's time to share yet another one of our recent food haunts we found during quarantine! Even though it's been a while since Singapore came out of Phase 1 of the lockdown (i.e. no dining in, most shops closed except essential services), we've still been limiting our time spent eating out, or just being out in general, to be safe.

So if we decide not to cook, we'd typically just takeaway food or order from a food delivery service. And one of our favourite places to takeaway from is a place called Isle Eating House!

Sean found this place early on during the lockdown while looking for something to takeaway for lunch one day. And he said it was really good! Not only was the food tasty, but it was also cheap and plentiful with the portions! Since I was hankering for some fried rice, we decided to come back here for dinner the other day!

Located within a very old shopping centre called ParkLane (which is situated within an equally old building called Peace Centre), Isle Eating House is probably one of the first places you'll see when you enter ParkLane (other than the McDonalds in the basement).

It's a short walk away from a couple MRT stations like Bencoolen and Dhoby Ghaut, but if you don't work, study or live nearby I can understand not knowing about this place. It is kinda out of the way, but if you're exploring the city, there are plenty of options for cheap food around like here.

Anyway, the interior of the mall itself is pretty interesting. It definitely feels like you've gone back in time every time you step foot inside ParkLane. Especially with retro-style elevators like these:

And that sitting area is actually Isle Eating House itself! There wasn't a place I could get a good angle since the those retro elevators were blocking it, but this is basically the whole restaurant:

There are quite a few seats available, but since we weren't dining in it didn't really matter.

Here's the menu!
They had Western dishes:

And drinks:

Their menu is actually pretty comprehensive; I wasn't expecting them to have so many different dishes, and from different cuisines as well!

Sean said that their Western dishes were pretty good, and well worth the price (which is actually pretty cheap for Western food!) because they were really generous with the portions. So I decided to order the Egg Fried Rice with Chicken Cutlet!

We actually had choices of 2 sides (which I forgot to take a picture of unfortunately) but they were pretty standard like rice, mashed potato, baked beans, etc. I didn't have much of a preference but since I already had carbs in the form of egg fried rice (which itself was a side), so Sean ordered scrambled egg for me.

And this was my meal!

And dang was it impressive. The chicken cutlet was huge! And with 1 bowl of the fried rice and scrambled eggs, they were indeed really generous.

I think Sean ordered the Sliced Fish Hor Fun, which I forgot to take a picture of since we were so hungry! It smelled so good; I couldn't wait to dig in! 🤤

And it was delicious! The rice and scrambled eggs were fluffy, and the chicken cutlet was crispy and juicy! 😋 The rice might've been a little plain so I added some dried sambal chili to give it some spice, and it was perfect.

The chicken was really good though! We did have to wait a little bit for my chicken cutlet to be fried but man it was worth it! It was still piping hot and crispy by the time we got home!

I don't think this Isle Eating House is a chain or anything but I'm not entirely sure. I think I've heard of Isle Eating House in other locations but I'm not sure if it's the same menu. This restaurant in particular looked like it was a family-run business, and seems like they've been here for a long time so good for them!

Isle Eating House has definitely become one of my go-to places for cheap Western food, and I'm gonna miss it when we move out of this region. But until then I'll definitely be eating here again!
