Hey Hive!

Now that it's been quite a while since Singapore has has been out of lockdown, or what our government has termed "circuit breaker", restaurants have been operating pretty much as usual aside from implementing safe distancing measures. We've also been eating out more and trying new places!

And one of these new places is this stall called Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak!

We were out on a grocery run at the nearby mall (called Causeway Point) and this was a stall we had always wanted to try, so we figured why not. We had passed by this stall previously but the queue was always quite long so we were lucky there wasn't a line this time!

For those who are unfamiliar, Nasi Lemak is a dish originating in Malay cuisine that consists of fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. It is often served with fried anchovies, peanuts, boiled egg, cucumber, sambal and a fried chicken wing. It is commonly found in Southeast Asia, and is considered the national dish of Malaysia. (Cr: Wikipedia)

Nasi lemak is probably one of my favourite rice dishes, along with chicken rice! And it had been quite a while since I've had nasi lemak so I was excited to eat it again, especially since Sean told me this stall is quite famous.

The menu is actually really simple, with only 2 options - a chicken set or a fish set. I guess you'll get a fish patty instead of a chicken wing in that case, but both of us love fried chicken so we got a chicken set each.

So aside from the usual side dishes and a piece of chicken/fish that is included in the set, you can also choose to add extra side dishes like an additional egg, or chicken nuggets, fish patties, etc.

This stall is not really a restaurant and there are no seating areas here so all orders are to-go, and the stall owner wraps up the nasi lemak in the classic brown paper packaging, in the shape of a cone!

We ordered an extra vegedil/begedil (which is a potato croquette of Indian/Malay origin) to share as well. In hindsight we probably should've just ordered one each since it's quite small and it's only 50cents but oh well.

The friendly owner packed up our nasi lemaks nicely and man, those packs were actually pretty heavy! I could really feel the weight of the rice while I was carrying them, which is good because we were hungry, and also it was true value for money! The rice smelled so good, I couldn't wait to go back and eat it!

So this was what the nasi lemak looked like when we first opened the pack! Sorry it's not very photogenic, but she packed it real tight to make sure the heat was well-contained, and it was actually pretty densely packed!

I guess I could've arranged it to look nicer, but man I was so hungry and it smelled so good! I could barely resist the temptation just to get these photos rather than ravage the entire pack right then and there. 😆

The presentation might not be the best (because it's packed) but man, was it delicious! The rice was nice and fragrant with a subtle coconut taste and the chicken was juicy and crispy. The sides were pretty normal, but nothing to complain about so that's good. The vegedil was also really nice; soft and moist.

But one of the most important thing about nasi lemak is definitely the sambal chili; it practically makes or breaks the nasi lemak because the other ingredients (maybe aside from the rice) are pretty easy to replicate. And this stall's sambal chili is so good! It was a little spicy at times, but it had the perfect blend of sweet and spicy, and complemented the rice perfectly!

Overall, a 10/10 for sure! Now every time we go to Causeway Point to shop for groceries we make it a point to buy this back for dinner. It's affordable, delicious and is good every time; you just can't go wrong!

So if you're ever in the mood for nasi lemak and looking for a quick bite, try Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak! I think they have 2 outlets in the west, 1 in the north and 1 in the south of Singapore, so give it a go if you can!

Thanks so much for reading!
