Food Sharing #231 - Okami @ Pennant Hills Australia

Hi Everyone,

It’s hard to come by a Japanese buffet on the cheap side but one of my friends just told us that a new one have been opened near their area. At $34.80 per adult and half price for kids, that is a pretty good price for a buffet so we decided to go together and give it a go. To be honest, we weren’t expecting much with that price but we do want to try it and see what it is all about. We had a look at the menu online and it was the more simple generic Japanese dishes you get and not much of the high end stuff but we didn’t mind, we just want to try it. Booking is essential and was given two times to choose from as the restaurant offers two sessions a night. With the kids with us, we chose the 5.30pm option. Each seating is for 120 minutes so we need to be out by 7.30.

Let’s check out the menu to see what we can order. All food are to be ordered from the table and not like the traditional style where you go out and get whatever you want due to COVID. We literally ordered most things from the menu to try. We don’t need to tell the staff how many servings we want, they will just provide us with the right amount according to the amount of people at the table. The only things that needed a quantity are like udon noodles, ice cream, steamed egg etc.

Below are some of the food we have ordered. Most of the food are acceptable if you don’t have high standards. The tempura was a disappointment as we feel like the batter was old or more like a re-fry so it was terrible. Funny enough the other fried food was pretty acceptable so not sure what went wrong with the tempura. The other thing disappointing was the beef and squid both was very tough. From these few dishes and experience working at a restaurant before, I suspect some dishes were pre-made or partially made so when customers order the dish, they would just heat it up quickly which is why some dishes would come out tough or overcooked. Other than those dishes, everything else as pretty acceptable. My kids each had two bowls of udon and loads of chicken skewers as it was done pretty well.

Choices for dessert was not very exciting but enough. We all agreed that with the price, it wasn’t too bad. The restaurant was extremely busy but we were spaced out pretty well. We feel there wasn’t enough staff working on the floor but food did come very quickly when its as ordered. Even though some dishes were not up to expectation, i would still recommend this restaurant due to the price was not too expensive and you do get a nice variety of food with most of them made well. The other thing to note there is free parking at the centre where the restaurant is located so you don’t need to worry about the car and enjoy your time.
