Not sure if you ever heard of this Northeastern Thai / Northern Thai dish called 'Larb' before? It's one of those super-duper delicious dishes (well, all Thai dishes are just so good, what can I say?) but this one is not as popular among foreigners like PadThai, Tom Yum, Green curries, papaya salad, etc.
Larb is a type of Lao meat salad that is regarded as the unofficial national dish of Laos. It is also eaten in the Isan region, an area of Thailand where the majority of the population is of the Lao ethnicity, and among the Hmong people, an ethnic minority group in Laos and Thailand. More info.
We, Thai people usually eat this dish along with Papaya salad, hot and sour soup, grilled meat, and instead of just the regular rice, Larb goes best with sticky rice!
How to make Larb
Larb is probably one of the easiest Thai dishes to make if you have the right ingredients.
- Ground pork is the most common but I personally prefer beef
- Roasted rice is what gives the dish such a unique flavor and smell
- Ground chili pepper
- Red Onions
- Green onions
- Fish sauce
- Lime juice
- Sugar (If you're most likely having diabetes like myself. If not, skip it.)
Those are pretty much all the ingredients you need to make such yummy dish in no time but unfortunately, I love shortcuts so we purchased seasoning ready to dump into the pan :) and we also miss some ingredients that honestly, replaceable.
