When I started this blog three years ago I also started a series called Magic Places, in which I would introduce beautiful locations I have visited. Today I want to continue this series with a small article about the Erg Chigaga.
If you follow my articles here you might already know this place. I visited it twice already and for each trip into this part of the Sahara, I recorded a behind the scenes video, which I shared here on Hive.
The Erg Chigaga lies in the southern part of Morocco. It's a bit remote and can be reached by 4x4, by foot or on the back of a camel. The remoteness is what makes this place so special. Despite many Berber camps that are spread throughout the dunes, which provide very comfortable accommodation, it's still possible to find solitude because of the vastness of the place.
I always stay in Camp Al Koutban , which is surrounded by beautiful dunes. I just love to get up early in the morning and climb one of the dunes near camp to watch the sunrise. There's just nothing like the peaceful silence you can experience in the desert in the morning.
And then there are the colors around sunrise and sunset. Over a period of an hour the sea of sand turns into a sea of gold and later for a brief moment glows in shades of red.
If you ever have the chance to visit Morocco, make sure to also visit the desert for a few days. It's an unforgettable experience and you will want to return straight away. I will for sure once traveling is possible again.
